Alex Coelho, Beaten in Dirty Blondes Bar Fight: "Troublemaker"?

The scene after the beating Sunday
When the owner of Dirty Blondes finally issued a statement following his bouncers' savage beatdown of a patron last Sunday -- which was caught on video and has ignited a firestorm of criticism -- his words were terse.

"It looks like it was a bunch of troublemakers who came to the bar drunk causing trouble," bar owner A.J. Yaari told the Sun Sentinel last night. "Now, they are just trying to make us look bad."

Maybe it's because of all the pictures to the contrary. Or maybe it's because Alex Coelho claims to have trained to be a firefighter. Or maybe it's just because here at New Times, we routinely write about scum and our perspective is out of whack -- but one thing Coehlo most definitely does not look like is a "troublemaker." (Of course the accused Boston Bomber, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, also didn't exhibit any signs of malice, so appearances can be misleading.)

Coelho, 29, declined to comment for this story, so we don't know for sure. As did Coelho's recently retained lawyer, Christopher Mijares. "With criminal charges floating around, really, I can't say anything," says Mijares, declining to specify whether Coelho was still in the hospital or if he had plans to sue either the Dirty Blondes' bouncers or Dirty Blondes itself.

But "the videos and photographs currently circulating clearly speak to the brutal nature of what transpired," Mijares said.

Indeed, here's what this "troublemaker" looked like when he arrived at the hospital:

But if his social media presence is any guide, this, perhaps, isn't how Alex Coelho lived his life. Until this bar fight, he's never netted any criminal charges in South Florida, according to a survey of court documents in Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach counties. (After Sunday's altercation, he was charged with one felony count of battery on an officer and another of disorderly conduct.)

Rather, Coelho seemed to be a man stringing together numerous restaurant jobs across Broward County and enjoying sun-splattered afternoons with his girlfriend.

Alex is one of nicest, good-hearted people I know. TO question him to being a troublemaker is Ludicrous!

I too have been friends with Alex for years and of all the guys i know he would be the first to avoid getting into confrontation.    Those bouncers didnt have the right to do what they did and SHAME ON FORT LAUDERDALE PD for making the arrest that they made.   Those officers were wrong!  If the officers involved didnt know at the time that they were wrong then they clearly didn't look at the battered victim verses the bouncers conditions!

I went to high school with Alex and he's been my waiter at Long Horn in Pines several times over the years. He's a really nice guy...harmless!

i don't have ALL the details BUT i know what i saw in a video was a person (A) taken from behind (by B) and thrown to the ground who then had his head stomped on (by C) - then he (A) got up and ran away from the attack

i did not see any agression from the person (A) during the entire video

based on that video both (B) and (C) should be criminally charged with agrravated assault on (A) but it seems it was (A) who was the one arrested (who seems to also have a possible civil suit for damages from that attack)

The guy should have left had several chances no one made him stay the girl was telling him to go but he didn't listen so he got beat maybe next time a bar asks him to leave he will an not argue with the bouncers an leave arguing wasn't going to get anywhere

New Times stop trying to stir up 'ish!  Didn't your sister paper in Dade just report on an Assistant DA who got arrested at Purdy Lounge for being drunk and disorderly?   Liquor make good people do bad things. Not saying this is the case... I don't know. And you don't either.

Somebody's getting paid to put a spin on things.

the Bouncers clearly are 2 pussies...Big Fat Heavy D holds one threw the back ( NO CHANCE to defend him self ) and 2nd Monkey starts throwing punches at the other dude without him looking or waiting on it. That tells a lot of how pussy of a man each one of those bouncers are.

Shocked that the Bouncers weren`t arrested and this poor man wasn`t issued an apology! Dirty Blondes should be shut down! Thats not a place anyone should want to be seen in!

you can plainly see by the video no matter what happened inside he and others were Jumped. Sucker punched by scum. Maybe we do all need guns here in this sh*t hole.

