Carl Pelini -- the former defensive coordinator and defensive line coach at Nebraska -- is officially the new head coach of the Florida Atlantic University Owls.

Replacing the retiring Howard Schnellenberger, Pelini signed a five-year contract that starts with a $450,000 base salary.

Pelini becomes the second coach in the history of FAU football, since Schnellenberger was at the helm since the team was founded as an NCAA Division I-AA squad in 2001.

Now Pelini, 46, is taking over.

He's the older brother of Nebraska's head coach, Bo Pelini, and started his college coaching career as a graduate assistant in Lincoln in 2003.

Pelini took a gig as defensive coordinator at Minnesota State University, Mankato, in 2004, and then went over to Ohio University in 2005 to take a spot as the team's defensive-line coach, which he did until going back to Nebraska in 2008.

Nebraska went to a bowl game every year Melini ran the defense, including a 33-0 ass-kicking of the University of Arizona in the 2009 Holiday Bowl.

Now we'll have to wait a while to see how he does taking over the Owls, who went 1-10 this year, and will be going to a bowl game only if they fork over the money to watch from the stands.

Pelini's contract -- which can be found here -- includes incentives for ticket sales, bowl appearances, conference titles, and academic benchmarks.
