Occupy Member Arrested in Boca Raton Has a Bit of a History Doing Publicity Stunts

For one of the three Occupy protesters arrested yesterday in Boca Raton, this is at least her fourth publicity stunt involving police -- one of those incidents involving her wearing clown makeup and having to be forcibly removed from a tree.

That's 31-year-old Ana Rodriguez who was hit with charges of resisting a police officer without violence, obstructing a highway, and violating a municipal ordinance yesterday -- along with her two pals -- while lying in the middle of the street protesting the GAIM USA conference.

Rodriguez, according to the environmentalist publication she's listed as the editor of, is "a member of the Night Heron Grassroots Activist Center, organizer with Everglades Earth First! and the Palm Beach County Environmental Coalition, and Coalition for Immigrants Rights."

According to a 2009 Palm Beach Post story, Rodriguez was arrested at Lake Worth City Hall for jumping up and yelling in the face of newly elected commissioner in the middle of proceedings, shouting about his stance on immigration.

Sure enough, a sheriff's deputy was there to cuff her and cite her for disturbing a public assembly.

Earth First!
Publicity stunt number one.

Then there was her stunt on April Fool's Day last year, in which she hopped up into a tree -- in full clown getup -- outside Palm Beach Gardens City Hall.

Video of the event shows police taking a ride on the cherry picker to get her out of the tree, as she was led off in handcuffs.

Earth First!
Publicity stunt number two.

Next was an attempted protest of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio while he was giving a speech in Orlando in November, when she had to be dragged outside by people who actually wanted to listen to the self-proclaimed "America's toughest sheriff."

Then there was yesterday's run-in with law enforcement, as she was in some sort of triangle formation with two other people right in the middle of the Camino Real Bridge before being hauled off to get her picture taken at the Palm Beach County Jail.

Occupy Miami
Publicity stunt number four.

According to the Occupy Miami Facebook page, the three people arrested were part of the Occupy Miami and Occupy West Palm Beach groups.

Har, har.  Ana is merely a publicity hound.  So far she is bravely fighting for the following: - Hate Sheriff Arpaio - Hate people who earn more money than she thinks they should have - Hate people who want to build improvements on their property - Hate people who think we should have immigration laws

Clown makeup is exactly perfect for her.

hey FQs9000 (aka- robot with no face)

you seem to have no understanding of the vast amount of dedication this person has invested in helping the lives of others... whether it be personal friends, members of the community unknown to her, the homeless, migrant workers treated as slave labors, civil, local, and environmental exploitation...  Ana has continuously raised the banner of awareness and took personal sacrifice that was needed for the improvement of other peoples lives...

for instance the continual pollution of the aquifer that you drink water from... while FPL illegally builds another power plant that will pump its sewage back underground to said aquifer, while FPL wont let scientists into the oldest forests in florida because they are draining it dead!

i guess these issues are not serious enough for you robot with no face... or maybe you hide behind your robot body so no one knows you are reading about the karsashians and jersey shore

I don't know about those other stunts, but I do agree with protesting Sheriff Joe Arpaio!

And these are just some of the ways people have been forced to endanger themselves through in order for people to hear the cries for an open dialogue from these corporate moguls that keep anyone with conflicting intrests far away from the property/legislative process... wasting the tax dollars and local policeforces time just to silence peoples voices

Love you, Ana... I'll be the first to admit I will film it happening and participate in rallies and even speak up, but to get arrested takes real guts.  You are an inspiration!

Wow! I'm ashamed of New Times for writing and creating an article like this. New Times is surely not the alternative press it is supposed to be. This girl and her friends could care less about publicity. They don't care if they are in a book or not. They care about the rights of people and the protection of our planet. They are trying to get the word out so people are aware of what goes on right under our noses. Thanks to them for willing to get arrested and sacrifice themselves in the name of the rights of the people. (reminds me of Jesus) New Times should support people like this in a positive light and help by giving some explanations to why they were there and what they are trying to tell the people who may be watching the news or reading an article like this. Try interviewing Ana and her fellow peace makers and take a stance to make a difference. I guess New Times cares more about their advertising $$$$ coming in then helping the planet and the people. PEOPLE, Start following Ana, not for the drama but to be informed of The Truth!

Typical left wing nut job.  All she can do is act like a fool and a clown.  She merely wants attention for herself.  She can't be bothered to do something actually constructive.  She is merely a preening, howling bitch.

What she needs is for the judge to give her 90 days in the cooler.  She won't find that all that much fun.

After bringing attention to herself, Ana speaks for many people whose voices are unfortunately not given the luxury of a podium or the news coverage they deserve.  (which are most often venues for genuine clowns)  I'm proud of her strength in knowing the importance of the GAIM conference and showing her opposition to it.  This article should have further discussed the issues behind the acts, and in its failure to do so it slightly skews the spirit of protest which we are lucky to have active in our community.

FQS9000

90 days in jail is exactly the podium she deserves.  Whining is not a brave or courageous act, except to a bitch.

So true!  Lock up all the 'bitches' that exercise their right to free speech!  Civil disobedience is a HORRIBLE thing, and wasn't practiced at all in our nations history as a whole.

Those damn colonist 'bitches' that took part in the Boston Tea Party sure were horrible people.

...Quit your bitching.

i find your perpetuation of rape culture through your sexist and malicious usage of the word bitch to be quite disturbing as do I find it vile that you oppose a brave woman who has dedicated her life to her community through various projects and fights back against those who get in her way.

You make yourself look like a self righteous moron more and more ever time you speak.

And, your use of "bitch" just showcases it.

And how constructive are you, you're commenting on news articles online, with persistency.

Now that wasn't very nice.  Nor very constructive.

its absolutely not true... sad that people think the only thing that is productive is to make money... what ever happened to improving quality of life

Stunts? I hardly see how standing up against racism and environmental destruction are anything less than heroic. Thank you, Ana, for putting yourself at risk in order to fight for issues  that effect our communities and natural environment. And thank you, Mr. Hendley, for highlighting Ana's courageous efforts. However, your spin on the story really sucks.

It doesn't say anything about this person standing up against racism in the article.

Brian Mulligan

It does, but it doesn't explain it to the reader... it doesn't explain the reasons behind any of the protesting.... it doesnt explain that "amerikkas toughest sheriff" only got that name for being very tough against peoples civil liberties... people with tanned skin that is...

Xaviera

Yes, I am  sure all she is thinking when protesting against deforestation or corporate greed is: ¨Matthew Hendley will ¨impartially¨ be writting about me and Ill be on the news, lets do this, lets get arrested!¨.Each and every person has the right to support their beliefs and PROTEST the best way they consider.
