Celebrity Pot Dealer Says She's Starting a Marijuana Super PAC for Florida Election

Shuman posed for the cover of AdWeek in July.
Cheryl Shuman likes to be called the Martha Stewart of marijuana. She runs the Beverly Hills Cannabis Club out of L.A., which sells one of the first designer brands of pot. Her product runs $750 an ounce and comes wrapped in 14-carat gold. New customers often get star treatment: Chefs will come to their mansions to prepare cannabis-infused meals.

In fact, Shuman's clientele is star-studded. She says she's sold to celebrities like Justin Timberlake, who told Playboy in 2011 that he "absolutely" smokes. Other clients have to be kept on the down-low, and the business lacks a brick-and-mortar location in the Hollywood Hills.

"These are people who cannot go to dispensaries or be exposed as a pothead," Shuman explains.

Although she may be dealing to L.A.'s biggest names, the middle-aged blond has much bigger ambitions. She wants her company to become the Mercedes of marijuana -- and she has a business plan that she says includes an international brand of 420-friendly resorts. As weed becomes increasingly legal and less stigmatized, opportunities are arising for startups that can successfully market the drug.

There are significant roadblocks: Marijuana is legal as medicine in only 23 states and the District of Columbia and is legal as a recreational drug in two. But if Amendment 2 passes in November, Shuman will be one giant step closer to realizing her goal. Lots of celebrities and old people reside in Florida -- which would be the second-biggest market in the world behind California.

So Shuman has been scrambling to put together a super PAC in time for the elections. She says that plans for "Moms for Marijuana" were finalized only last Thursday and that she plans to register with the Federal Elections Commission this week. Currently, there are only three other marijuana-themed super PACS registered, and none of them has raised any cash.

Shuman's relying on Florida moms like Moriah Barnhart and Jacel Delgadillo. Delgadillo, who is from Miami, has a son who suffers from intractable epilepsy. Barnhart, who is from near Sarasota, has a daughter with cancer. Both have been active with the media, and in May they formed a group called Cannamoms to raise awareness for children whose lives would be improved by medical marijuana access. If all goes according to Shuman's plan, these moms will pull on heartstrings, fill the super-PAC coffers, sway the vote, and ultimately line her pockets.

"It's basically gonna be the mommy lobby," Shuman says. "That's really where we've been most effective. We wanna show that we're worthy of billions by using real-life stories that are compelling and rip the heart out of your chest."

Needs to be legalized in EVERY state. MARIJUANA IS NOT BAD, it helps so many different things, and has many uses. I've smoked for 20+yrs. And I work, support my own, and not a criminal. People need to understand the facts not the myths. If I want to smoke a herb, why is it illegal, cigarettes and alcohol are a million times WORSE , but yet its legal. Stupid, backwards government and our world. Love the herb!!!

Not sure why some of this is so hard to understand, not the legislation discussion, the Shuman discussion.  Is GOOGLE broken in Florida???

As long as she is spending her money to help pass amendment 2..more power to her.

As long as she is spending money and clout to get people voting yes on 2..I am behind her.

This is horrible the legislation is already written to where ONLY those who have run nurseries for 30-35 years can grow, which basically throws all young people, who would have the most passion and drive, out of the mix as far as being anything other than a laborer.... Now more big money comes in she'll just want to expand the monopoly to whomever she's directly profiting off of.

Quasi legalization and regulation is GARBAGE, it should be like any other vegetable, free for anyone to grow, or sell in small quantities, and once you start growing on a big scale then you can contend with taxes and regulations.

From there the market will work itself out, if some small scale grower isn't providing quality, the customers will go to the big chains. If someones child is acquiring from wherever it's a parenting issue, and no grower or dispensary really wants to deal with angry parents.

But for anyone to go vote Yes Nov. 2nd is about dumb, you're just voting more regulations of a plant that GOD made for man's use. Would be far more effective to preach the gospel of JURY NULLIFICATION, go on doing whatever you were doing, and quit voting to cage your fellow man when you're called to jury duty, and quit skipping it, every time a cool person skips jury duty some NAZI takes their place.

I support any actions to help pass medical marijuana in Florida. Bashing someone over wanting to sway votes when it's something you support is like shooting self in foot. There is a room for more than one kind of model in the cannabis industry, and as long as no monopoly is created and interest of all protected, than the choice is your to work with whomever. We live in a capitalist society and the free market reigns. If you don't like Cheryl, or feel she has taken advantage of you I understand and am sorry, but I've also talked to many that have no problem dealing with Cheryl. So for me to simple bash seems unproductive and likely to do more harm towards passing medical cannabis in Florida than anything else.

Start working at home with Google! It's by-far the best job I've had. Last Wednesday I got a brand new BMW since getting a check for $6474 this - 4 weeks past. I began this 8-months ago and immediately was bringing home at least $77 per hour. I work through this link, go to tech tab for work detail

Reprint please.  The better story here is how she tried to get into Fla but the public never let her off the plane.  She is not wanted, why would you make her out to be some kind of nice person with a real mission?  I'm confused as to  exactly what this publications agenda is when they support someone like this.  Your article clearly shows her in a "supported" light.  Print the real deal please

Deplorable to cover this woman in a positive light.  This publication should be ashamed for not doing their homework first and I agree with the poster below, your readers deserve an apolgy

After all the people she's hurt, the patients she's used and the lies she's told, if you still support Cheryl Shuman, you deserve the $750 ounces of mediocre marijuana you get. Wake up! The woman is a charlatan and a fake. Cheryl Shuman only cares about Cheryl Shuman. If that's not clear to you by now, then you need to take your blinders off. The fact that she's having to beg people to come here and say nice things about her, and the fact no one really has, should be your first clue. Let's see what spin she puts on this negativity.. because she is an EXPERT at the Cheryl Shuman spin. I will admit, watching the trainwreck is rather amusing, and confirms for me that karma is REAL.

And yes , it needs to awareness brought to it . I'll take everything they're giving and demand more . I , we deserve it .

@tonybowles Really?  So if Charles Manson said "I like kids", you'd make him an advocate for Ronald McDonald house or Easter seals or some shit?  Great thinking there.

This predator is simply looking for new hunting grounds as she's pretty widely unaccepted in any of the states shes done business in before.  Fla next?  Lets hope not

@sarahhadigan did you get to this sentence or just skip to the bottom: "If all goes according to Shuman's plan, these moms will pull on heartstrings, fill the super-PAC coffers, sway the vote, and ultimately line her pockets."

i'm pretty sure anyone who read the article and had half a clue about the issues surrounding Amendment 2 would be able to draw their own conclusions about her intentions. additionally, subtly and sarcasm are sort-of the stylistic cornerstones of alt weeklies.

@allie.conti @sarahhadigan I'm pretty sure the majority of commenters here have more than half a clue about both Florida and Cheryl. Allie, aren't you the same writer who did a piece about that RSHO garbage being legal in all 50 states? I for one am tired of the "sublety" and obscure-to-the-point-of-confusion satire trend in journalism.

@floridianforchoice @CandaceJ I think the FACT that you're... oops.. I mean she... is the most hated woman in the canna-community speaks volumes. Several of her victims have told our true stories and presented the facts in several publications. And it's all yours for the Googling. :)
