LeBron James Expresses Support for Jason Collins
Dwyane Wade was the first of the Miami Heat players to express his support via Twitter. And now LeBron James has chimed in with a strong show of support, calling Collins' announcement "very cool" and "noble."
"None us should go around wondering what other people think we should be as human beings," James told reporters at Heat practice on Tuesday.
"I think it's very strong of him. I think it's very noble of him. I got the utmost respect for Jason and for whatever he wants to do."
Mike Miller, who played with Collins when the two were members of the Memphis Grizzlies and is mentioned in the Sports Illustrated column written by Collins, also showed his support.
"I support him 100 percent," Miller told the media. "He's a great teammate. I was a teammate of his. I was happy to be a teammate of his. That's all that really matters."
Collins mentions Miller in his column as someone who would remember him as a great teammate and a man of character, more than anything.
"As I write this, I haven't come out to anyone in the NBA. I'm not privy to what other players say about me," Collins says in the piece. "Maybe Mike Miller, my old teammate in Memphis, will recall the time I dropped by his house in Florida and say, 'I enjoyed being his teammate, and I sold him a dog.' I hope players swap stories like that. Maybe they'll talk about my character and what kind of person I am."
According to Miller's comments, Collins got his wish.
Heat Head Coach Erik Spoelstra also showed his support, saying, "I'm sure it's something he's been thinking about for a long time, probably a big pressure off of his shoulders now. NBA is a fraternity. Good to see players in that fraternity support him."
