Atheist "National Registry" Proposed by Florida Pastor Discovered by the Internet a Year Later

"Pastor Mike" Michael Stahl
Update: Stahl is now sending packages of emails from atheists to "Christians only."

Pastor Michael Stahl -- or "Pastor Mike," as he's known on the net -- posted on his blog about a year ago saying he was pretty sure he was going to start a grassroots organization to keep a database of atheists called "The Christian National Registry of Atheists."

"I mean, think about it. There are already National Registrys [sic] for convicted sex offenders, ex-convicts, terrorist cells, hate groups like the KKK, skinheads, radical Islamists, etc.." Stahl writes. "This type of 'National Registry' would merely be for information purposes."

He probably thought that was a really great idea. That is, until the rest of the internet found out about his idea yesterday.

"Pastor Mike" was happy to let the rest of the interwebs know that his website got tons of hits from angry people after somebody discovered he'd just recently posted a link to the old post on his Facebook page -- which he's since had to delete.

We'll also note that Stahl's church, the "Living Water Church," isn't actually a church in Miramar. Instead, it's an online church -- or an "I-Net" church, as he calls it -- but he says he lives in Miramar.

A year later, though, Stahl says he still supports his atheist registry, and if anyone were to start a Christian registry, he says you could put him at the top of the list.

You can read all about Stahl's complaints with internet people here, but let's focus on what's really important -- the "Atheist National Registry" idea from Pastor Mike, as he says he honestly doesn't understand why anyone would be against such a thing.

He says it would just be for informational purposes and wouldn't have addresses of those damned atheists, just their names and possibly a photo.

Here's the brilliant explanation from "Pastor Mike," which includes all of his errant spelling and grammar, as well as his choices of underlining and italicizing words:

Now, many (especially the atheists), may ask "Why do this, what's the purpose?" Duhhh, Mr. Atheist for the same purpose many States put the names and photos of convicted sex offenders and other ex-felons on the I-Net - to INFORM the public! I mean, in the City of Miramar, Florida, where I live, the population is approx. 109,000. My family and I would sure like to know how many of those 109,000 are ADMITTED atheists! Perhaps we may actually know some. In which case we could begin to witness to them and warn them of the dangers of atheism. Or perhaps they are radical atheists, whose hearts are as hard as Pharaoh's, in that case, if they are business owners, we would encourage all our Christian friends, as well as the various churches and their congregations NOT to patronize them as we would only be "feeding" Satan.

Frankly, I don't see why anyone would oppose this idea - including the atheists themselves (unless of course, they're actually ashamed of their atheist religion, and would prefer to stay in the 'closet.').

In case you didn't read that, he didn't really come up with a reason for the registry except for atheists being super bad and quite possibly homosexuals.

We'll keep this one filed under "almost-great ideas."

"A year later, though, Stahl says he still supports his atheist registry, and if anyone were to start a Christian registry, he says you could put him at the top of the list."

So we should list him as an atheist then?  Right at the top of the list?

I'm strangely ok with that idea; maybe he will begin to understand why it is wrong to randomly demonize people.

ok first of all you have to be the most ignorant christian ive ever witnessed. Your comments about atheists and categorizing them with sex offenders and ex cons clearly shows your intelligence. ATHEISM IS NOT A GOD DAMN RELIGION...We do not follow a doctrine or a faith, we dont believe in faith, we believe in reasonable expectations based on evidence. Now why is it that we atheist can understand that you guys are duped in a blind faith but still can be civil and move on..its because we have moral value. Tell me is it moral to call someone u dont know a satan worshiper and class them into hate groups when you are clearly doing this yourself as a CHRISTIAN. All atheists sign his registry and lets not be the minority and stand up to the lawgivers and put a end to the suffering of ignorance.

How dare this dolt attempt to classify atheists with criminals?!  Who gave him and his fellow christian fundamentalists exclusive claim to morality or to the first amendment (which he probably can't read in any case)?  What arrogance this guy has....typical of most fundamentalists of any ilk.  And then, of course, he'll want a government list of moderate christians, too, since the fundies consider them to be worse than heathen.  And maybe we should have a national registry of Moslems, Jews, and agnostics, as well.  Perhaps we should then require Moslems to wear crescents, and Jews to wear stars and.....hey....does any of this sound familiar?

pretty much all the above are criminals and most are actually quiet religious. so basically in his mind we are criminals cause we don't believe in his imaginary friend? and as such we should not have a right to privacy or happiness and it be ok for him and his cronies to stock and harass us? Just another reason why i would never get involved in any religion, or cult like most of them seem to be anyway

I was actually not against it until I saw him compare it to the list of sex offenders and felons. It is NOT the same thing. Those lists are to warn people of possibly dangerous individuals near them. Atheists are not dangerous.

