Animal-Rights Activists Trying to Ban Circus in Margate for Messin' With Elephants

A circus in Margate is probably the most exciting thing to happen in that city for a while, but animal-rights activists plan on showing up to the city's commission meeting tonight to ask them to ban the Cole Brothers Circus from Margate.

Why? Cole Brothers seems to have a problem with elephants.

Over the years, the USDA has claimed the circus' elephants have been beaten up, mishandled, illegally sold, and even escaped from handlers.

Let's start off with this:

That was a tutorial on how to beat the hell out of elephants, which apparently doesn't sit well with the people showing up to the commission meeting tonight.

One animal-rights group has compiled a list of charges against Cole Brothers that is a bit lengthy.

Animal lovers have been trying to persuade the city to ban the circus prior to tonight's meeting, which hasn't worked out too well.

Here's an email that notable sea-turtle advocate Ana Campos says is a response from Margate Mayor Pam Donovan to one of the anti-circus folks, which includes an awkward reference to nationalities:

Dear Mr Wise,

Thank you for your letter of concern. I do not agree with the cruelty to animals
as much of the world does not. Margate cannot regulate every wrong thing in the
world or we would not allow anything in our city. People do not like carnivals,
pit bulls, other nationalities, and just about everything else you can think of.
We have regulatory agencies that are suppose to stop the cruelty to animals. You
should address them instead of having cities ban circuses. They can close them
down and the problem would be solved.

Again thank you for your concern, but I will not ban the circus in the City of
Margate.

Thank you
Pam Donovan
Mayor City of Margate

Yep. First you ban the circuses, and it's a slippery slope to banning foreign people.

Of course, someone also found the 2001 newspaper article of the circus' employees (it's gone under a few name changes) sodomizing a teenaged boy. Irrelevant, but certainly doesn't help promote a circus.

We're told citizens of the area and members of the Animal Rights Foundation of Florida (ARFF) will say their piece before the commission. The meeting starts at 6 p.m. if you want to watch it go down.
