In case you haven't heard, the Miami Heat's Udonis Haslem recently tied the knot with his college sweetheart, Faith Rein.

The New York Times released a heartfelt wedding announcement on the couple, chronicling their relationship from when before Udonis made it to the big time and became the Minister of Badassness for the Miami Heat and a three-time NBA champion.

But one particularly fascinating insight from the story seemed to stick out: a candid and emotional revealing of how the couple decided to get an abortion.

Faith became pregnant with UD's child during Haslem's senior year, and her junior year, at Florida, when Udonis was well on his way to becoming an NBA prospect.

The lack of finances, and their individual career goals were jeopardized, and the couple had to make a tough, but seemingly necessary decision.

Udonis already had a son with a high school girlfriend, and knew of the struggle and potential derailing another child could bring.

Mostly though, it was a matter of finances.

Timing, in other words, was bad.

From the Times:

Their first challenge took place the following spring when she became pregnant. It was her junior and his senior year, and he had begun training for the N.B.A. draft. Despite the pregnancy, she was busy with track meets and helping him complete homework. The timing was bad.

"I am not a huge fan of abortion, but we both had sports careers, plus we could not financially handle a baby," said Mr. Haslem, noting how he struggled with supporting Kedonis, the son he had in high school, who is now 14 and who lives with his mother.

"Udonis appreciated that I was willing to have an abortion," Ms. Rein said. "I found him caring, supportive, nurturing and all over me to be sure I was O.K. I saw another side of him during that difficult time and fell deeply in love. He had a big heart and was the whole package."

A difficult time, for sure. But a decision the couple made together, while being supportive of each other.

No matter what a person's opinion on the matter, this is a very candid reveal for a pro athlete, who tend to keep their personal lives and political opinions to themselves and never open up this much.

Particularly something so personal, intimate, and, quite frankly, tough.

It also speaks of UD's character.

Haslem has already established himself as a rock of a basketball player. He's the guy willing to make the dirty plays, dive for loose balls, and take fouls for the sake of the superstars to shine.

He also has his teammates' back, which has been evident of his flying retaliating elbows to any opposing player that dares foul Dwyane Wade or LeBron James too hard.

Haslem had a tough choice, but he and Faith persevered through it and handled it with maturity and grace.

The fact that this is public knowledge now is nothing short of fascinating.
