Allen West on Gay Soldiers: "People Can Change Their Behavior, but I Can't Change My Color"

West was asked by an audience member at a speech Saturday night about openly gay people serving in the United States military, according to the Tampa Tribune.
His response: It's too late, but gays are going to "break down the military."
"When you take the military and you tell it they must conform to the individual's behavior, then it's just a matter of time until you break down the military," he said.
But what about racial integration into the military? Would West have said the same thing?
There's no comparison there, West says.
"Let me explain something to you," West said. "I can't change my color. People can change their behavior, but I can't change my color."
Apparently "pray the gay away" is catching on, although this isn't a new stance from West.
On the other hand, if West is sure that people can change their behavior, there are certainly a few Democrats who would like him to do so.
Patrick Murphy, the hopeful Democratic challenger to West next year, is one of those people.
Murphy says Saturday's comments are just one in a long line of West's statements demonstrating his "irrational fear of the gay and lesbian community."
Further, Murphy says West's comment of allowing gays will "break down the military" is "simply not befitting a congressman, never mind a veteran of the military."
"It is hate speech, pure and simple -- and not the kind that voters should tolerate from an elected leader who is clearly showing he lacks the control to lead," Murphy says.
