World Records, Broken Noses, and Bicycles: A Chat With Zach Hutelin

Categories: Sports?

For bicycle geeks, a well-executed manual is a thing of beauty. While a typical wheelie involves yanking up the front wheel and pedaling like a madman, a manual demands a thrust of the hips and flick of the wrists to get the bike coasting -- no pedaling once the front wheel lifts off.

Those with enough talent make it look like an effortless everyday stunt, but anyone who has tried to master the skill knows it's an extraordinarily difficult exercise in balance.

Plantation teenager Zach Hutelin recently set the world record for longest manual, so we decided to catch up with him to ask about what life as a world record holder in tenth grade is like.

George Zimmerman Has More Support Than the Miami Marlins, New Florida Poll Finds

Go Marlins!
Public Policy Polling decided to pick Florida's collective brain last week, and results released yesterday shed light on some very interesting trends. The most interesting: 26 percent of Floridians polled said George Zimmerman is innocent of the second-degree murder charges filed in the February killing of Trayvon Martin, but only 15 percent of people could admit to being fans of the Miami Marlins.

There also seems to be a political rift between fans of the Tampa Bay Rays and the Marlins: Among Floridians who voted for John McCain in 2008, 43 percent more of them support the Rays than the Marlins. If this is, like, really interesting to you, you'll probably get a kick out of a few of the other tidbits after the jump.

Jose Canseco Posts Exceptionally Insane Tweets, Also Somehow Got Sponsors

Categories: Sports?

Canseco tweeted this picture of himself last year.
It's not a secret that Jose Canseco, South Florida's most infamous meathead slugger turned reality-show washout, has a wildly popular Twitter account -- well over 400,000 followers eagerly awaiting the next 140 characters of weird, deluded complaining about how terrible and unjust it is that someone who writes two books tattling on his steroid-using friends is no longer liked by his steroid-using friends.

I wrote an article about the former MLB all-star last year (full disclosure: He called me a piece of shit) and thought I'd check in on his Twitter account, which is always full of pleas for big-league tryouts, stuff about being "blackballed," his girlfriend's cell phone number, stuff like that. What's there now, though, is way more bizarre.

Miami Marlins Home Run Sculpture Video Leaks; Everyone Pukes

This is not a dream.
Less than two weeks after we found out the Miami Marlins were testing their new aquarium backstop/aquatic nightmare tank by throwing baseballs at it, a video of their long-mocked home-run sculpture in action has made its way to YouTube -- and it looks even worse than the pictures.

The thing looks like what happens when you ask a coked-up pastry chef to make you a slot machine cake. We can only hope it's not a hitter's park.

Fish May Not Like Being in the Miami Marlins Stadium's Aquarium Backstop

marlins-aquarium.JPG
via YouTube (Manny Navarro)
The new Miami Marlins stadium has a backstop that could only have originated in South Florida -- rather than have a normal-people brick wall or those nice green pads, the stadium will have 40 feet of aquariums separating the area behind home plate from the first row of fans.

Though Marlins President David Samson says the aquarium setup "screams Miami," the setup was manufactured by Fort Lauderdale-based Living Color Aquariums, in a process that company president Mat Roy said started two years ago. I called to ask how one would go about putting an aquarium in a baseball stadium without the folks in the expensive seats getting their laps filled with dead fish.

NFL Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk's Broward Condo Is in Foreclosure (We Got the Documents)

Dodging defensive ends, debts.
(EDIT, 2:20 p.m.: Jose Lambiet is reporting Faulk doesn't even own the condo anymore because the condo association bought it from him after a deal in 2010.)

PNC Bank filed a foreclosure complaint late last month on the Pompano Beach condo of Marshall Faulk, the former St. Louis Rams running back who sits at number ten all-time for NFL rushing yards.

Several blogs have picked up the story from TMZ; the details were sitting in the Broward Courthouse -- here they are.

Though Faulk, currently a television football analyst, was charged only interest on the loan until 2014 with payments starting at $503 per month, the bank says he hasn't made a payment since September of last year,...

Super Bowl Live Blog From Louis the Clueless Orphan Sports Fan

Categories: Sports?

A photo from Louis' childhood.
Louis did not have an average childhood. An orphan, he was taken in by kindly nuns, but now he's 30 years old and the nuns finally convinced him to move out. He was raised to be a kind and forgiving gentleman, but his experience in the orphanage had one blind spot -- American football.

He enjoys other sports -- jai alai in particular -- so he really wants to get into this one too. We felt Louis' innocent take on the game would be refreshing, so we asked if we could transcribe his thoughts on the game for you. He agreed, partly because he thinks it will be interesting but mostly because we told him we'd be friends with him if he did.

So here is Louis' first encounter with football, in real time.

Credo Mobile Creates Super PAC, Immediately Targets Allen West

allen-west-improbable-hands.jpg
"What IS it with people noticing I'm crazy?"
A cell phone company is jumping into the fight for District 22.

Credo Mobile was founded in the '80s as a long-distance phone service that sent 1 percent of customer charges to "further the causes of human rights, women's rights, peace, environmentalism and an entire progressive agenda." The founders eventually got into the cell phone biz, and now they've started a super PAC and plan to "take down the Tea Party Ten," a group of congressmen they call "racist, sexist, anti-science, hypocritical and downright crazy." They named their first six targets today, and our very own Allen West is right there on the list.

Your move, AT&T.

The PAC's list has West at number six, under the headline "Beyond Crazy." It

Florida Panthers May Owe $30.8 Million if Team Hasn't Sheltered Homeless Since '96

Categories: Sports?
Florida_Panthers_logo.jpg
Here's an audit Florida's professional sports franchises may not have expected -- records of housing the homeless at their facilities over the years.

The chances of that audit happening depend on a bill that's working its way through the Legislature, and if the Florida Panthers haven't been housing the homeless, the team's on the hook for more than $30.8 million in tax breaks it's gotten since 1996.

A recently released legislative analysis of State Sen. Mike Bennett's Senate Bill 816 notes that a law from the '80s requires sports franchises in Florida to house the homeless in its facility on off-nights, and in exchange, the teams get $166,667 from the state every month.

Amar'e Stoudemire Now Part of What's Likely the Most Athletic Neighborhood in Broward

Amar'e Stoudemire
New York Knicks forward Amar'e Stoudemire bought a new house in Southwest Ranches, which made headlines a few weeks ago largely due to the fact that his new pad is enormous and expensive -- $3.7 million for 14,555 square feet.

Is it obnoxiously large with a huge swimming pool, movie theater, seven bathrooms, two wet bars, and a nine car garage? Sure it is, and it's not even his full-time home.

The important thing here is that Stoudemire's purchase now lands him in what's probably the most athletic neighborhood in Broward.