Tea Party groups must love this; the GOP  running for office ( Mitt, Newt, Perry,Ron Paul etc.) want this. Even GOV. Paul Lepage of ME would suggest this. SCREW THEM ALL!!

Pastor Mike has the information he needs to create the "list" he desires.  He claims to have the " National Registrys [sic] for convicted sex offenders, ex-convicts, terrorist cells, hate groups like the KKK, skinheads, radical Islamists, etc.."   Now all he needs is a phone book.  Find the names from those various registries in the phone book and cross them off.   Pretty much all that's left  are atheists.

Just joking.

Although his idea for the registry is off, I think it may be great for non-rational people to see that atheists are their neighbors and actually like them, and even more nice and accepting than the illogical people they grew up with. They can see that what they were taught to be afraid of is a lie, which can become the first planting of the seeds of truth.

Sure hope there's more than 1 (one) Schindler around this time... When the followers of the Christian Faith (mind you, those, who believe Jesus is Christ and they're using his life and teachings as their religion) start braking windows, burn non-christian books, make you wear a symbol on your shirt, a tatoo on your arm and such...

The 1930's Nazi's would be proud of this man.

In order to protect Bible-bashing Christians everywhere, I recommend that the following registries be added to his list:

-A Muslim database in the name of national security so that nobody blows up his church or local government building.

-In addition, a homosexual registry would prevent these sinners from turning their Christian kids Gay/Lesbian/Bi-Sexual.

-A single parent registry would ensure that Christian "family values"  are upholded.  Christian kids may be tempted to have pre-marital sex or impure thoughts because of these heathens.

- A Jewish/Buddhist/Hindu database would provide Christians an opportunity to save these lost souls by providing a database for mass mailings of the Gospel and door to door harassment of non-beleivers.  Heck, it worked during the Spanish inquisition.

After that is implemented, why not make them wear special pins or patches on their clothes identifying them as non-Christians??

I think many people here are getting caught up in the definition of atheism, whether of not it's a belief, etc.  While that is a worthwhile debate, I believe the issue at hand here is the fact that there is a whacko reverend in Florida that wants a national registry for atheists, and whats worse (though irrelevant), he wants it for clearly sinister reasons.

That is an outrage to EVERYONE.  Please, people....let's band together and never let anything like this happen to any of us.  Comparing convicted child molestors with atheists, jews, homosexuals, blacks, muslims, christians, or any race or persuasion is just plain sick.

I would like to know how Pastor Mike would determine that someone is an atheist.  Is a person who "believes" in evolution an atheist?

I seriously do not grasp these things. Why can't we just have respect with each other's beliefs?

In fact, personally, this kind of shit doesn't just make religion more unattracive to me, it actually turns me 'against' religion even more.

Surely this idiot realises, that his behaviour, and other religious people's behaviour which is hateful like his, will only make religion look a lot more unattractive to the non religious, and therefore will make it way way less likely for atheists/agnostics/the non religious, to become religious, or for them to join his religion.

Evey time I hear about stories like this, it just proves to me, and reminds me more and more, of just how disgusting, hateful, wicked, and poisionus religion really is.

Just goes to show that a lot (not all), but a lot of religous people really aren't that bright at all.

Absolute accurate perceptions written in a very detailed manner on this page when it comes to gain some knowledge in regard to foreclosed properties. I propose that we form another registry.  We can call it the NRCCC:  the National Registry of Christian Cretin Crackpots, and we will definitely put this bigoted idiot at the top.  And we certainly want to know if he's in business so we can boycott it and give him a free copy of Darwin's Origin of Species.

Perhaps the Ancient Romans had the right idea - feeding Christians to the lions! lol.

Seriously though, everyone seems scared of fundamental Muslims. But fundamental right-wing Christians are every bit as bad - perhaps even worse. The really scary part is that so many Americans seem to take these right-wing nut-jobs seriously.

Yo, Mike... y'see, the way it works is; if you don't believe in God, you don't believe in Satan, either.  Goes hand-in-hand.  Kinda like religion and hypocrisy.

A number of my Atheist friends bristle when people talk about religion especially in public settings and will sometimes say they are proud to be Atheists.  That has always seemed to me to be a religious stance.  I'm not proud to not believe in a God anymore than I am proud to not believe that Clindamycin is going to resolve my sore throat.  It just seems unlikely.  If people want to make an issue of it I guess I'll say that I "believe" in all antibiotics.

Is this guy an idiot or what? Well I suppose he IS Christian after all, so 'nuff said there. He probably thinks the Earth is the center of the universe as well. Thankfully in 50 years no one will remember who he was, nor care.

Whilst I wholeheartedly sympathise with your sentiment, I do question its accuracy.

You see, a dildo is specifically designed to give a woman pleasure. Whereas I believe that it is highly unlikely that this phuqwit pastor has ever pleasured a woman in his life.

I mean, just look at him! lol! :-)
