John Rodstrom Becomes New Broward Mayor; Kristin Jacobs Gets the Upgrade to Vice Mayor

Kristin Jacobs' path to becoming the new vice mayor wasn't exactly a shoe-in. She was nominated by Commissioner Lois Wexler, and Commissioner Ilene Lieberman then nominated Commissioner Barbara Sharief for the spot.
Jacobs won a 5-4 vote among the commissioners, with Dale Holness, Chip LaMarca, Wexler, Rodstrom, and Jacobs herself voting in her favor.
Commissioners Stacy Ritter, Sharief, Gunzburger, and Lieberman opted for Sharief.
Broward Beat has some of the backstory on that drama.
Rodstrom was first elected to the commission in 1992 and had been serving as vice mayor for the past year. Jacobs, who's been around since 1998, served as mayor back in 2005.
In then-Mayor Gunzburger's State of the County address, she highlighted property-tax reductions as well as how threatened reductions in mass transportation, human services, and the county's libraries were able to be avoided.
She also noted that the commission was able to pass its pill-mill ordinance, a bong ban for youngsters, a new ethics ordinance, and a requirement that county contractors give employees health insurance benefits to domestic partners in the same way they'd give it to spouses.
After votes for the new mayor and vice mayor, the commission meeting resumed boring everyone to tears.
Gunzburger now goes back to her role as commissioner for District 6.
