Occupy Fort Lauderdale: The Pool Party (BYOB)

If Occupy does it right, what its party could look like next weekend.
Now there's a cause your average Fort Lauderdale resident can get behind -- a pool party.

What seems to be the inaugural Occupy Fort Lauderdale pool party is scheduled for January 28, which could actually be the first Occupy pool party in the nation.

Who says Occupy Fort Lauderdale isn't being innovative?

Technically, Occupy Tampa had an event in October with the title of "pool party" -- but that was no pool.

According to Occupy Tampa, that was just an event to wear a bathing suit and run through the fountains at a local park -- clearly not a pool party.

And according to Google Maps, there's actually a pool at the address of the Occupy Fort Lauderdale pool party.

The event is also billed as a barbecue and fundraiser, with a suggested donation of $5.

As mentioned in the headline, it's BYOB, so pack the flask before heading out.

Meanwhile, the occupiers are doing things other than pool parties -- they're having a rally between the Broward courthouse and the federal bankruptcy court today, they're currently discussing whether the group should join the Pro-Choice Coalition of Broward, and as always, they're planning the meeting for Sunday.

However, there's also a pool party.

Wow, this seems fun! :D I haven't been to a pool party for quite a long time. I love the life and the activity of pool parties, and the event being a fundraiser actually gives it even more= significance. That's definitely an event worth attending!

Thanks Matt for mentioning Occupy Fort Lauderdale. The pool party is the first of what is planned to be a number of events that are more like a rally than a demonstration. The idea is to build solidarity amongst the members and also to reach out to the community and build membership in ways that have proven effective in other social movements. If all goes according to current plans you'll be seeing more rally type social events.

Dear Mr. Hendley,  As the host of the Occupy BBQ/Pool Party, I invite you to attend our event.. join us, bring your bathing suit and you will experience what a fun loving group of wild and crazy anarchists we really are. We welcome all--seasoned Occupiers, would be Occupiers, disillusioned Tea Partiers and any other inquisitive members of the 99%.  Parking is limited so the 1 Percenters considering attending are encouraged to be dropped off by the chauffeur.  See you poolside!

No discussion of joining the pro-life coalition. Come on man get your story straight. Someone suggested that we endorse the Pro-choice coalition but we decided that this is not our issue and takes away from our message. Curious, what this does to support the occupy cause is to give all of us that work so very hard a break to enjoy ourselves instead of meeting and marches all the time. We need to have fun some time!!

I give the reporter credit for finding a story and investigating facts, and for his masterful use of google earth to determine that there is an actual pool at the pool party. But why doesn't he report what today's protest was actually about? Why doesn't he note the successes that they have had helping families avert final eviction notices following unjust foreclosures. Or report on  the Teach-In they are hosting at St Maurices Church next Thursday January 26th at 7pm? That they have allied with some foreclosure fraud advocacy orginizations to help fight the unjust practices your that government backs. Or that they are occupying foreclosure courtrooms for a first hand accounting of the alledged rubber stamping. With the Pro-Life comment he added, all I can say is, Mr. Handley certainly knows how to write a credible story. Do you think he gets paid to write stories like this? If so, I would say there must be an unemployed reporter  that should submit his resume.

Ummmm.......

" they're having a rally between the Broward courthouse and the federal bankruptcy court today, they're currently discussing whether the group should join the Pro-Life Coalition of Broward"

Why would OWS hook up with any Pro Life ( anti choice / anti abortionists/ anti birth control/ anti women's rights) group?

Does this event actually do anything to support the occupy causes?

Yes it gives us working so hard on meetings and demonstrations time to relax and enjoy ourselves.  Community Building
