Battery Charges Filed for Jonatha Carr, FAU Student Who Threatened to Kill Teacher, Family Says

Felony charges have been filed against 24-year-old FAU student Jonatha Carr, according to her sister, in connection with her classroom outburst in which she was filmed threatening to kill a professor and classmates.

Her family spoke to the Pulp last week about Carr's long struggle with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Despite the assertion several weeks ago by an FAU Police spokesman that no charges would be filed, Nicole Carr said her mother was called earlier today and informed there was a warrant out for Jonatha's arrest.

Multiple calls to spokespeople for both Florida Atlantic University and the university police department were not answered or returned.

Carr's police report includes charges for battery and disturbance, but actual charges filed by the state attorney can differ greatly from charges police initially arrest someone for. There are no charges in Palm Beach County online court filings, and a call to the Palm Beach State Attorney's Office was not returned.

Nicole Carr said she and her family were being cautious in proceeding, and were not sure if Jonatha would turn herself in today.

"We're just trying to talk to a lawyer to see what the best thing would be," Nicole said.

Jonatha was in a precarious mental state last week when her sister and mother spoke to the Pulp; they characterized her March 20 outburst in a biology class as a "break" associated with her mental illness. They said she had been doing well with medication and group therapy and had never had a public break before.

When she did, however, classmates ended up filming her yelling things like "I will kill the fuck out of you" and hitting a man the University Press has identified as instructor Justin White. White and another FAU employee eventually pulled her out of the classroom and held her down until police arrived.

When that happened, according to the police report, she hit one officer in the chest and continued yelling threats and racial slurs; she resisted detention aggressively enough that police reported it was necessary to taser her three times on the way to a hospital.

The university served her a temporary suspension while she was in the mental health facility, her mother said. There was a meeting with campus authorities on Monday in which her sister said nothing final was decided. FAU has declined to discuss the case in the past weeks because of federal and state privacy regulations.

But, Nicole said, the university's intentions at the meeting, and in scheduling another for next week, were clear:

"It looked to us," she said, "like they were moving to expell her."

Jonatha's mother, Joyce Carr, said last week that she didn't hold it against the university that it was trying to "protect the campus."

"If Jonatha never finishes her biology degree at FAU, we accept that," she said. "Jonatha suffers with mental illness. Not as an excuse, but that's the situation."

If she's this volatile while on her medication, she has no business in a highly structured environment like a college campus. Things could have turned out very differently had she taken a gun or a knife to class that day. Luckily it didn't turn into another Columbine or Virginia Tech incident. She needs psychiatric care first, then jail time for her criminal actions.

What a coincidence that 2 1/2 weeks after Carr's meltdown, president Obama spoke at Florida Atlantic University (yesterday), renewing class warfare and introducing the Buffet Rule to America.Similarly, Carr was apparently interviewed by CBS12 West Palm Beach about Trayvon Martin prior to her death threats to the teacher and classmates, and her assault on the others. The fire the enemymedia started spread quickly.Carr's is a hate crime, mental illness or not.  If it was her mental illness talking, it wouldn't repeat #Occupy Wall Street mantras.  It would be, "the walls have eyes and are watching Charles Darwin and me debate the origin of life while my professor is planning how to kill me with microwaves through the TV."  Threatening to kill anyone or assaulting anyone is a crime, no matter what.  No matter what the truth is, the media always tell us that the killers on college campuses have mental illness, so she must be isolated from people to avoid the next story she's in: Gunman opens fire in biology class. How did this happen?

That is not true. If you were familiar with mental disorders then you would know they manifest in different ways. Not everyone has outbreaks that are displayed like what is displayed on TV. You should probably do some research on the manner before making such a comment.

Complain to the media for their characterizations of the people who open fire in the classrooms of America. Are you saying that she is not capable of making good on her threats?  I'm still wondering if it isn't possession, it was so bad. But being fair, you and I know that mental illness often presents with paranoia and/ or with personal delusions of greater significance or intelligence than is really the case.  My ficticious quote exists to illustrate what I believe is the difference between actual paranoia with an original delusion, and the #Occupy and disruptive political mantras and platitudes all over media which seemed to be what she was talking about.  Worse, she sounds like a Black Panther. Listen to them talk their hate, there's little difference. If she understands that killing Trayvon Martin is wrong, then she also understands that threatening to kill people and assaulting people is wrong.  She's competent and she has committed hate crimes. I'm NOT claiming that Barack Obama's PR team sent her there -- I am claiming that she was doing an #Occupy in Bio class.

I've never heard of Florida Atlantic before, and all of a sudden there it is on the national stage for three unrelated events: Jonatha Carr, Obama's class war speech which was organized well in advance, and the Muslim Students who "evicted" their Jewish classmates. All happening within the same two or so weeks......

I'm glad we have qualified mental professionals to help to decide these cases instead of you. You are obviously fueled by a political agenda, so your complete disregard for scientific fact is unsurprising.

Ouch.  Looking at this through what happened at the nursing school in CA, it really isn't a stretch of the imagination that she would return with a gun next time.

A nut ball is going to be processed by the system.  Neither one of them is going to be happy with the result, but the quack shrinks are going to get very well paid.

Why is it that we are one of the only industrialized nations in the world that jails their mentally ailing citizens? Might as well throw all of those fighting addictions into jail too! I mean who needs counseling? Who needs therapy? Jail is the solution that provides the best results!

Right, however people like this are DANGEROUS, not to mention she absorbed her racism from the views of her very own family.
