Synthetic Marijuana Ban Seems Like A Good Idea, Probably Won't Do Much

spice.jpg
I remember the exact moment I decided that I would never again smoke synthetic marijuana. I was in the shower watching my heart beat out of my chest.

I wasn't panicking or anxious or very stoned, just severely uncomfortable. The muscles in my face cramped tightly. A headache bore through my temples, shot toward the center of my skull, and crept behind my eyes. My carotid pulse seemed audible; THUMP THUMP, THUMP THUMP, my index and middle fingers jumping with each surge of blood that ran through my neck. I kept arching my back and trying to force a yawn in hopes of taking a deep, cleansing breath, but was overwhelmed with a sense of feeling full, like I just downed a Thanksgiving feast.

This was the culmination of an approximately four-week stretch of smoking various brands of synthetic marijuana, including K2 and Spice. During the period, I consumed 3 grams of the stuff, give or take. I was living in Chicago at the time, working an immensely stressful job that often brought on headaches that radiated through my face and seized my jaw. But this was something different.

Usually, I just smoked a joint of the real stuff to unwind. Sure, I'd get hit by the occasional burnout headache after inhaling some seed-ridden bush that was more brown than green, but in more than a decade of smoking pot I had never come close to feeling like I did in the shower. It was a palpable display of synthetic marijuana's deleterious nature.

Legal mechanisms to ban these drugs have been slow coming for myriad reasons. In March, the DEA placed an emergency ban on them, which this month resulted in a Boca Raton retailer getting hit with a $300,000 fine on conspiracy to distribute charges. He'll be sentenced later this year and could face up to 20 years in prison should the feds seek the maximum sentence.

Last week, Sunrise became the first city in Broward and only the second in the state to outright ban the sale of the stuff. It's expected that Deerfield Beach, Pompano Beach, Davie, Tamarac and other local cities will soon follow with similar bans.

All of this hubbub - scrambling politicians, stoned teens rushed to the emergency room, man hours and tax dollars squandered by the DEA to crackdown on something that's sold at gas stations -  is costly blowback from our nation's antiquated marijuana laws.

The first wave of media reports a few years back touted how synthetic marijuana appealed to veterans, parolees, and other people who have a lot to lose should bona fide THC show up on a drug test. This was a foolproof alternative to getting stoned without getting caught.

If natural marijuana was legally available, would demand for potentially dangerous knockoffs persist? Would there ever have been a market for this synthetic stuff in the first place?

It's too late to know. There's now a market clamoring for these products, and no ban or law will quell the demand.

Admittedly, I didn't make it past the third paragraph of the first article I read about the stuff before I was zipping up my coat and sprinting to the nearby bong shop to buy a bag. My connect for regular weed had recently moved, my girlfriend was out of town, and I was bored.

The first few hits were harsh. The stinging smoke tasted like it came from a piece of construction paper that was doused in tawdry perfume then lit on fire. And while the sensation of being stoned diminished quickly, it was close enough to the real thing to make me want to try it again. And again. And again.

There were headaches over the course of the month, and maybe a few respiratory issues. I chalked them up to lack of sleep and living in Chicago during the winter.

But it all coalesced that night in the shower into a perfect storm of synthetically stoned anguish.

Fortunately, I shook off the effects, brushed my teeth, and vowed to find a good old-fashioned drug dealer. I've never felt better.

I purchase wormwort over the internet which is basically like the stuff you get in these packets of herbal incense.  You smoke it and it doesn't really do much to you.  I take the packets of herbal incense which are pretty darn potent and cut them in half with the wormwort.  By cutting the product I can double or triple the amount I get for the princely sums they charge for it and it takes the edge off of the overamping effects of the herbal incense.  You have to be smart about this crap.  As for it causing health problems look at all the crap we breathe everyday and all the processed foods we eat all the time.  You drink enough pepsi in one day it will put you in the hospital or the grave.  I think fat people and politicians who want to tell us what to do and what not to do are more dangerous to our society than any of this herbal stuff.   So all of you users out there...cut the stuff with tobacco or some other types of herb.  It'll go a lot farther and the high will be way less intense!  :)

im going to be honest about the synthetic weed.   i have been smoking this stuff for over 3 years and ive never had a problem    all the crap you see on the news is bullshit and government propaganda.   i do agree that kids should not be buying this stuff and what they should do is put an age limit on it.    just like the guy in florida that was eating another mans face, they blamed it soley on synthectic stuff like bath salts, when after the tox report came back and said the individual had regular marajana in his system and not synthetic.    yes if u are a dumb ass and u smoke 3 grams in a day of course you are going to get sick      this government is so ass backward they dont even know what they are doing in washington.   just leaglize the real stuff and there wont a problem.   the problem i have is that there are millions of deaths each year because of alcohol related like drinking and driving but there has never ever been one single death ever reported because someone smoked to much weed. so once again thank you to the government for violating the constitution and our individual rights.    i take i look at countries around the world that the people have toppled their own government because of the way the government in those countries have treated their own people and have expanded the governments power   hmmmmmm       kind of sounds like whats going on in the us.    the government here in the us  has expand their power to be able to tell the people what they can and cant do and all i can say is sooner or later this will trigger an american revolution to where the people will eventually topple the american government because eventually people are going to get tired of our rights being taken away from us.

losers eh? I have been smoking it for sometime now and never attacked anyone. The herbal blend can be made simply from a couple of things at your local herbal store.NOT CHEMICALS.I dont know where U people get your info from but the k2 and spice should be illegal. It does have chemicals in it.But what we smoke is strickly made from herbal compounds not chemicals.thanks

This stuff should never be smoked. Even in moderation you can get hooked. You think everythings okay, because its legal right? But research shows that its highly addictive, and from an inside point of view the withdrawl is nasty. my boyfriend smoked in moderation, and his tolerence got higher and higher and you smoke more and more. He is now completely stopped but going through the worst withdrawl ive ever seen. This shit is not a free walk in the park to get high, and anyone who thinks its okay, i strongly suggest to believe otherwise. After a period of time it gets worse. Just stick to the real stuff, its better has less side effects, and is natural. Why put shit in your body thats not natural? That all i wanted to say. and ill tell as many people as i have too. I strongly reccomend staying as far away from this shit as possible.... seriously.

