Darrell Gilyard, Pastor and Registered Sex Offender, Can Still Preach, While Kids Are Banned From Church

A Jacksonville pastor who confessed to sexual crimes against not one but two underaged girls and is a registered sex offender is still being allowed to preach at a church while children are banned from the congregation because Florida is as assed up as advertised.

Former Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church pastor Darrell Gilyard was released from the clink in December after he surrendered to cops in 2008 and admitted to committing sex crimes against two girls under the age of 16.

And now that he's back on the streets, he's found a new gig delivering sermons at Christ Tabernacle Missionary Baptist.

As pastor of Shiloh Baptist Church, Gilyard molested a 15-year-old girl and then sent a lewd text to another young girl.

And while God apparently forgives sexual acts against kids, the state does not. And so, as a registered sex offender and a person under sex offender probation until December of 2014, the Christ Tabernacle Missionary Baptist children need to be moved into a separate building while Gilyard preaches the Lord's Word.

Gilyard's assistant, Rebecca Smith, says not to worry. Kids are safe now because they're being herded into another building. Also, Gilyard's been praying. So, all is well.

Gilyard wanted to ease his way back into talking to people about Jesus with a weekly Bible study. But Smith said, no so fast.

"We've been in prayer, and I shared with him that God didn't call you to lead Bible study. God called you to preach," said Smith.

God also didn't call him to molest a young girl, but now we're just splitting hairs, amerite?

The main thing here is since Gilyard's return to the pulpit, the once-struggling Christ Tabernacle Missionary Baptist is seeing attendance on the rise, although he's not on the payroll.

For their part, the congregants have welcomed him back with open arms.

"That's what God would have us do," said congregant Lindy Brown. "He would have us to appreciate everybody for who they are, because none of us are without sin."

But not everybody is too keen on a dude who molested a kid suddenly being able to talk to others about Jesus.

The New Black Panther Party is also not too fired about the whole idea and once even protested Gilyard at the church.

"We came because the children who we should be teaching and preaching cannot come out today," said Mikhail Muhammad, the group's leader.

"The black ministers in the city of Jacksonville ought to be ashamed of themselves. How can you say you're a follower of Christ but you won't stand up and speak out against this injustice?"

"He's preaching the Lord's word," said Lindy. "He can be wherever he wants to."

Except go anywhere near the children, or talk to the children, or otherwise have any sort of communication with children. Other than that, he's golden!

Am really not able to wrap my mind around this one - it just seems messed up and seems to ostracize the children.  Don't know how this came about but it is a real betrayal of the victims (and the only victims here were the children and their families).  Shame on Florida!

This is nothing more than a church sacrificing whatever higher morality it claims to have in exchange for employing a man known for growing church attendance in the past. Talk about "selling your soul", huh?

Maybe they need an atheist to read 1st Tim 3 to them. It's pretty obvious they haven't been studying their own texts...

It's disgusting.

You know this may not be such a bad idea..Keep ALL kids out of the church so they are not brainwashed or abused.  This is a win-win!

If the Catholic Church and Boy Scouts had been as honest as this Baptist church that a certain percentage of their leaders are sex offenders, a lot of horrible things could have been avoided. The whole situation sounds insane, I agree, but at least they're not covering it up!

@Chris Joseph...

Apparently, you're not a church goin' feller, 'cause if you were, you'd know the bible is all about the raping of children.

To wit.

Murder, rape and pillage of the Midianites

Numbers 31:7-18 NLT

They attacked Midian just as the LORD had commanded Moses, and they killed all the men.  All five of the Midianite kings – Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba – died in the battle.  They also killed Balaam son of Beor with the sword.  Then the Israelite army captured the Midianite women and children and seized their cattle and flocks and all their wealth as plunder.  They burned all the towns and villages where the Midianites had lived.  After they had gathered the plunder and captives, both people and animals, they brought them all to Moses and Eleazar the priest, and to the whole community of Israel, which was camped on the plains of Moab beside the Jordan River, across from Jericho.

Moses, Eleazar the priest, and all the leaders of the people went to meet them outside the camp.  But Moses was furious with all the military commanders who had returned from the battle.  "Why have you let all the women live?" he demanded.  "These are the very ones who followed Balaam's advice and caused the people of Israel to rebel against the LORD at Mount Peor.  They are the ones who caused the plague to strike the LORD's people.  Now kill all the boys and all the women who have slept with a man.  Only the young girls who are virgins may live; you may keep them for yourselves.

If parents did a better job monitoring who their kids were with and what they were doing, we wouldn't have to persecute people such as Gilyard who is just trying to become a productive citizen.

@fl9826024 Are you insane? What's next? If people didn't carry money on them, we wouldn't have to persecute poor thieves? If women didn't look so sexy, we wouldn't have to persecute poor rapists? If people didn't go out without their flack jackets we wouldn't have to persecute poor murderers? Talk about victim blaming! Maybe he isn't trying to become a productive citizen. Maybe he is just trying to return to the profession that put him in a position of trust and gave him reasons to be trusted and alone with young girls.

@writer.rdittmar Why can't a lion lie down with the lamb? Devin Garramone, Christian Garramone, Jerome Michael Burton of Indiana. Deputy Donald Harder of NY, Joshua Lunsford; What do they all have in common?  They are people who were arrested for sex offences and NONE of them are on the sex offender registry. THEY can preach in church. The problem with persecuting REGISTERED sex offenders is that it gives a false sense of security. After all, how many people would have entrusted the care of their children with Sandusky?

@fl9826024 I'd be more willing to go along... if it was a hot chick with big tits and a value system influenced by jello shooters.

Now that's a god I could get behind (pun!).
