Rick Scott's Christmas Card, Paid for by Florida GOP

rick scott christmas card - crop-resize.jpg

It's always nice when a governor you have repeatedly ridiculed finds time in his busy schedule to send you a holiday card. Having neglected my mailbox for the past several weeks, I'm not sure when this gem arrived. But it sure is breathtaking. And the inside is even better...

Herman Cain Welcome Sign: "Got Grope?"

A warm South Florida welcome to the pizza king.
Herman Cain is stumping in South Florida today, attempting to revive his sputtering presidential campaign with a $999-a-head fundraiser at the home of Palm Beach Council President David Rosow and a public rally at the Palm Beach County Convention Center. But before he heads over to the island of the rich and famous, he should stop by Harry's Banana Farm in Lake Worth. The dive bar famous for its billboard brilliance has a message for the Pizza King. And as usual, the delivery is impeccable.

There might not be much sightseeing from the window seat of a commercial airplane between Baltimore and Fort Lauderdale, except for maybe a rocket going into space next to your plane.

The Huffington Post reports these pictures of the space shuttle Atlantis launch were taken by Ryan Graff, who was making his way to Miami on a high school graduation trip.

Here are the pictures Graff snapped with his iPhone:

Rick Scott's Flack Provides "Proof" of Job Creation

jobs-newspaper.jpg

Gov. Rick Scott keeps talking about how he's creating jobs left and right, but the evidence has been a little hard to come across.

Good thing we came across a tweet from the governor's Twitter account that claimed his office has proof he's been getting Florida back to work:

"Passed this sign in St. Pete today, proof we are creating jobs and getting the state back to work!" the post says, including a link to a photo with this incontrovertible truth of job creation.

Check out the photo, taken by Scott spokeswoman Amy J. Graham, after the jump:

Hideous Giant Squid Found Off the Coast of Jensen Beach

Ever wonder what a 23-foot-long disgusting giant squid looks like?

Absolutely repulsive is what it looks like.

We got a hold of a photo from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, taken somewhere between the discovery of the squid off the coast of Jensen Beach, its necropsy at a Palm Beach County field office, and its delivery to the Florida Museum of Natural History for preservation.

Scenes From Lake Worth's 17th-Annual Street-Painting Festival

At the Lake Worth Street Painting Festival, renowned artists crouch down on the asphalt alongside high school kids and amateurs, everyone covered in chalk and happily sunburned. This weekend, the city's streets were filled with crowds guzzling funnel cake and beer, watching wide-eyed as the artists coaxed magic from the pavement. Here are a few highlights:

Yep, That's a Herd of Cattle on Clematis

Twenty-five cows meandered through downtown West Palm Beach today. Their leisurely noontime stroll, part of a month-long series of events called "Cowboys on the Waterfront," attracted plenty of gawkers and the occasional "yee-haw."

Humbling Wisdom, Courtesy of Harry

harry's sign 002.jpg

Harry's Banana Farm has been dispensing billboard wisdom for years, commenting on everything from Toyota's safety scandals to corruption among Palm Beach County commissioners. The Lake Worth bar is famous for its pithy commentary -- that, and the Penthouse designation as one of the sleaziest bars in America.

But this week's message, displayed prominently on North Dixie Highway, gave me pause because (a) it's probably accurate, and (b) on a slow holiday news week, it felt particularly humbling.

By the way, the other side of the sign features Harry's signature political analysis. "This year's special: BP Blackened Shrimp."

New Photo of Burn Victim Michael Brewer: Healing Well

Michael Brewer: In good spirits
Dozens of fans on Deerfield Beach boy Michael Brewer's Facebook page were thrilled to see the new photo his mother posted on Friday, showing Michael looking in good spirits and evidently healing well. Wrote one Facebook friend from Colorado:

"I am totally jazzed to see you looking so good! Keep up the good work. Few of us have any idea what you are going through, but all of us have known bad times, and it is great to see you getting better."

Brewer was burned over 60 percent of his body when nine boys surrounded him on October 12 and lit him on fire in a dispute over a $40 videogame. Although three of the boys -- Mathew Bent, Denver Jarvis, and Jesus Mendez -- are scheduled to be tried as adults on charges of attempted murder, 142 locals have added their signatures to letters received by the State Attorney's office on Friday asking that the three be tried as juveniles instead.
