The Proposed Broward County Pit Bull Ban Withdrawn

pit bull cute.jpg
Proposal goes down in flames.
A proposal to ban pit bulls in Broward County, which has roiled the community for days, was withdrawn today at the county's commission meeting.

Two other proposals, one of which carries a $500 fine for training pit bulls to fight and another that imposes a $300 fine for failing to vaccinate a pit bull, were passed.

But the most contested element of the meeting, a motion by Vice Mayor Barbara Sharief, who wanted to lobby the state Legislature to allow Broward County to ban pit bulls, was met with scores of angry protesters today, inveighing against the proposal.

Her office, however, greeted the withdrawal with optimism.

"This wasn't a disappointment at all," said one spokesperson. "It's a positive step. The penalties in place right now for pit bulls aren't as stiff as they could be. And this is a victory for those who want tougher penalties for those who teach dogs to fight. This is a major victory for Broward County."

The withdrawal marks the end of an extremely sharp and extremely fast retreat by Sharief.

At the end of last week, she said she was confident the motion would pass and used forceful language in calls to ban all pit bulls in Broward County.

Then, Monday afternoon, she tempered the motion's language so that every pit bull already in Broward County -- if approved by the state Legislature -- would be granfathered in. She told New Times she'd worked years on this proposal and was surprised that it was met with such fierce opposition.

New Times will update this story as more developments occur.

Terrence your story is incorrect. Please update it.

"Two other proposals, one of which carries a $500 fine for training pit bulls to fight and another that imposes a $300 fine for failing to vaccinate a pit bull, were passed."

That's not true at all. Item 52 B (about the fines) has NOTHING to do with pitbulls. Please correct this.

And as for this part about Sharief:

"At the end of last week, she said she was confident the motion would pass and used forceful language in calls to ban all pit bulls in Broward County. Then, Monday afternoon, she tempered the motion's language so that every pit bull already in Broward County -- if approved by the state Legislature -- would be granfathered in. She told New Times she'd worked years on this proposal and was surprised that it was met with such fierce opposition.

It just proves she speaks out of both sides of her mouth. She went on the record with NBC that she wasn't trying to ban pitbulls. But yet...

It was political suicide either way you look at it with animal lovers come (re) election time. Guaranteed.

I just read a story about a pack of Chihuahua's attacking a girl and sending her to the hospital.  This happened in Oregon.  Can you imagine if this happened here?  I can't because if it did, I highly doubt this would even be covered by any media source.  No pit bull in the incident, then it's not news.  Any dog can harm, to single out one type of dog winds up killing innocent dogs.  Stop blaming everything on the dogs and start looking at the people.  Owners who fight them, owners who don't know how to handle a large breed dog.  People leaving their kids unattended, which should never be done no matter what sort of dog or pet you have!  But I guess it's easier to just kill the animal instead of blaming the PERSON who should have been more responsible.

That's fine.  as long as there are severe penalties for anyone who owns a dog that bites anyone.

this should be no different than parents responsibility of a child, or owning a gun.  if your dog bites someone you are responsible for the medical bills, and will be fined or jailed.

why should anyone else pay for owners irresponsible behavior.

to those who own Pitbulls...........keep them safe......It was wrong od the county to ban Pitbulls , that goes for any other city/county......It ia the owners that are to blame not the dog,,,,,,I wish I could have one again but my landlord is afraid of them and refuses to listen to their defence,,,,,,,,  please keep you Pit safe........

Yeah, all dogs can be dangerous if they have owners that won't train them properly so they should never pick on one specific breed. I know some very small dogs that are pretty dangerous and the owners have never trained them and just let them do whatever cause they're small. They need to give people tests before they can get a dog...it's awful all the dogs that are left homeless cause the owners can't deal or they are abused which is another sore spot....dogs are better then people in my book and deserve respect and honor...they are our non judgemental and if you give them love they will return it tenfold......all dogs!

I was there today and it was amazing. I was fortunate to have met so many kind, caring and like-minded people. The testimonies they gave were precise, factual and compassionate. Dog people are a different breed of human and it feels awesome to know that we made a difference! I hope all of the great people that came to support are celebrating with some biscuits and belly rubs tonight!

It never had a chance, due to state laws that trump local breed specific bans. (Except for Miami-Dade, which prompted the state law)

@WickedCats If these were pit bulls she would be dead.  nothing would be able to get them to stop other than bullets.  These chihuahuas were scared off by yelling and a single swing of the arm.  Your point doesn't make sense, all it proves is how rare it is for another dog to be the aggressor in a human attack and also proves how little devastation these other breeds can cause compared to an unrelenting pit bull.

@joemamma They already ARE responsible if their dogs attack, just like everyone else if their dogs attack.  Whatever gave you the impression this wasnt the case?

@BeeJay Lee I don't understand how your testimonies of how these monsters are your babies or whatever should matter. you are obviously going to say that.  Only facts and stats on how many pit bulls attacks occur annually and pictures/testimonies of victims should matter.  These animals turn on a dime, attack unprovoked and cause devastating damage - they are  class of their own.  They are not just like any other dog.

