The mother of South Florida journalist Steven Sotloff released a video pleading with ISIS, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, for amnesty for her son.

Sotloff appeared in the video where a member of ISIS murdered and then beheaded American journalist James Foley. In the video, ISIS threatens the U.S. government with Sotloff's life, saying he would be killed next if the U.S. continues to bomb Iraq.

In the video, Sotloff's mother, Shirley -- a teacher from Miami -- directly addresses Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of ISIS and the self-declared caliph of the Muslim world.

"I am sending this message to you, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi al-Quraishi al-Hussaini, the caliph of the Islamic State," she says. "I am Shirley Sotloff. My son Steven is in your hands. You, the caliph, can grant amnesty. I ask you please to release my child. I ask you to use your authority to spare his life."

"As a mother, I ask your justice to be merciful and not punish my son for matters he has no control over," she adds.

In the video, Shirley Sotloff also says that she's been studying Islam since her son's capture, and pleads with Bakr al-Baghdadi al-Quraishi al-Hussaini to abide by the same principals the Prophet Muhammad lived by.

"I ask you to use your authority to spare his life and to follow the example set by the Prophet Muhammad, who protected People of the Book," she says. "No individual should be held responsible for the sins of others," she adds. "Steven has no control over the actions of the U.S. government. He is an innocent journalist."

Sotloff, a journalist who describes himself as a "stand-up philosopher from Miami" on his Twitter bio, was likely kidnaped in Syria sometime last Fall.

Shortly after ISIS released the video showing him and Foley, Sotloff's sister Lauren started a petition asking President Obama to do what he can to keep her brother alive.

The petition has 11,045 signatures thus far.

So far, the Obama administration has yet to publicly comment on the threats made on Sotloff by ISIS in their video.
