The mayor and the angry mob.
Broward County Mayor Sue Gunzburger -- without any great objection from her fellow commissioners -- has issued a proclamation declaring this Saturday "Occupy Fort Lauderdale Day" and "encourag[ing] all Broward residents to work together to bring about a stronger, better, and fairer America for our future generations."

Gunzburger had previously visited the Occupy-in-exile camp at Equality Park in Wilton Manors before the group there was booted after a day for insurance issues. On her Facebook page, she wrote:

Meeting with some of the organizational team of the Occupy Fort Lauderdale group, at their new base camp in Equality Park, Wilton Manors. As Broward County Mayor, I wanted to express my support for the important "Occupy Wall Street" fight...

Read the proclamation after the jump.

On the Occupy Fort Lauderdale Facebook page, members of the movement were happy to have the mayor's support. Others, though, were skeptical of the official endorsement.

"It's the same tactic the police use when they pretend to be your friend to make you docile," writes "Jo Du."

"I guess they think that making Saturday an 'official day' that the people will have their 'official' demonstration and then go back to their ordinary lives. We no longer have our ordinary lives," writes Scott Hotchkiss.

A peaceful rally, of course, is planned for Saturday. If Mayor Gunzburger is in attendance, railing against the injustices of the big banks, we'll let you know.

How can she support the "movement" and how can the "movement" accept this proclamation? My understanding is that the occupy jamokes are against capitalism and corporate involvement in our government. Sue, as a successful entrepreneur, that accepts hunderds of thousands in campaign contributions from huge lobbying interests (just bernie and alan and keith are good for 100 grand) is the personification of what the occupy "movement" is protesting.

To the skeptics:This a small victory involving a very courageous politician named Sue Gunzburger, please do not alienate people such as this. Of course this proclamation does not fix the problems, it does however give us deeper and broader roots of credibilty. If some you think we are going to see change immediately, you may as well quit. The strong will carry on for you.  It took a long time and a lot of corporate effort to get us into this mess. It will require every root of support we can gain to hold us strong for a very long time.

Now, now...Its only a "Citizenship" award, They gave us a day and I say we take it! LITERALLY, Occupy because they said it was our day, they are inviting us to sleep there. Don't believe everything you read or hear about us, go yourself and participate in Democracy, no not Democrat-ism.

Good for you, Sue Gunzburger! I believe that she has the best of intentions with her proclamation, so too bad for the naysayers on that Facebook page.

No such thing as bad press. Thank you Sue and Stefen.

Ol' Ray can gripe about the Occupy Fort Lauderdale group being "co-opted" because they have been kicked out of two parks by the government, have a handful of politicians supporting then, but still cannot yet establish a permanent base camp.  Yet is is Occupy Miami that has established its base camp with the CONSENT of the MIAMI-DADE COUNTY GOVERNMENT.  See: http://www.miamiherald.com/201... (“As long as they abide by the law they can remain there,” said Suzy Trutie, spokeswoman for Miami-Dade County.)  My my reading, it would seem it should be called "Occupy Miami, sponsored by the Miami-Dade County Commission."  So ...... which group has been co-opted, Ray?

Just what we need the dem's taking over and giving us that SOS they did in 2008, the SOS. I had the feeling at last weeks rally and march that this group was co-opted, now we know by who. They will try to use the occupy movement the same way the Rep. use the T-Party. at Wed night GA they keep hitting Dem. talking points, "we are not Hippies" and "we are not anti-capitalist". But some of us are, and, many of us think the Dem's and Obama sold us out. It's time that those real grass roots activest realize Ron Gunzburger and his mother are doing what ever they can to keep this a clean and orderly movment. As well as out of sight of the 1% who are realy running Fort Lauderdale and Broward county. Having Ron as the go- between with the city, and the police is like having the mayor and police chief on our stearing committee, you go here and you do this! This week Mr Ron lead this group out of the banking center of FTL to the friendly confinds of the GLCC in Wilton Manors, only to be told you must leave there, the very next day. With people like Ron who needs Ann The Street Medic (the FBI opertive during the 2005 OAS in FTL) to do your dirty work. Wake up Occupy FTL people, there must be a reason all the season activest are in Miami and not at home in FTL.

That's really too cynical. I'm no fan of Ron Gunzburger, but I don't believe that Sue is calculating in her effort to show support for the movement.

Not cynical, been doing this to long, not see through this. Ron brought this group 3 miles from downtown FTL, out of sight and sound from the financial district. The sad part is that there was a real great group of legal support who were ready to sign on. People who had all of FTL repressive 1 st amendment ordinances overturned in federal court back in 2005. But Ron came in and took over.

Ray:

You write of "co-opted"?  Hmm.  Occupy Fort Lauderdale would really love the amazingly warm relationship Occupy Miami has with Miami-Dade County Government.  Unlike us -- where the City keeps kicking us out of the park -- you guys get to camp out because you're there because the Miami-Dade County Commission apparently says you can stay.  Here is what the Miami Herald reported about Occupy Miami's camp: "“As long as they abide by the law they can remain there,” said Suzy Trutie, spokeswoman for Miami-Dade County."  http://www.miamiherald.com/201... bless, it's wonderful you guys have coordinated this so well to win the permission of the Miami-Dade County Commission.  Sounds like you are the folks with the county mayor sitting on your steering committee.  For Broward, the struggle isn't as easy as we don't have the same level of governmental cooperation as you're finding in Miami.  All of the downtown parks in Fort Lauderdale are owned by the City of Fort Lauderdale -- not the County.  The City has zero intention of letting us keep a 24/7 camp.  So while the Broward folks would risk nightly arrests by staying in the park, your group enjoys camping out risk free.  That's a wonderful thing for Occupy Miami.  But don't use Occupy Miami's cushy "invited guests" status -- perhaps it will be revoked someday -- down there to be a reason to take potshots at those advancing the cause up here in Broward.  Different paths to the same place may end up working just fine.  Only time will tell.

A Proclamation??? Proof (in writing) that our elected officials are idiots.  I might respect the "Occupy" movement if their efforts did anything that resulted in a reduction the county's unemployment numbers.