Some times bouncers are body builders on ROIDS, they should check those guys. An ex room mate had terrible Roid rage, all he wanted to do was beat people up.

This is truly a disappointing outcome. Arrest the victim. I have to admit, I am a little uncomfortable with the entire concept of DETAIL WORK by police officers. They are hired by a private establishment, in this case the ELBO ROOM, yet are still allowed to arrest people.... arrest victims? Victims who are in need of medical attention. Seems like a conflict of interest to me.

@James_S_Martin Yeah - real nice guy! Won't leave a bar - is in the video yelling at someone inside and clearly didn't get beaten enough because he came back to fight the cops and was arrested for THAT! If that's not the definition of a troublemaker I don't know what is. Now this guy wants to be a victim. They need to show the video of him fighting the cops a short while later.

BeachBum

@C.ZIMMERMAN But he is in the video confronting people before he gets a proper beating. Nice people don't get all the bouncers trying to throw them out of a bar and still won't leave then come back to fight the cops.

@vmartin4686 Clearly you didn't see the second video where he comes back to fight the cops. Even in this short video he is not leaving despite having all the bouncers in the bar trying to get him to leave. I don't think he got enough of a beating since he came back. Hopefully he stays of the beach and finds another place to make a scene.

@greaseman1 That little dot at the end of your first sentence is a period.  There's no need to type it twice.

@tronic23 If all the bouncers in a bar have to come to the front to try and get you to leave and you STILL won't leave - expect they will show you how to leave.

from the video it appears the guy who got attacked was on the sidewalk which would be public property - no ?

even if that is part of the establishment does that give a person the right to physically attack him and throw him down and then stomp on his head ?

i just don't see where a patron drunk and unruly as they are should be physically attacked no matter the circumstances - especially since it is the establishments responsibility to avoid OVERSERVING someone - no ?

@ecasas8253 ...This incident did not happen at Elbo Room. It happened at Dirty Blondes. I know it's confusing when you're a sloppy drunk. I guess it doesn't really matter what corner you're heaving in. Can you even read this. Why did I just waste my time trying to correct a mentally incapacitated drunk...?

Agreed beachbum an if he's not a troublemaker then he just can't handle his liquor cause he clearly didn't leave when asked to looks like he was picking a fight he didn't win. Only thing I heard from a bouncer was have a nice day go home.

@BeachBum @C.ZIMMERMAN

Don't you find it interesting that the bouncers have criminal records a mile long but he doesn't? Yeah, they are real stand-up guys. By the way, thibnk about the logic of the bar thing. Isn't the point for them to serve plenty of alcohol, but then the only way the animal bouncers know how to handle a drunk person is to gang jump them? You really think a head stomp on a guy who is on the ground in the fetal position is necessary? You're obviously a dirtbag.

soko.jen

@frankd4 agree with you. EVEN if the patrons/victims were causing problems and needed to be thrown out, I've seen plenty thrown out of places without that type of physical action and beating! He was CLEARLY not fighting back so they could have used force to really kick him out instead of beating him out @tronic23 .

@rrlevy272 @ecasas8253 Dirty Blondes and Elbow Room are owned by the same person.  So the fact that they said Elbow Room hired them is actually a perfectly correct statement.  Can you even comprehend this? Why did I just waste my time trying to correct a know-it-all who feels the need to comment on things he really has no clue about.

@soko.jen @frankd4 @tronic23

i have never seen a employee as "SECURITY" stomp on someones head while on the ground - have YOU ?

that has to be CRIMINAL no matter what the dude on the ground did previously

apparently the FT LIQUORDALE police has not made an arrest of that employee so it seems they are protecting their good ole boys FIRST and patrons not at all

ALL VISITORs and GUESTs and TOURISTs should be made aware of this episode so that they can make an advised choice in their travel plans and destinations

Yaari owns Dirtys. Not Elbo. Elbo has been around longer then Yarri has been alive. You can see what company's the owner of Dirty Blonds owns on their website.
