Jonatha Carr's FAU Outburst Had Nothing to Do With Trayvon Martin Discussion; Sorry, Huffington Post

Trayvon Martin: Connected to this blog post by not being connected to several other blog posts.
Update, 3/30: Carr's family has commented about her history of mental illness.

Dr. Boyce Watkins has been actively involved in racial commentary for a long time. He's been on CNN, he's written books, he runs a constantly updated website called Your Black World. That, combined with his status as a "scholar in residence" at Syracuse University, lends a lot of credibility to his column that the Huffington Post published Monday under the headline "Student Becomes Violent Over Trayvon Martin: Why This Is a Warning Sign to All of Us."

Unfortunately, the initial premise of the column is... wrong.

Almost certainly not an intentional lie, but certainly a fact that more than 15 seconds of digging would have shot down. Watkins, whose website declares him "the people's scholar," says Jonatha Carr, the FAU student who threatened to kill her teacher and hit a man during a class last week, "became violent in class during a discussion on the death of the late Trayvon Martin." He then spends 500-plus words explaining how Carr's outburst is indicative of a larger anger felt by African-Americans.

But, according to the professor teaching the evolution class, "a discussion on the death of the late Trayvon Martin" isn't even close to what happened.

"We did not mention anything about Trayvon Martin in class," Professor Stephen Kajiura said yesterday. "We were talking about sexual selection in peacocks."

Ah. Well, that's close enough, right?

Kajiura said he had just explained a tendency for female peacocks to pick mates with longer tail feathers when Carr asked "something to the effect of, 'Does evolution kill all people, or just black people?'"

"As I said, we discussed nothing of the sort, so I was a little confused by the question," Kajiura said.

I was likewise confused by the connection between Carr and Martin and why Watkins showed so little of his work when writing, "Punishing Jonatha without pursuing justice against the man who killed Trayvon Martin is yet another reminder of the polite oppression we've been forced to endure for the last 400 years... It's time for something to change, and it's time for that change to come by any means necessary."

Watkins did respond to an email request for comment but didn't say where he got the information about a class discussion.

"The reason I drew the connection with the case in Florida is because it was reported to me by my editors at news one that the day before the incident took place she was interviewed about the shooting," Watkins wrote in a email to the Pulp.

Carr was interviewed by CBS 12, but that's a lot different from a student freaking out during a class discussion about the case -- which is what Watkins said happened in the column.

"I don't think it's a stretch to connect her anger about racism to the standard anger that many African-Americans feel about racism in America which led them to respond the way they did to the shooting," Watkins said.

"Anger about racism"? Check out the video -- or better yet, the police report. There's no discernible mention of Trayvon Martin but plenty of references to phrases like "I will kill the fuck out of you" and "Jewish people who think this world is theirs which it's not, I will fucking kill you at the Holocaust events all over the world." Does it sound like anger about racism to you?

HuffPo (and NewsOne), I know "Trayvon Martin" is Google-search gold right now. As, in South Florida, is "Jonatha Carr." Hell, I put them both in the headline of this blog post because that's what people are searching for. But who's being helped by drawing conclusions under false pretenses?

I haven't drawn any conclusion about the Martin case, but I have drawn conclusions about another case.. The case of blacks tearing whites down with racism claims. Can't count the vigilante justice posts I have read condoning violence or killing white people..  This comes as no surprise, as blacks and violence go hand and hand nowadays..  They blame whites for all their troubles.  They claim racism if it will help them get their way, or if they are not getting their way..  Whites are going to become sick of it, and the grandstanding could backfire on Liberals if they are not careful.. I do not affiliate with either party, and have been critical of FOX news for their Conservative propaganda in the past, but the liberal media has been just as bad with this case.  I don't trust anyone anymore.

Most of the people that were witnessed committing burglary and other criminal acts in Zimmermans neighborhood were black.  Profiling sucks for blacks that have no intent of committing a crime, but the blame should be put on the real reason blacks are profiled..  Blacks commit crime at an alarming rate.  They need to blame the real reason for profiling, not whites..

93% of all murdered black males are murdered by other black males..

90% of all violent interracial crimes are committed by blacks against whites..

Blacks males make up 35-40% of sexual assaults on white women..Jesse and Al jump at the chance to defend black women accusing white males ofrape, when in actuality, white on black sexual assault is virtually nonexistent.

In 2005 out of 36,000 sexual assaults against black women, almost all were black men, and less than "10" were from white men.. Yes, that is "10" and not 10%... 37,000 white women were sexually assaulted by black men that same year.. WHO IS TO BLAME???

Is Racism the reason blacks make up half the prison population, but only 13% of the total population?  The black prison population would be higher if so many black murderers hadn't killed other black murderers!!

the blame game is getting old.  tired of seeing blacks resist arrest and then claim police brutality..  instigate and act aggressive and thencry when their aggression is met with aggression.  at some point you are going to have to look inward to fix your problems, and stop blamingeveryone else!!

People of all colors have come here in the last 40years(with nothing) and become successful, without the help of affirmative action..  They put their nose to the grindstone and get itdone.

Blacks idea of Racism is never going away, because they wont let it.  They thrive off of conflict.

If it her outburst had nothing to with Trayvon, then why did Ms. Carr mention Trayvon?