@pascalefmoffet @WickedCats Even if that's true wicked, that fact is any breed can be aggressive! If a pack of siberanian husky attached her she might be dead, and so on. The point is aggressive dogs will be put down, but not every single dog in a breed is aggressive.

They are morally responsible sure, and usually to some degree legally responsible, but the actual specifics of legal responsibility vary widely. In a lot of cases the practical outcome of a serious dog bite incident is that the dog pays with it life and nothing much happens to the owner.

@pascalefmoffet was sleeping during every math class and just doesn't understand basic concepts.  Also, this phrase appears many places, but the haters cannot keep their percentages consistent.  So this was just something pulled out of who-knows-where.

Though @pascale can't learn, I'm confident everyone else WILL understand and remember the difference between simple COUNTS vs RATES.  Here's an example using HUMANS which for some reason people feel is easier to ACCEPT.

PIT BULLS ARE NOT THE MOST DANGEROUS DOGS.  Dog-bite related fatalies are HIGHEST for ROTTWEILERS, then CHOW CHOWS, then GERMAN SHEPHERDS then PIT BULLS.   There just aren't as many of them so the COUNTS are not the highest.

THAT MEANS THAT HUMANS ARE SAFER WITH A PIT BULL THAN A GSD, ROTTIE OR CHOW.  PERIOD.

Furthermore, the term "pit bull" is a generic term that groups MANY MANY TYPES OF DOGS - both purebreds and mixes - so a dog called "PIT BULL" of course will have the MOST bites - that is merely a mathematically predictable and a logical outcome.

Let's use armed robberies as an example of COUNTS vs RATES - if the NUMBER of those committed in Vermont is compared to those committed in CALIFORNIA - IS THAT A FAIR COMPARISON?  Or do they divide the number of robberies by the number of people in each state to get a RATE so we can fairly compare?

Let's say we decide to ALSO lump in ANYONE WHO EVER LIVED IN CALIFORNIA - what happens to robbery COUNTS?  And also lump in anyone whose PARENTS ever lived in CALIFORNIA?  And anyone who LOOKS like a Californian?  NOW WHAT IS THE COUNT OF ARMED ROBBERIES?  DOES THAT MEAN THAT CALIFORNIANS ARE THE MOST DANGEROUS, AGGRESSIVE AMERICANS?

THE ONLY THING THAT HAVING THE HIGHEST BITE COUNT INDICATES IS THAT BREED/TYPE HAS THE MOST DOGS.  I AGREE THERE ARE TOO MANY PIT BULLS AND TOO MANY BAD BREEDERS BREEDING PIT BULLS WHO SELL TO BAD OWNERS WHO DO NOT PROPERLY TRAIN, SOCIALIZE AND CAR FOR THEIR DOGS.  PIT BULLS ARE THE MOST NEGLECTED, ABUSED, CHAINED, UNNEUTERED/UNSPAYED, IMPROPERLY RESTRAINED, MISUNDERSTOOD TYPE OF DOG ON THE PLANET.  THAT IS DUE TO SCUMBAG HUMANS WHO GET THEM  FOR THE WRONG REASON.  HOWEVER, THE VAST MAJORITY OF PIT BULL OWNERS ARE RESPONSIBLE AND DO WHAT ALL OTHER DOG OWNERS DO - TRAIN, SOCIALIZE, SPAY/NEUTHER AND TREAT THEIR DOG LIKE A BELOVED MEMBER OF THEIR FAMILY.

WE NEED TO SPEND MORE MONEY ON SPAY/NEUTER PROGRAMS THAN ON EUTHANIZATION IN SHELTERS AND BREEDERS NEED TO BE MORE CONTROLLED.   BREED-NEUTRAL DANGEROUS DOG LAWS AND ANTI-DOG-FIGHTING PENALTIES NEED TO BE VERY HARSH AND TREAT ALL BREEDS THE SAME.

RESPONSIBLE OWNERS ARE THE ONES THAT ARE IMPACTED WHEN ANY FORM OF BSL IS PASSED.  BAD OWNERS DON'T LICENSE THEIR DOGS, DON'T SPAY/NEUTER, DO ABUSE, AND NEGLECT.  SO PASSING BSL DECREASES THE NUMBER OF GOOD PIT BULLS WITH GOOD OWNERS AND INCREASES BAD BREEDERS SELLING TO BAD OWNERS.

BSL DECREASES PUBLIC SAFETY AND GENERALLY HAS THE OPPOSITE EFFECT OF THE INTENDED BECAUSE THERE WILL ALWAYS BE PEOPLE WHO IGNORE LAWS.  PASS LAWS THAT WORK AND PUNISH THE GUILTY AND IRRESPONSIBLE OWNERS, NOT THE DOGS WHO HAVE NO CONTROL OVER ANYTHING IN THEIR WORLD.

Other breeds don't do this like pit bulls.  Pit bulls are responsible for 72% of all attacks on humans, and 100% of dismemberments.  These are not pets.  These are dangerous animals even in the best of hands

@grizzily Thats not how the law works.  If a dog attacks, yes the animal is generally put down.  But the owner is then on the hook to pay for any medical costs incurred and depending on the nature of the attack, usually are charged legally.  Now if the attack occurred while someone was trespassing or breaking into where the dog is kept, that changes.
