Rick Ross: Murder of Childhood Friend Raymond Adderly Jr. Still Unsolved

Categories: Crime, Homicide

At some point, a Carol City-bred corrections officers named William Leonard Roberts II stepped inside a phone booth and popped out as Rick Ross, a slow-jawing hip-hop He-Man. Although the Bawse preaches a drug-slinging, drive-by braggadocio, the gangster lifestyle -- as the media and haters have been quick to point out -- didn't initially gibe with Roberts' true background.

That's changed, though. As last month's shooting in downtown Fort Lauderdale shows, the street life now has a habit of violently reaching out for Ross and his inner circle. Another prime example of life copping moves from art: the still-unsolved 2010 murder of the Bawse's childhood friend, Raymond Adderly Jr.

Categories: Homicide

If you somehow haven't heard, 12 people were killed last night at a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises in Aurora, Colorado, just outside of Denver. Forty other people are estimated to have been wounded, and nobody knows why. Much will be written about the victims, though probably less than will be written about the accused killer, 24-year-old James Holmes.

One thing, however, is clear: The Dark Knight Rises, the capstone to the most talked-about trilogy since the original Star Wars franchise, was ruined on its very first night in theaters.

Hadley
Prosecutors say Port St. Lucie 17-year-old Tyler Hadley killed his parents last July. They say he sneaked up on his mother while she was on the computer, then beat her head in with a hammer. When his dad came in to see what was going on, police say they locked eyes before Hadley killed him too. Then he threw a house party. Oh, and he's allegedly running around jail signing autographs that say, "It's hammer time."

Now, an Associated Press story says Hadley is writing letters to friends in which he says he "believes he has 'such a strong defense' that he will reach a plea deal with prosecutors to avoid a life sentence."

In one letter, to a friend: "I'll get out."

Officials have confirmed that a decomposed body discovered by hikers in Coconut Creek's Tradewinds Park yesterday is 45-year-old Claudia Murphy, who was last seen wandering away from a Margate restaurant in March, according to NBC Miami.

Murphy's family spent weeks passing out fliers and searching for her; her husband, Frank Murphy, told New Times she had been suffering from "flu-type symptoms" that would occasionally leave her "totally out of it" but rejected rumors that she was suffering from amnesia and was lost.

Categories: Homicide

Well, we finally figured out what caused all that I-95 traffic drama Wednesday evening: Police say Deerfield Beach 30-year-old Glenn Thervil was killed by a shotgun-wielding acquaintance after arguing with the man about cigarettes.

Thervil got mad at the friend, 25-year-old Roderick Ferguson, as the two hung out with friends at Mayo Howard Park on SW 11th Way in Deerfield Beach. Police say Ferguson wouldn't give Thervil any more cigarettes, so Thervil threatened him with a handgun before two friends took him home and told him he shouldn't be pointing guns all willy-nilly at playgrounds.

Nicole Okrzesik, the 23-year-old accused of strangling Juliana Mensch with her boyfriend in March, pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder on Monday and has had her trial tentatively set for August 6. She could face the death penalty.

Though we reported that the original trial, with co-defendant James Ayers, was set for June 25, Broward State Attorney spokesman Ron Ishoy explains the charges had to be re-filed so Ayers and Okrzesik could stand trial together; initially, police charged only Ayers in the strangling of 19-year-old Mensch.

Police are still investigating the details, but they said yesterday evening that an "ailing" 82-year-old woman found shot to death in her Tamarac home was killed by her 86-year-old husband, who then killed himself.

Someone police described as "the couple's caretaker" heard gunshots shortly before 6 a.m. yesterday and ran outside the home on the 7800 block of Exeter Avenue; the Broward Sheriff's Office responded but called a SWAT team to go inside. Inside, they found Inez and Kenneth Goldstein together in their bedroom, dead of gunshot wounds.

Both are charged with first-degree murder -- a capital crime.

"They both could face the death penalty, although we reserve judgment for now as to whether or not to pursue it in this case, pending further analysis of the potential aggravating factors versus mitigating factors," wrote Broward State Attorney spokesman Ron Ishoy.

Nicole Okrzesik and James Ayers have been arrested in the March murder of 19-year-old Juliana Mensch.

We've already brought you the creepy text messages between Okrzesik and Ayers after the crime and the homicidal Google searches Okrzesik allegedly made, but there's more: In addition to text-message arguments about what to do with Mensch's body, Okrzesik and Ayers appear to have used Facebook chat to plot their next moves too.
