Marijuana Activists: Eric Perez Died Because of Weed Prohibition

Duuuuuuuuude.

There are some bong-ripping writers and opinion-givers out there who believe that Eric Perez -- the 18-year-old who died at a West Palm Beach juvie lockup last month -- died because of the prohibition of marijuana.

Perez was already on probation for a robbery when he was younger and was sent to juvie after he was caught with some weed while riding his bike one night.

While investigators are still looking into exactly what happened that led to Perez's untimely death, cannabis fans are ablaze with anger over the situation.

"An incredible tragedy, not only caused by the incompetence of the detention center staff, but also caused by our ridiculous cannabis laws, which put this teenager in his tomb because he had some weed on him, violating his probation," The 420 Times says. "Without cannabis prohibition, there is a pretty good chance Eric would still be alive."

That sentiment seems to be echoed on the NORML Stash blog:

"In order to save Eric from a weed that could never have killed him, police placed him in custody and ignored him while he died. Marijuana doesn't kill, but prohibition sure does."

Freedom is Green
, Cannabis Culture, and The Weed Blog -- among others -- seem to agree.

Fair enough, dudes.

In that line of thinking, that means it's possible Perez wouldn't have been locked up for his weed arrest in one of 14 other states that have varying levels of marijuana decriminalization.

As former President Jimmy Carter once said, "Penalties against drug use should not be more damaging to an individual than the use of the drug itself. Nowhere is this more clear than in the laws against the possession of marijuana in private for personal use."

OK first this story is ridiculous!!!  The teen did not die bc the lack of weed, marijuana is ILLEGAL thank God!!  What do u expect the police let him smoke away???  Come on people wake up!!!!   For me to say this I have a reason I am allergic to pot, so bad that it will and can kill me, so 4 people to say MJ don't kill, u r wrong!!!! I should not have to suffer bc people wanna cough up their lungs and look all glassy-eyed, and stupid!!!!  MJ makes people crazy, they spend thousands of dollars on that instead of paying bills, making sure their KIDS have food, clothes, etc.  MY money goes on bills not drugs, I sure in the hell do NOT support terrorism, bc if u buy drugs that is where the money goes...I work too damn hard for my money and taxes go to drugs!!!  Life is great w/out drug dependency....I depend on God, not drugs!!!

DWShlthead has broken the law, and has used drugs. No one, past the age of 17, in this country can say they have never done either, NO ONE. DWShlthead has been brainwashed by the neo-con false right. And I thank most of you for seeing and understanding that.

http://www.medicalmarijuanacou...  This story is tragic.  Especially considering marijuana is non-toxic, and less harmful than a wide variety of over the counter medication that he could have been carrying in his pocket, that has the potential to kill.  I learned much from the Medical Marijuana Council, especially that people are having success treating a very wide variety of illnesses with it.

The prohibition of marijuana is nothing about it being a drug, but back in the thirties had EVERYTHING to do with illegal immigration.  It was thought that banning it would ensure no one would come across the border and was written by the evangelical right wing. Now its just a joke of a law.  Marijuana is listed as being worse than heroin?  It is less dangerous then alcohol.   Hopefully within the next decade it will finally at LEAST be decriminalized.Want to save the government money?  That would go a LONG way.  Think of all the people convicted of it that is currently in the system.  There are a LOT of them.

My condolences to the perez family and the Kelly Thomas family we need to treat these out of control cops like the murders that they are! we Shouldn't fear the police more than the criminals

Blah, Blah, Blah - The guy broke the Law ( more than once ) got caught, and went to jail.Easy fix for this, don't break the law.I have been alive for 40 + years and have never broken the law. It has been very easy to do; just make good choices and you will not have any problems. It's so hypocritical of you lefties to be so upset about this criminals death; yet you cheer on the death by abortion of innocent. crime-less babies.

Marijuana doesn't kill you, if you'd actually do some research about this drug you hate so much, you'd find this out. Just because you're allergic to something doesn't mean that it can kill you. You type like you're 10. God has nothing to do with smoking weed. I know many religious friends who smoke, some even go as far as saying, "it brings me closer to God." I accept that, I don't care, whatever floats your boat. Being addicted to marijuana is, if you're smart about smoking, almost unheard of. I love to eat Sour Punch Straws, they're so sugary and sour and taste so darn good, does that mean I'm addicted? Should I seek medical and psychological help immediately? Lastly, Timmy, I'm 100% sure the money dealers get from people who bought weed, doesn't go to terrorism... All in all, marijuana prohibition is downright ignorant and illogical. Why are cigarettes legal? They kill hundreds of thousands of people every year. Same with alcohol. Same with second hand tobacco smoke. Same with drunk driving. I just realized this was a article published, roughly, 3 months ago. Cool. Well, bye.

