Rick Scott Signs Bill Banning Paid Sick Leave

Categories: Great Scott!

Rick Scott, in an apparent mission to blow up every possible bridge linking him to re-election in 2014, signed a bill on Friday banning paid sick leave for Floridians, because, as much as they love to talk up how they hate Big Government and Bengazziiii and TAXES BAD, the GOPers simply love this ever living shit out of their money, and the only path to more of it is by screwing poor people.

Ha. Ha. Sorry poor people! You're just not allowed to get sick. Now sack up and get back to work!

The bill, which was backed by poor loving corporations such as Disney World, and the people that own Olive Garden and Red Lobster, blocks local governments from implementing paid sick leave legislation.

Florida's House Majority Leader, Steve Precourt (GOPz), who played a major roll in putting forth the bill, is a member of the American Legislative Exchange Council, the GOPer group responsible for getting these kinds of laws passed throughout the U.S. because MURICA!

The group calls the no paid sick leave laws "preemption bills," because screwing the working people of America has to have a super catchy name that sounds like it's a healing balm for the soul of the nation.

And, of course, corporations and their lobbyists see the bill as necessary to cut down costs, because what kind of business are we running when people get attacked by viruses and get cancer and need to rest and want to get paid so they can keep their lights on??

PFFFFFFT.

A group trying to keep the ballot referendum that would get paid-sick leave on a ballot collected 50,000 signatures in a petition.

But Disney and their Big Business pals forced commissioners to keep it off the ballot. And that's exactly what they did, in a 4-3 vote.

And then....

A three-judge circuit panel ordered it on the next ballot. Commissioners soon after voted to send it to Orange voters in the August 2014 primary contest.

But those who opposed the measure from the beginning had discussed such a delay-and-kill plan.

On the eve of the Orange County Sept. 11 vote, local GOP leader Lew Oliver texted a commissioner that the board only needed to delay the proposal long enough for the Legislature to deliver a "kill shot."

Kill shot.

Ah those GOPers. Always such wordsmiths that capture the moment so perfectly.

Are the Florida power brokers seriously trying to cause epidemics to wipe out whole workforces?  The idea that a waitress who contracts viral pnumonia should be required to keep on going to work seems like a sure path to epidemic.

Most companies no longer offer sick days. What they did instead was simply give all employees paid time off and add an extra week for everyone. That way it is fair to all employees, and no one has to lie and fake like they are sick to take a day off work. I managed the HR of a company that had this policy, and the employees all liked it better than having sick days.

Look folks, i am totally on your side in this, but you do our side no favours when you headline overstates the case.  It is not really a ban on sick days.  it is a way to make them more unlikely, yes, but not really a ban.  Please take care.  We ARE the side of reason; they ARE the side of greed, and tho it will hurt people it is not exactly how you are putting it.

“Eighty percent of Floridians say that workers should be able to earn paid sick days, and six in 10 want localities to be able to make their own laws. But Florida legislators refuse to listen to voters. Instead, big business associations and local power players like Disney and Darden Restaurants have convinced them to shut down local governments’ ability to pass their own paid sick days standards. It is shameful that the same state legislators who claim to be for “local government” are pushing through a policy that essentially ties its hands.”

My job (for 21 years) has NEVER had a paid sick leave policy. You're sick, you don't work, you don't get paid. Just the way it is if you work here.

No excuses do not get sick if you do come to work and sneeze in your boss;s face,However if you happen to die you will need a note from your Doctor.

Florida's version of "The Onion."  Anyone with an ounce of sense knows that the governor of any state cannot pass a law like this, and neither can the state legislature.  It would get laughed out of court.

You need to read the original story, and perhaps take a look at the bill. The sensationalist, distorting NewTimes media empire is not a reliable news outlet. And I'm speaking as someone who would like to see Rick Scott's head explode.

I knew this nurse who went to work at her new career and after a few days the other nurses "from other countrys" bullied her to not work so hard.. they set her up to fail..since she was outnumbered she went to a supervisor ..also ..from another country.she was labeled a trouble maker...and we wonder why things are so f?cked up..i suspect this in other business...how does this happen?.. i think the types of things have become the norm..i guess thats why these polititions are trying and failing to get these people to work...they probably wouldnt have to do these things if the work ethics and such would be followed..it takes more energy to waste time than it takes to work..and you feel a sence of accomplishment at getting something done..

there is no free lunch.

in America, we have the choice to create our on jobs, or work for someone else.  If you don't like the benefits, leave and find a better job.  Or just create your own company and make your money the way you want.

Socialism  has higher unemployment rates  than our republic.

(Please show me where socialism has worked better )

@Tammy Hauk  Me either. I think some white collar jobs may have this as a perk, but I know blue collar jobs do not. You might could take vacation time if you have it. Just another liberal BS campaign to call Scott names. LIbtard ignorance on display!

onthesquare357

@Tammy Hauk I never got paid for sick days, unless I wanted to use my vacation time for it. I think that it's mostly white collar companies that might offer a few paid sick days, but Blue collar jobs do not for the most part. Just another stupid topic to label Scott as some monster. What idiots!

@Tammy Hauk Right, because paid sick leave is evil. Just like help for the disabled is evil. If you're in a wheelchair, you will be a stronger person in the long run if you crawl up the stairs. Amazing.

@Id10T Where has socialism worked better?

For starters, Luxembourg, Norway, Switzerland, Australia, Denmark, Sweden, Canada, the Netherlands, Austria, and Finland all have higher personal income, higher take home pay, and better healthcare than the US. They are all socialist.

They have lower rates of violence, and less than 1/6th the prison population of America.

They have an average 26% tax rate, the same rate my wife and I pay.

Their debt to GDP is vastly lower than America, and almost every other nation owes them money. They also produce more goods than America.

The highest performing socialist nation in the world dominate manufacturing, including Germany and China. Germany produce 6 times more than America. In fact, Germany is the world's top exporter, beating both the US and Canada. Germany is 1/6th the size of the US and still kicks our rears.

All of these counties maintain this economic success while providing a strong social safety net for people who do find themselves unemployed, and strong benefits for pregnant women, new families, children (including education through college) and good benefits for their elderly. They also provide socialized medicine and end up with a healthier overall population.

They also all tax their wealthy at higher rates than we do and they tax and regulate their corporations much more than we do. And despite this, not only are these nations not falling apart -- they are thriving with an economy that dominates ours.

Congratulations on hearing something on Fox News and being completely wrong about how life really works.

@Id10T okay.  I don't want to fund your fucking wars.

I'll refund the couple million or so for unemployment benefits.

You give me back, oh say, $3.5 trillion fucking dollars. And countless lives lost or ruined.

@onthesquare357  What is the purpose of the ban? If a local government wanted to extend paid sick days from just being a perk of white collar workers to all their citizens, including blue collar workers, they can't now. Why is this any of the state governments business?

edekit

@onthesquare357 Union companies do offer sick and personal days off with pay.  Generally limited by a formula for earning them.  Some contracts even allow saving them up so a broken leg will not cost you your house, car and job.
