Rick Scott Purging Voters Like It's 2000

rick-scott-worst-ever.jpg
Dear Rick Scott,
Just a quick note to congratulate you on returning Florida to the electoral Dark Ages.

You began by reinstating an archaic rule that forces ex-felons to wait five years after completing their sentences to have their voting rights restored. Very strategic thinking on your part. Twelve years ago, when former Secretary of State Katherine Harris purged felons from the voter rolls, she "accidentally" scrubbed thousands of law-abiding citizens. The world also discovered that a disproportionate swath of Florida's disenfranchised felons were African-Americans. Clearly you were taking notes. The felon rule will eliminate voters on many fronts.

Now Secretary of State Ken Detzner is trying to remove thousands of "noncitizens" from the voter rolls in time for the August primary. Detzner, acting on your behalf,

The Hunger Games, Afghanistan Edition

It's not just a movie.
This week, Army Pfc. Michael Metcalf, a 22-year-old soldier from Boynton Beach, was killed by an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan. I read the headline in the the Palm Beach Post yesterday morning and, in the evening, met a friend at Cinemark Boynton Beach to watch The Hunger Games.

Now, I realize that some people who drooled over the book trilogy are disappointed in the movie. It's a gory blockbuster, long on blood and short on character development. It sells out to Hollywood while attempting to critique our culture. Fine. But that's not what I noticed. I came to the film ignorant of Suzanne Collins' books and their backstory. Metcalf More »

John Goodman's Girlfriend/Adopted Daughter Testifies in DUI Trial

Nope, no pillow talk about the crash.

Let's say you're sleeping with a multimillionaire who's on trial for DUI manslaughter, and you also happen to be the defendant's adopted daughter and trust fund beneficiary. No one expects you to be an unbiased witness. Yet Heather Colby's testimony in the John Goodman trial yesterday reached new heights of incredulity.

Although she was the first person Goodman called after the car accident that killed Scott Wilson in 2010 and she flew down to Miami later that day to be with him, Colby insists her lover never told her anything about the crash.

Colby is a golden-haired woman with a confident Southern smile and a cross chastely hugging her neck. On the witness stand, she was relaxed and warm, smiling at the prosecutor as she described her life as a stay-at-home mom in Atlanta.

Swapping Adam Hasner for Allen West Would Replace One Anti-Islam Politician With Another

adam-hasner.jpg
Hasner, the Jewish Allen West.

U.S. Rep. Allen West's departure from his Broward-Palm Beach district to run for a more Republican-leaning seat up north is undeniably good news for local Muslims. Finally, South Florida will be rid of a congressman who calls Islam "a totalitarian, theocratic, political ideology."

But don't start celebrating yet. Former state House Majority Leader Adam Hasner (R-Delray Beach) is seeking to replace West and has already received the congressman's ringing endorsement. Small wonder, because the two men share similar political tactics -- namely, getting ahead by spouting fear-mongering, anti-Islam rhetoric. (To read about how local Muslims are coping with such bigotry, see this week's New Times cover story.)

In 2009, Hasner invited anti-Islam nutbag Geert Wilders, a member of the DutchMore »

Allen West Fanboy Mark Levin Loses His Alleged Marbles After Reading New Times

Who has two thumbs and male pattern baldness? That guy.

Assuming Allen West fanboy and Rush Limbaugh-wannabe Mark Levin actually had any marbles to lose before he went on an on-air rant last week may be a bit of a stretch, although it does appear he successfully got that brick through his digestive system.

Who's Mark Levin? In short, some guy.

The longer version -- he's some guy who interviews Rep. Allen West on his right-wing radio program on occasion and last week took almost six minutes of airtime explaining his distaste for New Times and his apparent obsession with this writer.

Allen West: Where Was Your Leadership in Opposing the Payroll Tax Deal?

allen-west-military.jpg
Rep. Allen West
Whenever we point out the quirks of Rep. Allen West, there's always some dissent from his fans. In his defense, his supporters typically point out the leadership quality they see in the congressman.

West was given a chance to be a leader this past week, as he's opposed the two-month extension of the payroll tax cut from the get-go.

When it was thought that there would be a vote on the issue, West issued a statement affirming that he'd vote against what he's called a "short term fix."

PolitiFact: Where "We Have No Way of Knowing" Turns Into "Mostly False"

Who fact-checks the fact-checkers?

The Pulitzer Prize-winning analysts of political statements over at PolitiFact -- a project of the St. Petersburg Times -- ran a pretty curious rundown of one of President Obama's statements this week.

The claim: "Some billionaires have a tax rate as low as 1 percent." PolitiFact spoke to a tax-policy expert who said he didn't know -- as no available data exists to prove it -- and the so-called fact checkers said just about the same thing.

Ruling: Mostly false.

Dear Federal Court: Please Help Florida Suppress the Vote

let-the-people-vote.jpg
Racism? Not here.

To: U.S. District Court
From: Florida Secretary of State Kurt Browning

We're having a small problem with voting down here in Florida. In May, our Legislature passed some brilliant new requirements designed to crack down on unnecessary voters -- specifically, people who are poor, move around a lot, and might possibly have brownish skin. We're not racist or anything; we're just afraid these folks would lynch us at the polls if they were allowed to fill out ballots.

There's nothing sinister about the new rules. They make it tougher for get-out-the-vote

On 9/11 Anniversary, Allen West Blames "Radical" Islam, Never Mentions Bin Laden

Thumbnail image for allenwest.jpg
West continues his anti-Islam rhetoric.
Ten years ago, as the Twin Towers fell, there were fears the attacks would bring on a wave of anti-Muslim sentiment in America. Some people worried that every innocent citizen in a headscarf would be blamed for the terrorists' plot and that ethnic and religious profiling would become an accepted part of our national culture.

Now, Osama bin Laden is dead. American troops are withdrawing from Iraq, and many national leaders are contemplating the best way to leave Afghanistan.Yet U.S. Rep. Allen West is carrying on the anti-Muslim sentiment that highlighted the ugliest parts of our national

Rush Limbaugh Is Right: Obama Wanted Hurricane Irene to Be Worse

barry-obama.jpg
Obama needed a "heckuva job" moment.

Sitting in his Palm Beach mansion, a storm-weary South Floridian, Rush Limbaugh is right to scoff at the nation's reaction to Hurricane Irene. He contends President Obama wanted the storm to be worse than it was, and he has a point.

Fears about the storm were way overblown. Who cares about a little flooding and destruction in that liberal elite enclave of Vermont? Obama should never have called the storm "extremely dangerous." No one needed to evacuate.

He's so damned pragmatic, this infernal president. Why does he have to plan ahead so well? All those people in Battery Park and the Outer Banks should have stood on their rooftops and watched the predicted floodwaters rise, just like theMore »