@DWShlthead

i know the reason you call yourself shithead... you come on here and complain that this kid broke a (unjust) law and he is DEAD ..... he wasn't harming anyone.. he just wanted to get high and relax, maybe there was a lot of stress at school, and someone killed him as a result of that ... you make me sick calling this boy a criminal!... RIP Eric Perez!

The guy is Eric and he is my nephew, he made mistakes when he was 14 and that's when he was put on probation. He was spotted because his bike didn't have any lights on it, yes he had weed but, weed never killed anyone. It was those assholes in the detention center that picked him up and dropped him on his head and then refused him medical attention as he started hallucinating, throwing up and lost his bowls for 6 1/2 hours they sat there and watch him die. They refused to call 911 because the supervisor on duty didn't want to do any extra paperwork. So because of that I no longer have my nephew here. He was a good kid, he never disrespected any adult and he excelled in school. Dick head we all make mistakes, and just because in your 40+ years you have never been arrested, that only tells me you never got caught.

Calm down retard, your giving conservatives like me a bad name. Only a drooling fool would be in favor of our current idiotic drug laws. There is zero question that boy would still be alive if it wasn't for our marijuana laws, and those laws are largely based on old wives tales and stories our grandma used to tell us. Getting government out of our lives, reducing taxes, increasing revenue, personal freedom, and putting an end to large wast full programs are all CONSERVATIVE ideas. And there are hundreds of thousands of laws on the books, unless your saying you have never broken the speed limit, then you can't say you have never broken any laws. Get off that "high" horse before someone knocks your overly righteous ass off it.

When someone you know dies because of our archaic, RACIST ( tinyurl.com/1mn ) drug laws you'll be singing a different tune, Shithead.

You want hypocracy? Check out the stats on how many people have died -- this year alone, last year alone -- directly -- from alcohol and tobacco. (I'm not even mentioning vehicular manslaughters by drunk drivers.)

Everyone breaks the law.  If you change lanes (while driving) without signaling, you're breaking the law.  I doubt anyone would ever blow your dick; but if it were to happen, you'd be breaking the law.

Lefties?!  Some fucking conservative you are buddy.  I am pretty sure that I am a registered Republican because I believe in personal freedom/liberty.  People should have the right to choose what to put into (drugs) or take out of (babies) their bodies.  Just because I do not personally agree/adhere to abortion does not entail that I (or anyone else for that matter) should dictate what others do when it comes to their bodies.  That is not conservatism, it is theocratic.

I'm willing to bet you support the death penalty AND the wars in Iraq/Afghanistan, so don't even whine about protecting the sanctity of life!  You're a troll and a RINO who is exhausting good oxygen that could be used by someone who isn't a blight on the intellectual reputation of the United States (AND the world)!

So, kindly STFU and STFD!  It is people like you that make REAL conservatives look like rabid retards.

DickWadShithead Blah, Blah Blah?

Who gives you the right to be his judge, jury and executioner? You sound like a white trash bigot who wants to shine light on his squeaky clean 40 years of being a racist and being able to slither through society picking other people apart.

The point is man was left in Correctional custody and they failed miserably in their custodial duties. A parent would be jailed for such deriliction of duty.  A good solution is to repeal the ridiculous prohibition which is responsible for an arrest every 35 seconds.  You do know the law was written out of Racism, greed, and lies, right?  Obviously you're not a fan of personal freedom. Did you know marijuana prohibition was conceived out of racism, greed and lies?  Don't take my word for it, Google Anslinger, Hearst and marijuana if you care to learn the truth.  SO, in summation, you back a law which was conceived under FDR (a leftie) and endorsed by Obama (another leftie), yet opposed by Conservatives like William Buckley, George Schultz and Gov. Johnson and a slew of other. Would you label Rep. Dr. Paul a "Leftie"?

You're pro Prohibition, just like your President so it's fair to say you have "latent leftie tendencies."  Does that tarnish your halo?MP, NYPD ret.    LEAP,  Law Enforcement Against Prohibition    LEAP.cc

So for breaking the law he deserved a death sentence no chance the law might be the problem here or how abought your lack of compassion sure I get it you never break the speed limit or jaywalk but you better hope your kids are just as obedient as you. Some laws are meant to be broken its almost encouraged so some fat cat can churn a profit on the modern day slavery that goes on in private prisons the 6th fastest growing industry in the U.S.A. this is a symtom of the frustration of an unwinable drugwar. we are human we don't all fit in your cookie-cutter world but you can join us in. reality anytime you want wake up!
