Best Meetup Group: South Florida Preppers Survives, Even After Gun Shop Closes

Thumbnail image for preppers-cover-small.jpeg
When we were putting together this year's Best of Broward-Palm Beach edition (out on the streets now), we stumbled across an old category we had dreamed up for something else: Best Meetup group (i.e. on Meetup.com).

I had just finished reporting a story about local preppers getting ready for a dollar collapse or other doomsday scenario. And it turns out they congregate through a Meetup group that brings together diverse members (old and young, gun nuts, families, single moms...) for occasional events. And they'd be more than happy to show you the ropes, if you're really interested.

OK, let's try this again.

Follow the links below to vote for your favorite haunts in our New Times Broward/Palm Beach Readers' Poll 2012. The results will appear in our annual Best Of Broward-Palm Beach issue June 14.

If that all sounds familiar, that's because we tried this in February with an internet poll system that was quickly hacked and stuffed with fake votes. So this time we have a foolproof plan (we think). We've set up a vote-by-text system that allows for only one vote per cell phone per category. That's, for example, one vote for Best Strip Club per phone.

Be sure to cast your votes before the poll ends May 14.

Our Readers' Poll, Like So Many South Florida Votes, Falls Victim to Ballot-Stuffing

hangingchads47.jpg
This guy was unavailable in helping us figure out our voter irregularities.
South Florida is the headquarters of the hanging chad, the originator of the butterfly ballot. So perhaps it should be no surprise that this year's New Times Readers' Poll appears to have been hacked.

How or why we're not sure, but it has become clear that the poll we made live on the internet ten days ago has fallen victim to some kind of, well, let's call it voter irregularities.

The problem first became clear last week, when John Todora called. He's the owner of Whiskey Tango, the joint in Hollywood that was winning in the Best Bar category. Winning is an understatement: More »

New Times Best Of App Gets Love From Wired and Apple

bestofapp.jpg
Just a few years ago, the web presence of New Times was the digital equivalent of a kid in a bowler hat yelling out the news next to the haberdashery.

Now, we've got a sweet new homepage, award-winning blogs, and apparently a smart phone app that rocks.

Sure, that sounds like we're using this space for some self promotion. And that's true. But our Best Of app has gotten some serious love from those who know about these kinds of things.

The app, just for some background, compiles all of the Best Of issues from New Times and its sister publications across the country. Open it in major cities across the country and it'll give you the best restaurants, bars, clubs, and everything else nearby.

It works well enough that Apple, which didn't invent the idea of a cell phone application but did make it a three-letter word -- included it in the "App Store Rewind 2011." Essentially More »

Florida Marlins first baseman Gaby Sanchez.
New Times Best of Broward-Palm Beach edition is here, folks.

In his rookie season, Marlins first baseman Gaby Sanchez hit .273 -- the third-highest among regular starters, behind Hanley Ramirez and Dan Uggla.

His rookie counterparts -- Logan Morrison and Mike Stanton -- were fantastic playmakers as rookies but didn't have nearly the production that Sanchez did.