Well, she didn't carry it out like we've seen with all those other White kids who killed innocent people. She even expressed how she was feeling, so that the proper authorities could get intervene and get her the help she needed.  One can only take so much.  All the hatred and racist attitudes and hateful conduct among different racial groups needs to stop. Blacks sterotype Whites just as Whites stereotype Blacks.  But I think White people are by far worse than Blacks because they hide their hand, and Blacks express themselves openly about how they feel. Bottom line is, there's too much negativity in the U.S.A. and it's making our nation a hell hole. Right now Blacks are in protection mode for their kids like a lioness protecting her cubs. Black kids all over this country are hurting as they wait to see how the Trayvon case will be handled.  It's a stressful time for our young people. There's so much to be said, but it makes me want to vomit thinking about it all.  Only God can avenge the poor, the downtrodden, and the innocent.  As for me and mine, we will trust in God's justice. It will surely come.

thank you for addressing this. i read his article previously and all i could think of was, for someone denouncing racism he sure has a penchant for perpetuating it, regardless of facts. perhaps the good dr. wants attention brought to his own agenda, by any means necessary, of course.

Sadly, it appeared to be Jonatha who injected Trayvon into her violent rant, perhaps leading to the confusing connection.  Hopefully she will get the counseling/ mental health help she needs.

Another excellent article, Rich.

Gawd, what embarrassment for Dr. Boyce Watkins' reputation.

Personally I have learned the pacifist approach best: waiting until all the facts come in before judging, but in journalism, one must sift with great care.

i don't think anyone is debating that trayvon martin may have been on her mind. the point that is being debated is that the author of the original article said that "during a discussion about trayvon martin", which never happened in that class. if it had been an open discussion about trayvon martin, SOME of her behavior may be excusable, a very small amount of it. this was a class having a discussion about the mating patterns of peacocks, in which reference to trayvon has no place. the point is that the original author slanted the story to make miss carr appear more identifiable and admirable, instead of the lunatic that she is. if she's heated up about trayvon, you might admire her. if you know that she just went bat-shit crazy regarding a discussion on peacocks, you might know that she, in no way, should be considered a martyr.

"she even expressed how she was feeling, so that the proper authorities could intervene and get her te help she needed"......wow. are you high? she didn't express anything, she went fucking crazy. expressing yourself is when you go to a college counselor and tell them you are about to lose your shit, not when you threathen a classroom of 30 something people. second, get the help she needed? she was tased three times because she wouldn't accept the "help" she needed. she fought every cop and every orderly once admitted to south county hospital. don't play devil's advocate for her. don't act like this girl should be respected for these actions, or you are just as bad as she is. get the help she needed. yeah, being baker acted against your will is really seeking the help you needed. get real.

When did she do that? Sadly, I'm not sure you got the point of this article.

Fat Hand, Jonatha did say for every Trayvon Martin killed she will 10,000 white mf's.. And... she WAS interviewed about the bus trip she was planning the day before she snapped. I just watched the video to make sure that those facts were correct. For her to be taking that class she was probably a Biology student with most likely the goals of going on to graduate school. Clearly an intelligent person. Intelligent people don't just go off like that unless something is wrong with them. And for someone to say that Dr. Watson is perpetuating racism by bringing up an issue that clearly has not been resolved in this country is like an ostrich sticking its head in the sand. Don't get me wrong though, I believe she needs to suffer the consequences of her actions. No matter how we feel inside.. it doesn't give us the right to lash out at another human being.

spinning a report by adding a racist slant to "sell" your article is certainly perpetuating and profiting off racism. had dr watson no taking this slant, no one would be reading his article. the dr said that this was an evolution class. not the case, it was bio. perhaps a questions like "how does evolution kill black people?" would have had a place in an evolution class, not in a biology class. second, the dr said "during a discussion about trayvon martin". that never happened, therefore, this is either terribly flawed journalism on the dr's part, or an attempt to lure you into thinking that her reaction was warranted and not out of place. therefore, making her racist rant  acceptable. had this been a discussion on trayvon martin, then watching her freak out like that may have been a bit more understandable. i don't see how someone viewing it this way is the equivalent to an ostrich with its head in the sand, i can't see what the point of that statement is. if you are attempting to imply that i'm closed off the "real world", you're making some pretty heavy assumptions. my point is that this woman went on a racist rant about killing people of other races, and the doctor bascially glorifies her and places her above the laws of common deceny by saying she's upset about the way black people are treated in this country. he attempts to make a martyr out of her, and its sickening. its been said thousands of times already, but if this would have been a white man that went off like this, you'd be calling for his head, and no white journalist would say "this is an understandable reaction". could you imagine the uproar if a white journalist then said that whites need to accept that its "time for a change, by any means necessary"? if this was a person of islam that got up and spoke about killing whites, he'd already be dead. if you think i'm off base there, perhaps you're the one with his head in the sand. so instead of trying to put lipstick on the pig that is jonatha carr, your dr watson perhaps should have reported what we all saw, a girl with some serious issues freaking out in the most inappropriate of times and places, with no provocation what so ever, and a woman that should be punished like anyone else would be, and not be allotted a free pass due to her skin color.

Did she? I didn't hear that, but it is tough to watch that whole video.
