Allen West Says He's Harriet Tubman, Promises to Get Black People Off the "Plantation"

Harriet Tubman
Always a fan of skewed historical references, Rep. Allen West went on Fox News yesterday to proclaim he's the "modern-day Harriet Tubman," and says he's the one that will get the nation's African-Americans off the "21st century plantation."

The "plantation" isn't a new reference for West, but being Harriet Tubman and taking black people on his "underground railroad" is a new one.

And who are the overseers of said "plantation?" Why, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Maxine Waters, and Barbara Lee, of course. But that's some sort of conspiracy theory orchestrated by "white liberals," West explains.

"I'm gonna be brutally honest," West said to Laura Ingraham, who was sitting in for Papa Bear Bill O'Reilly on the O'Reilly Factor yesterday. "White liberals have turned over to certain leaders -- perceived leaders -- in the black community like a Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, a Maxine Waters or Barbara Lee, and said, 'pacify and keep the black community firmly behind us regardless of the failures of our social welfare policies.'"

This was all part of a segment titled, "Are African-Americans Unhappy With Obama?" and as my New Times colleague Stefan Kamph says, "If a headline ends in a question mark, the answer is 'no.'"

The segment even features Maxine Waters' recent statements about President Obama to fuel their concocted theory, but nonetheless, we're more interested in what sort of slave-emancipation expedition West's going to embark on in his role of Harriet Tubman.

Check out the video of West describing the slave scenario below:

TV reporter’s advice to GOP candidate West draws heatby George Bennett | May 14th, 2010 A WPTV Channel 5 reporter’s advice to Republican congressional candidate Allen West on his TV appearances has been deemed “inconsistent” with station policy and drawn fire from the campaign of U.S. Rep. Ron Klein, D-Boca Raton. Klein supporters were alarmed recently when they saw a YouTube video of an event in which West introduced WPTV reporter Angela Sachitano and said she “does our media relations.”Sachitano has no formal role with the West campaign, but she and her husband are friends with the candidate, West campaign manager Josh Grodin said. West said in an e-mail that Sachitano “provides me insights into how to improve my media appearance/presence and conduct of interviews.”Sachitano has covered a handful of stories involving Klein and West, including a recent report on the political ramifications of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. When West opened his campaign headquarters in Deerfield Beach last month, a video posted on YouTube showed him introducing a variety of campaign staffers and volunteers, including Sachitano.“Angela Sachitano, who does our media relations, has done such a great job in helping me to develop that presence, so that when I go on MSNBC, you notice I didn’t smile with those folks, because you have to know how to project the right type of presence, so Angela thank you,” West says in the clip.West, a retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel, said later that Sachitano’s husband, a former Army captian, was an early volunteer on West’s losing 2008 campaign against Klein.Angela Sachitano wouldn’t comment and referred questions to WPTV News Director Jeff Brogan.Said Brogan: “Through her husband Angela has a personal friendship with Allen West. While we have no reason to believe that relationship has negatively impacted her work as a journalist we did find her involvement with this campaign inconsistent with our policy. We’ve taken the appropriate action to address the situation.”Brogan’s statement didn’t elaborate on the “appropriate action.”Klein campaign spokeswoman Sarah Rothschild blasted West.“To have a high profile member of the media personally advising Allen West, while that individual is also simultaneously reporting on the campaign, is beyond what is acceptable. Of course, unethical behavior from Allen West and his campaign is becoming the norm. South Florida residents deserve fair and unbiased coverage of the news and West is trying to undermine that.”

I am a 60 year old Hyatt hotel African American housekeeper working in West Hollywood, a registered Democrat, and would like to meet with this so called "Harriet Tubman." One of the owners of my hotel is Democrat Penny Pritzker of Chi ago. I would like to offer a challenge to Allen West. If he could meet with me since he is calling himself "a modern day Harriet Tubman" and would like for him to set up a meeting with Penny to discuss, in my opinion the slavery like workload of Hyatt hotel housekeepers, union and non-union workers alike. So please Allen, shoot me an email at chefyoungblood7@yahoo.com. I am waiting to be led "off the plantation." Cathy Youngblood

How is the workload slavery like? Do they not pay you for the full time that you are working?

