Florida Panthers Get Worst Turnout in History of Professional Sports

Roar?
Maybe it's because it was in the middle of a weekday afternoon.

Or there's the fact that the Florida Panthers will likely have a profoundly terrible season this year. Not to mention this is South Florida. And there's little redemption for hockey fans here.

A fact clearly on display Monday afternoon.

In what may be the worst turnout in the history of professional sports, the Florida Panthers' preseason opener against the Nashville Predators attracted roughly 13 fans.

This, however, wasn't enough to stem the excitement of the Florida Panthers communication office, which was apparently hallucinating phantom lines at the BB&T Center in Sunrise.

[UPDATE: Turns out, thanks to our lynx-eyed readers, we're totally wrong about this one. Whoops! Our B. The "lines" refer to the players lining up.]

Because according to Deadspin, this one photograph wasn't somehow a trick of framing to make it seem like no one showed up. Here's another picture from another part of the arena:

Maybe, just maybe, statistics guru Nate Silver of ESPN is right. The Panthers should move to Canada, where hockey's roar still silences other sports. Several months ago, Silver discovered that less than 5 percent of Broward and Miami's population would be considered "avid hockey fans." And it's nearly impossible for hockey teams to succeed economically in markets with fewer than 300,000 hockey fans.

(Yes, South Florida, in case you're surprised as well, there is hockey here.)

While overall ticket revenues have crept upward in the past two decades, these gains have been less than paltry.

It's gotten so bad, evidently even the Panthers' announcers want the team to move to Canada. Late last season, they went a tad insane during another slaughter of the Panthers, and, for reasons never fully explained, began wondering at the virtues of Winnipeg. ("Good Slurpees in Canada for whatever reason.")

The author of this article is a complete simpleton. Nice how you don't mention all of the fans at the 7PM preseason game on the same day (BOTH OF WHICH FLORIDA WON, BTW) Or the fact we have last year's Calder Trophy winning rookie on our roster, how we made the playoffs two years ago and clinched our division, and how we just signed goalie powerhouse Tim Thomas who led the Boston Bruins to Stanley Cup victory just a few years ago. If I see Terrance McCoy talk trash about our franchise again, he's going to have to deal with a few pissed off Cats fans personally.

Panthers made the playoffs 2 years ago, and the stadium was slammed, so yeah, apparently people do know there is hockey here. You're ingnorant, go write about something else.

Season ticket holder for 20 years.  A 2;30 game on a Monday followed by a game that evening against the same team?  I am surprised that 13 people showed up.

Literally the night before, they had 15000 people there for Depeche Mode, they couldve been handing out free tickets "Like its their job" to get people in for the 20$ parking and buying concessions, and drum up promotion for the season.  Total fail for the panthers marketing team.

^ Totally agree, $20 for parking is BS... BB&T can go **** themselves! They're not even a legitimate bank, when you go there you feel like you're on some reality show about to get punked, takes them forever to help you and no one knows what the hell they're doing ^

I can't believe anyone is surprised by this.

Ya, I'm going to take the day off work to watch a preseason game. With last year's LAST place and worst team in the league. Playing the Nashville Predators. At 2pm. On a Monday.

Right.

Was just up in Pittsburgh over the weekend, and the Pens advertised their 8 AM game on the radio, and several thousand people showed up. If we don't hear about it and they charge an arm and a leg for parking, no one will come.

Terrence McCoy, the most ignorant writer of all time, attempting to write about a sport and franchise that he clearly knows nothing about.

Maybe if you dedicated an extra 3 seconds of your time to this crap article, you would've noticed that the "phantom lines" you are referring to are the forward and defensive lines for the Panthers.

"the fact that the Florida Panthers will likely have a profoundly terrible season this year".... your ignorance and lack of real facts are just too much.  I could go on but then I'd waste even more time on you, and that's not something I'm interested in doing.

Good luck with your writing career.  It's clearly taking off.

Maybe they should stop charging so much on food and not charge for parking and stop being so greedy...things have changed since the BB&T took over as well...I was there Monday to support our Panthers is was dead they should of given away tickets outside to fill it up...very sad...

So what you are saying is Floridians only support their teams when they are winning.

@לשון הרע אזור חופשי BB&T has nothing to do with it, they are merely a sponsor. Get pissed at the Panthers.
