Ethics Complaint Filed Against Broward Sheriff Scott Israel

It appears that Broward Sheriff Scott Israel has had an ethics complaint filed against him.

According to Bob Norman, the complaint was filed by a former Broward Sheriff's Office commander over a five-day cruise to the Bahamas that Israel took his family on aboard a campaign donor's $35 million superyacht.

The yacht, which belongs to Israel campaign donor Robert Pereira, rents for $190,000 a week. Israel paid a total of $1,500 for five days.

The sheriff did not disclose his trip to the public.

According to Israel, Broward Sheriff's Office attorneys say state law only required him to pay the equivalent of an inexpensive cruise, which he did.

It was former Broward Sheriff's Commander Sam Frusterio who filed an official complaint to the Florida Commission on Ethics on Wednesday, saying that what Israel did is against the law.

The main beef here is that an elected official failed to disclose the trip, which looks pretty shady, no matter how you slice it. Florida law requires elected officials to report all gifts valued at $100 or more.

According to Norman, Pereira contributed $245,000 to a pro-Israel PAC that aired attack ads against former Sheriff Al Lamberti before the election this past November.

But it appears that Israel ain't worried.

"I did the laudable thing. I did the honorable thing as the sheriff of Broward County," Israel told Local 10's Michael Putney during a taping for This Week in South Florida. "I could have claimed it as a gift, but I decided to pay for it."

Israel told WFTL-850 last week that he'd support an ethics investigation regarding his yacht trip.

How is it that this guy Sam is so bad but Israel used him as his campaign treasurer?

It angers me that Local 10 allows these concocted “investigations” to be shown on the public airways.Michael Putney lied in the interview. He said there was an ethics complaint pending against Sheriff Scott Israel but it wasn’t filed until days after the interview. The fact is that Putney and Bob Norman arranged this fabricated complaint and then reported it as “news”.Shameful.Putney, as did his buddy Norman, insists on calling Sheriff Israel’s boat trip illegal which is contrary to journalistic ethics and a lie because Israel acted within the letter of the law.

Before this scheme to frame Scott Israel unfolded, trolls on the internet and Putney himself foreshadowed the business of this ethics complaint coming. Putney made reference to it on his show before it was filed and so did commenters who chimed in wherever the Scott Israel vacation story popped up. You've got to ask the question "Why did Mark Herron and Judy Stern stick their necks out in an effort to impugn the Sheriff?"

Putney said Isreal acted illegally-- that's also a LIE ! Israel acted within the strict letter of the law. These people are thugs.....get a life.

Sam Frusterio was FIRED by the Broward County Tax Assessor's office. Frusterio and his wife are on record having contributed $500 to LAMBERTI's re-election campaign in 2012. Frusterio was also FIRED from BSO. Are you getting the picture yet? There is a full-scale conspiracy to smear ISRAEL by the powers that be using disaffected dolts like Frusterio who will sign any paper to try to get them back in good grace with the corrupt power-brokers. Disgusting!

There is ample evidence that this is a put-up job by Channel 10. Bob Norman's accusations were at best, flimsy. While the Sheriff has very good legal opinions that no wrong doing was done, Norman and Putney continue to use words like "illegal" without cause. New Times readers are likely to dig further here in wonderment. Q: What do Putney and Norman have in common anyway? A: They both have the same boss. I leave it to NT investigators to discern why certain media groups have a vested interest smearing Israel   (can you spell L-A-M-B-E-R-T-I ?) Yes folks, Some people haven't gotten over the election yet and there's a big, complex web of advertisers (like those Lamberti awarded big government contracts to) and other tangled reasons why certain media mainstays (like Putney) and want-to-be's (like Norman and his wife Brittany at the Sentinel) are doing their best to discredit Scott Israel. It's not in the best interest of the citizens of Broward.

Israel had a choice of reporting the trip (a cruise with a friend's family, not really anyone's business anyway) as a gift or reimbursing his friend based on recommendations from his lawyer, which he ended up doing. This was not a secret trip and was followed to the letter of the law. What is the issue here??

This entire "phony" issue is just sour grapes by supporters of Lamberti still stunned by his defeat.

Sam Frusterio, the former BSO commander who filed the complaint, was fired from a job in the Broward County Tax Assessors office, he and his wife each contributed $500 to Lamberti for Sheriff in 2012 and he was subsequently let go from BSO. How many more non-stories about Sheriff Israel does Bob Norman have left in him?

Weird-- MIchael Putney said on this broadcast that there was a ethics complaint pending against Israel over this boat trip but there wasnt--until a week later.  Why would Putney say something that wasn't true ???

In fact Putney and his pal Bob Norman went out and arranged this a phony ethics complaint and then report it as "news"  They worked with disgraced Broward "lobbyist" Judy Stern to arrange the complaint - which by the way, was written by the Democrat lawyer who botched the 2000 Gore recount in Florida - guy named Mark Heron
