Teen Suspects in Fire Attack on Michael Brewer Sentenced to Decades of Jail and Probation

In October 2009, 15-year-old Michael Brewer was set on fire by classmates who were mad that he'd called police about a bike theft. Yesterday, two of those accused pleaded no contest to charges of second-degree attempted murder, according to the Sun-Sentinel, and will be dealing with the Florida justice system for a long, long time.
Jesus Mendez, now 18 years old, was sentenced to 11 years in prison, a year of community control, and 18 years of probation, while his alleged accomplice, 17-year-old Denver Jarvis, got eight years in prison, a year of community control, and a whopping 21 years of probation.
The third defendant, however...
... bailed on what Judge Michael Robinson was told would be a third no-contest plea. Seventeen-year-old Michael Bent, who prosecutors say was the one who stole the bike and commanded Jarvis to dump the flammable liquid, apparently changed his mind and said he'd rather go to trial.
The three were originally offered a plea deal in October that included more prison time: 15 years for Mendez, who allegedly actually set Brewer on fire, and ten years for Bent and Jarvis, with ten years of probation for everybody. After what Mendez's attorney called a "misunderstanding," all three rejected the deal.
Jury selection for Bent's trial starts March 12.
