Scott Wilson, 23, was left to drown after the crash.
A Palm Beach County jury this afternoon found Wellington polo mogul John Goodman guilty of DUI manslaughter, failure to render aid, and vehicular homicide. The conviction comes two years after Goodman sped through a stop sign in Wellington, causing a car crash that killed 23-year-old Scott Wilson. (Read our feature story about the accident here.)

Multimillionaire Goodman prayed, hands clasped together before his head, right before the jury reentered the courtroom. He's still in court at the moment, as the lawyers are discussing the presentencing schedule.

Update: Goodman is about to be taken into custody, facing a possible 30 years in prison.

Update #2
: Lili Wilson, Scott's mother, was in tears after the verdict. "Justice has been served," she said. "It's time for the healing process to begin."

Update #3: Not surprisingly, Goodman is going to appeal. His lawyer, famed defense attorney Roy Black, just issued this statement:
"It is our belief that multiple errors were committed during and before the trial that, in effect, denied our client's ability to get a fair trial. We intend to file an appeal so that our client can receive the just and fair proceeding to which he is entitled by law."

Prosecutor Ellen Roberts today called the defense's explanations for the crash "preposterous."

The defense team argued that Goodman's Bentley malfunctioned when he tried to stop at the stop sign and that the polo mogul was not drunk at the time of the crash but got wasted by drinking a bottle of liquor afterward, in a friend's barn.

Goodman testified that he did not see Wilson's car in a drainage ditch when he walked away from the scene of the crash. "I felt like I had stayed and assessed the scene and looked around and I didn't see anybody or anything," he said.

How do we get our arms around the idea the double killer Ryan LeVin with 50 pages of previous priors gets house arrest in a luxury condo, and Goodman with no priors, get 15-30 years.  That's right now.  LeVin is a crazy SOB and he should be locked up for life.  Right now he's here working out in the gym, has a personal trainer, girlfriend, living large, a lifestyle no decent hard-working person could ever experience.  Bogenschutz threatened the victims families by saying take this or you won't get anything (according to Ryan)  Bogie had their backs against the wall, and no appeal to no jail time should  have even been entertained..  Barbara McCarthy will be exposed on the June 4th depositions where Rothstein's going to spill the beans on the judicial system and law enforcement.  I believe you will see that she is one of the judges Rothstein was paying off.  If we can find out that she took bribes on the bench, can we retry the LeVin case??

Roy Black joined Arthur Fonzarelli with that asinine defense he presented during the trial.

Roy jumped the shark.

There are two big winers in this case (both underserved, how amazing!)  It's Roy Black and the newly adopted daughter/girlfriend. Everybody else loses, except for Ellen Roberts who had a deserved career victory.

There is another case that demonstrates the same priviledged mentality...Edward Kennedy and the Chappaquiddik incident where Ms. Kopeckne was left to drown while the rich guy protected his reputation.

I guess Palm Beach prosecutors are better at their jobs than the Fort Lauderdale prosecutors who incompetently prosecuted Jim Leyritz. I still can't get over what went on at that trial. But this seems like a correct verdict.

hope goodman is given at least 20 years without the chance of early release.  i still think that is getting off light based on the circumtances of how he casued the death of the young man he killed.  just to think that this coward let the victim remain trapped in the car for over an hour until he drowned...it does not get any more cold blooded and callous than that.  what kind of pathetic values did goodmans parents teach this rich spoiled man-child other than the financial one of a huge inhertiance. certainly not the the one of valuing other human beings other than himself.

And John Goodman's attorney Roy Black represented Kennedy's nephew, William Kennedy Smith a decade later.

Just curious: Why do you say 20 years, as opposed to more or less?