Moderation and research into  other Natural Entheogens to blend in and Medicate through Alternative SmokingBlends. Alternative Medicine combined with Self-Knowledge. That's what I do to stay on the right side of the law. The only thing wrong with that is that CityCouncils have differing opinions on what should be legal, depending on where in your state you travel..

Wow! What a terrific start! I can remember the very first Comment post that I wrote, and it was nothing like as good as this one. I use my own blog as a way of sharing my thoughts on items that catch my interest. I blog at irregular intervals. Other people update the blogs very regularly, and the subjects range from work to family.Fort Lauderdale Beach Wedding

Like he said, where is this info? If this stuff is so dangerous, why is the media not flooded with actual hard facts about what chemicals are known to be in them, and what effects (negative and positive) they have on the human body? I myself am very curious to read up on this kind of stuff, but because of the vague nature of the drug(s) composition and legality, hard facts are almost impossible to find. What the general public needs is a readily accessible database of what chemicals are known to be found in which of the hundreds of different brands, their legality state by state, and all known medical side affects. Its interesting to point out that all of this would be completely pointless were marijuana decriminalized/government regulated.

I have tried this stuff two times because I thought the first time had to be something fake.  I couldn't understand how someone could enjoy the feeling.  It made me nervous and paranoid and that mixed with me having panic issues just didnt' feel good.  Yes it gave me a little head buzz but not worth the side effects at all.  So when I tried It again it was a different brand and the same thing happened.  From personal experience I strongly believe the only reason kids are even trying this stuff is because it will not show up on a drug test and they can get away with it. No matte how much worse it is for you than just smoking a little marijuana.  The "spice" gives you a hangover too which is another thing weed doesnt do.  Why can't we just legalize marijuana?  Kids would be able to get it the same way they are able to get alcohol so it would not be sold to them plus they would be arrested for using it.  But an adult should have the right to choose to smoke a joint in his home instead of drink a beer.

The biggest problem is that there is no such thing as synthetic marijuana. What they are selling is unrelated plants. It has no cannabinoids at all nor does it do the same thing. STOP calling it marijuana.

The Truth of Spice

As a user of JWH-018 (the original, and most potent version of spice), I can say this shit shouldnt make you go crazy. It makes you trip balls, forget where you are, throw your guts up, causes holes in your lungs, ect... but crazy? Gain more self control. If you cant handle taking a substance without going insane you really need to work on yourself. Im not bragging about doing spice, it was one of the dumbest things I did as a kid. Im just being real. I smoked more then anyone should have, and it was always the extreme potent kind (Cloud 10, King Kripto extreme, Black Majic Intensity, ect). I smoked that shit like it was going out of style. Stop pretending your highs were so bad, your just fueling propaganda.  As for everyone wondering if they should use; short answer, no. Extended Answer: It is a terrible drug, that honestly isnt worth spending the outrageous prices for. You would be better getting weed. Spice is nasty, leaves poor heath effects, and smoking a mixture of plants with scent on them is nasty. You shouldn't be putting that shit into yourself. For the ones who are going to try it anyway: Dont be stupid! Its not like pot! Pack a bowl, and get one good rip. You'll feel it. When I first started (it was a different chemical, but I imagine it works the same still) the peak of the high was about 3 hits from a bowl. Dont think because you used to smoke dank by the oz that a 3g bag isnt a big deal. This shit fucks you up! Its okay to be stupid every one and a while, as long as its in good fun. Dont make it your life, dont do anything that you wouldn't normally do, and dont kill yourself or others (not cool brah).  Hope this helps someone, if not I just wasted like 15 min.

I was introduced to fake weed right before New Year's Eve. The biggest reason I smoke it's because it's easier to find, I don't have to spend all day or every day for a week looking for it. I'd much prefer the real thing, but this is Nebraska, so forget it: the motherfrakkers down in Lincoln at the Unicameral are not only backward, they're idiots: Iowa's getting set to legalize for personal use, it's 20 minutes from Omaha (right across the wide Missouri), but Nebraska's getting set to re-criminalize because some kid OD'd on fake weed a year ago. My fiance and I are moving to Alaska. Screw this.

umm there is actually scientific fact on whats in the bag and there are statistics on who has died from smoking this fake shit and who has been to the hospital. so bro do better research before post something false

I agree. I've been smoking this on and off for 2years now its all about moderation. Its not some random chemicals. Its a synthetic form of what we already put in our lungs. Chemistry doesnt always mean chemicals. Just leagalize the real deal and get over it

Benjo667

its not for losers. its for people who think legal means safe! if weed was legal we would not have any problems with fake weed. when i smoked spice it was in a powder form. crazy! i guess they put the powder on the plant matter. one hit and i felt like i was gonna die! no good:{

Jokerslounge69

seriously people wtf??? i smoke 15 grams a week of the synthetic on top of the oz of ganja i smoke every week and i've never had any problems with it... been smoking it for 5 years now... yes if you have any chemical inbalances or mental issues it can effect those but dont blame the drug.... if you hit it and went crazy then you probably need to be in the psych ward anyways... im just tired of hearing people bitch about bad effects.. if you are going to use it do your research and dont believe shit others are saying because it does not apply because the chemical structure in everyones brains are different. no one has the same chemical map or balances
