The preferred vehicle of fraudsters.
A handful of middle-aged alleged fraudsters in northern Broward has been charged with a whole bunch of fraud and money laundering, accused by the U.S. Attorney's Office of raising more than $20 million for a fake investment scheme.

More than 700 folks were allegedly told they could invest in a company called Commodities Online LLC, which would buy them a share of existing contracts to buy and sell iron ore, fish, sugar, and other commodities. But... this is Florida, so those contracts didn't exist.

The indictment against James Howard III, Patricia Saa, Louis Gallo III, Michael Casey, and Rita Balbirer was unsealed this week. This isn't their first run-in with regulators.

The FBI announced a $5,000 reward yesterday for information leading to the arrest of a man they say robbed a Pembroke Pines Wells Fargo bank on March 29.

Police say the man fled on a dark-colored sport bike with the money stuffed in a black backpack. The backpack then opened on Interstate 75 and dumped an undisclosed amount of money into the shoulder, where people "were observed picking up the stolen money along the side of the road," according to a statement from Special Agent Michael Leverock.

"It's not about money. It's about sending a message." -- The Joker
Somebody get Hallmark on the phone -- there's a new celebratory month, and I have absolutely nothing to send out.

March, if you were not aware, is National Purchasing Month, and the Broward County Purchasing Division sent out a news release pointing out that the department has "facilitated 61,341 purchases for more than half a billion dollars... Purchasing Division Director Brenda Billingsley said it is also an appropriate time to reflect on the contributions of County government procurement to the local community."

Don't they look friendly?
We've only got about a month left before 2011 federal income taxes are due (April 17, everybody), and, even if you didn't make enough money to require filing a return, the IRS says you might want to.

Many people who don't have to file returns still have federal income taxes taken out of their paychecks -- in many cases, too much. In 2009, up to $1 billion in tax refunds went unclaimed in the U.S., including as much as $67 million in Florida alone. And the IRS is actually trying to give it back to you.

Howard Simon, executive director of the ACLU of Florida, has sent a letter to Gov. Rick Scott asking that the state end the practice of selling driver's license information, saying that the sales violate Floridians' expectations of privacy.

The sales of the information -- which includes a license holder's home address, age, gender, and the license number -- reportedly brought in $73 million for the state between July 1, 2010, and June 30, 2011.

The catch here is that the sales are completely legal.
