Texting and driving is even closer to being an illegal thing in Florida. The Senate has unanimously voted to push through Bill SB 52, banning texting while driving on Florida's roads.

The law would allow texting while a vehicle is stopped, texting while at a red light, or voice-command texting.

But actual texting while driving would be verboten

The bill must now pass through the House.

Florida remains one of the few remaining states without a ban on any form of texting and driving in the U.S.

Legislation to ban texting and driving has been filed every year since 2008, but this is the first time it's gotten this far.

"Last year when I stood here, we were one of only six states that had nothing on the books. This year, we're one of only five states," Sen. Nancy Detert told the Orlando Sun-Sentinel.

"We lose about 11 teens a day [nationally] thanks to texting while driving," she added.

Progress has finally been made.

The bill had gotten the go-head via a vote by the House Economic Affairs Committee a few weeks ago, and now it has passed the Senate.

The House before the session ends May 3.

The measure proposes a law that would make texting while driving a secondary offense, which boils down to a person getting a ticket for it only if he or she was pulled over for some other road violation. The ticket for texting and driving would be $30, plus court costs.

Can someone DEFINE TEXTING?  reading emails?  google maps?  pandora?  facebook?  or only actual text messages?

in SFO, someone got a ticket for using google maps -traffic, while stopped in traffic.  -lost on appeal too.

The law would allow texting while a vehicle is stopped, texting while at a red light, or voice-command texting. But actual texting while driving would be verboten. Makes sense.

THANKS NEW TIMES :D

I LOVE IT! If it's that important - pull over! I for one have had enough of being stuck in traffic only to find out that the "traffic" was some inconsiderate ass driving slower than everyone else because they were too busy texting!

Finally... I cannot even count how many times I have almost been hit by a text-driver without them even knowing it.
