Sheriff Al Lamberti's Democratic challenger Scott Israel looked like a long-shot candidate, but he's been pulling out all the stops recently, flinging whatever poo will stick to Lamberti, and the Sheriff isn't ducking fast enough.

In fact, the sheriff has skipped out on two debates with Israel, one on Channel 10 and the other in front of the NAACP.

The latest gift to Israel: the sheriff's close associate in the department, pictured walking next to him in a campaign commercial, has been charged with falsifying records after a plea deal.

Scott Israel (Campaigning?) Calls for Investigation of Decade-Old BSO Hogtieing Death

Israel
The motto of the Broward Sheriff's Office could be "if it's uncomfortable, don't talk about it." The death of an inmate by suicide, with plenty of warning signs, in a Broward jail? Silence. The federal investigation into Lt. David Benjamin, who ferried Ponzi schemer Scott Rothstein to his getaway jet? Silence.

The South Florida Times' coverage of an an unsettling hogtieing death in 2001, long before Lamberti took office? Silence.

Enter Democratic sheriff candidate Scott Israel, who is using the last weeks of the campaign to associate the current sheriff with unsavory stuff. With 26 days until the election, Israel took to a podium in front of the African-American Research Library on Friday to call for an investigation into the 11-year-old hogtieing case.

If you can tell a lot about a man from where he gets his money, then Sheriff Al Lamberti is a friend of the working man: recently, he's been both shootin' and bowlin' to collect contributions for his reelection campaign.

He also handed out BMW-friendly bumper stickers to a bunch of bluehairs at a Greek taverna. Covering all the bases, we guess. In fact, the only demographic group he doesn't seem to be actively courting is New Times readers.

But Scott Israel, who breezed through the primary to challenge Lamberti for a second time, is implying that Lamberti's department cajoles its own deputies to shell out for the boss man.
