FAU Student Suspended for Not Stepping on Jesus

FAU professor Dr. Deandre Poole was running a classroom exercise from a textbook titled Intercultural Communication: A Contextual Approach, 5th Edition in her Intercultural Communications class.

And, apparently, one of the exercises involves writing the word Jesus on a piece of paper, placing it on the floor, and then stepping on it, for some reason.

One student refused to participate, on grounds that stepping on Jesus' name offends him as a religious person. And now that student has reportedly been suspended.

The student, Ryan Rotella is a junior from Coral Springs. He's also a deeply religious Mormon who goes to church every Sunday.

So, as it is with Rotella's beliefs, stepping on the name of Jesus is not cool.

"Anytime you stomp on something it shows that you believe that something has no value," Rotella explained.

"So if you were to stomp on the word Jesus, it says that the word has no value."

Sounds reasonable enough. Yet FAU doesn't see it that way, and now Rotella has been given the heave-ho from the class

Rotella says his classmates all took part in the exercise, but he explained to Dr. Poole that he would not, because it offended him.

Rotella also says he went to an associate professor at FAU to talk about the incident, and then found out soon after that he had been suspended from the class.

FAU has said or done pretty much nothing since Rotella's suspension, except release an extremely vague statement to CBS12 about the incident:

"Faculty and students at academic institutions pursue knowledge and engage in open discourse. While at times the topics discussed may be sensitive, a university environment is a venue for such dialogue and debate."

Last we checked, "open discourse" includes respectfully disagreeing with others as well as not engaging in things one finds hurtful or offensive without fear of being shunned.

Yup, it's been a banner twenty-four hours for FAU presidents and professors.

This is a sick disgrace! If it had been President Obama's name or Muhammad's name, and people refused, would they have gotten in trouble!?? That joke of a teacher needs to be suspended  How dare he! How dare this school??? What a outrage and this is just another example of how many people do not care about out God and Jesus.

This is crazy..they could have used any other name. Why require someone who believes in God and Jesus to do such and exercise. Yes college is about learning, debate, and communication but you should not be required to go against your beliefs or religion to be educated. If they had put something about alternative lifestyles on the paper everyone would be in an uproar screaming discrimination. When this happens to Christians it is okay and overlooked. I would sue the school for discrmination. I am so glad he stood up for his beliefs!

@roshina Did you get this pissed off when the Catholic priests systemically raped little boys over a period of 5 decades?

@ChazStevensGenius @roshina

Those weren't Catholic priests.

They were homosexuals who infiltrated an anti-homosexual institution under false premises.

How do you feel about homosexuals who "raped little boys"?

@bobsims437 @ChazStevensGenius @roshina The problem with your co-called rebuttal.

The Catholic Organization engaged in a four-five decades long coverup.

This wasn't some rogue operator.

Now be a good lad, put down your bible, and pick up a science book for once.

It is a University not church.

@vinesa Then WHY use the name of Jesus?  Why not Mohammed, or perhaps, Barack Obama?  Or how about the professor's name or the President of the University?  WHY THAT NAME? for the sake of  "edutainment" and all the "independent thinkers" that university seems to have produced??? Lemming mentality... I find it both insulting and pathetic...disgusts me.

@grupje Because it evokes the kind of response you are showing right now.  It is a name on a piece of paper the only thing in a name is the belief one puts in it. While in college I had professors require that you participate 100% in classroom activities or you are out.  College is about pushing boundaries and being uncomfortable and learning to overcome and get past what is put in your way.

@vinesa @grupje While I agree that 100% participation is expected, the healthy debate and argument against the action, should have sufficed as participation.  Real education should be to teach people to think about a problem and solve it, not blindly follow instructions of others.  There is a difference between pushing boundaries and being forced to do things that one considers immoral.

FAU needs to consider renaming itself to "The University of Dennis Rodman."