No, most of us work through our breaks to finish to avoid discipline. I am running through the rooms (not walking) to finish. We have a 100 point inspection every day, rooms must be cleaned according to Hyatt standards. We are assigned too many rooms per day; many things can go wrong to prevent you from completing your assignments, say for instance, not enough linen, guests place do not disturb signs on doors and don't take them off until late afternoon, some rooms are "party dirty" and require longer to clean, vomit, blood, human feces, animal stains take longer to clean, carpet spots, spots on walls and furniture, bedskirt stains, not enough clean glasses ready in the morning or other needed supplies; the list goes on.... Any manager should make adjustments, however that is not the case in many hotels. We must finish despite these interruptions, so this is why I have fresh bruises every day, literally running into furniture, guests suitcases, and other obstacles as I try my best to complete all assignments. Working like this is a form of abuse. People should not be worked like they were chattel (which by the way that's what the enslaved were called during slavery. Also, working through state mandated break times is a form of wage theft. And the pay is too low for the amount of physical labor required on a job like this. I was on unemployment for a year and a half before being offered this housekeeping job. I was however quite shocked upon finding the way housekeepers were treated, this being 2011. Oh, yes I have 4 (yes I said four) college degrees, but who hires older women? I am a cultural anthropologist by profession, but don't mind working hard, but do mind being abused! But looking on the bright side, I am going on for a Ph.d with studies concerning the challenges facing older women in the hotel industry. Now, wouldn't that be something if I wrote a book on my experiences in the hotel industry! These housekeepers, myself included, are fighting for dignity, respect, and much higher wages. We are worth our weight in gold. So I am willing to give Allen West a try... who knows, maybe, just maybe, he can bend my corporate owner's ear...

Maybe  instead of getting the black people off of the plantation he should get them out of Plantation!

Who voted this guy into office????

Col. West is absolutely correct. The Democratic Party is thenew plantation owners and employee Obama, Jackson, Sharpton, Waters, McKinney, andnumerous other blacks as the field bosses to keep the rest of the blacks inline to vote Democrat and keep “massa” in office. In return for these votes parasiticprograms are given to the black voters.

Quit school or don’t want to work? No problem we sign you upfor welfare.

Pop out kids you cannot support? No problem we will give youSection 8 and EBT Cards. No medical insurance? We will give you free medicalprograms.

We Democrats will stealfrom working Americans part of their pay checks (through forced taxes) and giveit to you to continue your poor habits and decisions in life. All we want inreturn is your vote. Vote for a Republican and he will take away your freebiesin life. Now just get back out in the field and vote Democrat and your freebieswill keep coming.

America would be much better off if the majority of blacksemulated Col. West instead of Kayne West.

As usual, I can only shake my head at people who blither on about how the only way for the blacks to get free is to get off welfare and join the army. Because nothing screams "liberty" like being ordered by elderly white folk to murder people, with prison as your only other option...

oh, and all your bills are STILL paid by big brother. in fact, it looks to me like West hasn't made a single dime in over 20 years that hasn't been at taxpayer's expense...how the fuck is that an example of how to cut one's reliance on big government? and how exactly does that stack up to someone who used their talents to become independently wealthy?

"A black man voting for a Republican is like the chickens voting for Colonel Sanders."

Since he was a Colonel, I think it is only appropriate that West be referred to in the African American community as....Colonel Sanders.

I can't bring myself to watch the video. I just had a nice lunch and wouldn't want to lose it. I stick by my prediction that the more public appearances West makes the deeper the hole he is digging. The only people more frightening than West are his supporters.

PS the dude has to figure out some way to pander to the black vote in his district, because they just might look past his ethnicity the next time. The Tubman schtick is about all he has.

Wow there is a lot of moronic things in this article.  West thinking he is Tubman, bragging on FOX news about it, an doing that to Laura Ingram.Yes, we have a trifecta of idiocy. It is interesting to notice though that to be black in the repub party, and especially the tea bag portion, you must be self hating.

Name one Civil Rights issue that Republicans have supported in the last 40 years. They won't even pass an ERA bill. They want to pay workers less money for more hours, and rescind all social programs that benefit the poor.Allen West's logic is so twisted he thinks that the best thing for this country is to let the rich get richer, tax the poor more, and pay for the economic collapse out of programs that benefit the poor.Yeah Republicans really looking out for the little guy. What an idiot.

I truly consider nearly all Republican politicians to be vile, contemptible scum, but if you do the research you'll find that LBJ's great Civil Rights Act of 1964 was mostly opposed by Democrats from the South. Its passage was greatly advanced by support from moderate Republicans -- who in almost no way resemble today's Republicans, who are R.I.N.O.s (Republicans in name only).

give it about half an hour and one of west's supporters will be here to insist that we should thank the gop every single day for the state of equal rights today because they were the great white messiahs of the civil rights era (and of course they're right just not in the sense they mean)...i'm waiting...

So West styles himself as the 21st century messiah.

Maybe he means "out of Plantation," where he lives. Like in, "I will get the nation's African-Americans out of Plantation."Dumb ass.
