Fort Lauderdale Cops Tackle Critical Mass Cyclist on Video

Dan Littell says he was tackled by the cops for asking them to slow down.
Dan Littell was crossing Las Olas bridge as part of last night's Fort Lauderdale Critical Mass when a police vehicle whizzed by him and his fellow riders. He knew bridges were particularly dangerous places for cyclists in an already inhospitable town. In the past, Littell had been hit on both Sunrise Bridge and an overpass on Broward Boulevard near I-95.

So seeing a cop car flagrantly speed down a bridge crowded with cyclists compelled him to say something. "Slow down!" he shouted at the driver, just as he would have with any other person making the road unsafe.

But when that didn't work, Littell says he moved in front of the car, forcing its driver to keep his pace.

"There were kids on the ride," the 30-year-old explains. "Anyone could have swerved in."

Tempers flared once the car reached the end of the bridge. "The cop slammed on his brakes to try and get other bikes to hit him," Littell claims. "And when the ride slowed down, he tackled me."

....................seems like the police are causing more problems than the civilians

i have lately witness more police harassment against the homeless hobos downtown ft liquordale .................. and at least three dozen will get indicted on the rothstein matter - many senior officers, so things are closing to the end for some long term LEOs careers

once the bad eggs are removed maybe things will change for the better

what is it about aggressive asshole cyclists? They all have some excuse that they had a bad experience and that's why they are so defensive but it just doesn't wash for me, I think they do it BECAUSE its dangerous and they get a HIGH from it and then just like an addict they project their shit on everyone else around them.

These people are bullies on bikes. I have witnessed not once, but twice how they bang on peoples car hoods after the driver was waiting 6 or 7 red lights to change and the person starts blowing their horn. The last time a Jeep was half way thru the road and 6 or 7 bikers surrounded the car and wanted to fight the one guy in the car against 6 or 7 bikers.Dan Littell deserves what he got. They are always giving the finger to drivers and are the first "driving recklessly". We are not talking about a few dozen bikers, these are hundreds of bikers on the road and the city needs to stop them

when did it become magical for 100's of bikers to take over the road and pretend its ok? Bikers preach this "share the road" bs while they are on the road they cause more issues and take over the road.

If a cop tells you to move over on your bike you move your ass over its that simple.. if you want your kids to be safe dont' take them out after dark on a bike ride middle of a public street. go to a park and ride where cars are not allowed to drive around.

the cop was driving on the wrong side of the highway and then drove over the median to get back into the left lane on the right side of the bridge.  He could've knocked dozens of riders into the water.  Why do we need a video when he have dozens of eye witnesses?

There was absolutely no need for the cops to block the intersections for us. There was no need for the cops to block the left lanes, thus completely blocking the car traffic.  The cops clearly don't understand that our most important job out there on the road is keeping OURSELVES safe.

Alerting drivers that there are bicycles in the road by using a cop car is not at all helpful.  Car drivers need to be aware of everything around them at all times, regardless of police cars or not.

Dan the cyclist is a true American Hero. He risked his own body to prevent some crazed driver from endangering hundreds of innocent cyclists.

Imagine the carnage the PTSD'd maniac could have caused if allowed to run rampant over the poor bicyclists.

Riding a bike outside of the bike lane - or in front of moving cars - is stupid. Demanding that cars go the speed of bikes on a bridge is obnoxious. Critical Mass disrupting traffic to "make a point" is juvenile. Do all of this to a cop with his lights on - foolish. No sympathy.

I have a feeling of overwhelming joy when something bad happens to those vile juiced up animals...

As a cyclist, I can tell you that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard.

@eliteprxy The same time it became OK for hundreds and thousands of drivers to "take over" the roads. Bicycles are legal road vehicles (not "motor" vehicles, just plain vehicles) and have the right to a full lane of travel.

Yes Rj, sing the ignorance of your peoples! Let it be heard!

Who cares about the law! Who cares that an OFFICER used physical FORCE illegally and, by SUPREME COURT RULING, would have allowed for this man to LEGALLY choke and subdue the officer for his action.

Who cares that these officers do not follow the law and protocol and instead, want to become aggressive and take law into their hands!

Right bro, who cares!

Ok, so this guy committed a traffic infraction on his bike...same as if I ran through a stop sign with my car.  Either of which, a written citation is justified, not getting tackled and slammed to the street.  I was about 5 yards from this and it was brutal.  Nothing more than a juiced up cop with misplaced aggression.

Addressing only one point of your post - riding a bike outside of a bike lane is legal in every state on every road (with interstates and toll roads being an exception), and for good reason.  It is often much safer to ride a bike in a full lane rather than riding in a bike lane; for example:  cars parked in bike lanes, road debris accumulation, riders who travel faster than typical bike/jog lane users, a cyclist who is about to make a turn...these are all valid reasons that a cyclist would be outside of a designated bike lane.  Additionally motor vehicle drivers do not typically take cyclist into account who are in a bike lane, and as a result those cyclist are more likely to be hit by a car who is turning (right hook or left cross).  A cyclist who is in a car lane acting as any other vehicle signalling, however, is much safer.

Also, note that in both cities and rural areas there are road vehicles that travel much slower than cars that are certainly legal.  Within cities there are police officers on horse, carriages, and some utility vehicles that travel well below the speed of cars.  In rural areas there are tractors and farm equipment that regularly use the road, and they also travel much slower than car traffic.  A vehicle's speed does not dictates its worthiness to use a public road.

I do not know the particulars of this story so I will refrain from taking sides, but if the cyclist mentioned in the story did not deviate from the lane of travel, he was most certainly well within his legal road usage rights.  Whether or not he was provocative or reckless, I do not know.  I also do not typically agree with the behavior of critical mass riders and think that their message could be more effectively conveyed using other means, but I cannot change what others choose to do.

Please keep in mind that just because someone else's choice of transportation is slower than yours and may inconvenience you by a few seconds or even a minute does not mean it is "stupid."  I strongly doubt you would say an Amish family was stupid for using their horse and buggy for transportation, and yet cyclist travel just as fast if not faster and many choose to do so out of frugality and/or simply to get some exercise, which I'm sure you could agree are valid and understandable reasons.

Not a very nice way to refer to cyclists.

The guy was riding on the oncoming traffic lane, in other words on a two lane roadway with 1 lane of traffic on either dirrection he was going against traffic.

@RAMON24 All the bridges in Ft Laud are either 4 lanes or more. Las Olas has 2 east, and 2 west bound lanes.

Sry, but I had to correct your error....carry on...

This wasn't on a bridge where things began to get ugly with the cops, the bridge is where he first confronted police because of their speeding over the bridge on the 2nd lane traveling in the same direction only feet from where small children were riding with their families, the point where police took real issue with him is when he tried to cotrol the situation by not allowing a female cop in a squad care to pass him while he was traveling the wrong way in the oncoming traffic lane of a 2 lane stretch of road adjacent to the intercoastal. I saw exactly what happened. You may continue now as I felt the need to correct your correction because it seems you weren't present for the entire thing from inception to the incident finishing with him being tackled to the ground.
