One person is dead and two others are injured -- including the suspect -- after a shooting broke out during a robbery yesterday morning at a check cashing shop in central Broward County, according to police.

The Broward Sheriff's Office says 33-year-old Stanley Beasley robbed the Check Cashing Store at 2927 W. Sunrise Blvd. in an unincorporated area of the county around 9:30 a.m. yesterday.

When sheriff's deputies arrived at the location, police say Beasley fired at them, ending in an exchange of gunfire that left Beasley, a store employee, and an innocent bystander across the street hit with bullets.

BSO's SWAT unit responded to the check cashing shop and successfully disarmed Beasley.

He was found with a weapon and a duffel bag full of cash, police say, and was transported to the Broward General Medical Center.

The female store employee, 25-year-old Clairemathe Geffrard, died at Broward General Medical Center a few hours after being shot.

Jorge Aguilar, 36, was across the street from the shooting near a tire store when he was hit and was also taken to Broward General Medical Center.

No one else was inside the store, but police say they were forced to evacuate nearby businesses and close the road to motorists on West Sunrise Boulevard from 27th to 31st Avenues until around 5 p.m. yesterday.

The sheriff's office says Beasley has a bit of a criminal background, which includes charges of robbery, burglary, grand theft, battery on a law enforcement officer, and resisting arrest.

According to the Florida Department of Corrections, Beasley has already served two prison sentences -- once serving nearly four years from 2000 to 2004 for cocaine and marijuana-related charges and serving just over a year from 2008 to 2009 for resisting arrest with violence, battery on a law enforcement officer, and depriving an officer of protection.

The sheriff's office says the investigation into yesterday's shooting will continue.

Four years time for having drugs, one year for violently resisting arrest? We've gotta reform the system, and specifically the drug laws, so we can lower the price, the profit, and consequently, the violence associated with drug use... because it is NOT going away. Make more room to lock up violent criminals... guys like this should not walk among us.
