Underage Sex Trafficking: Ashton Kutcher Is Wrong

Bestiality is still legal in Florida for now, but everyone can agree that underage sex trafficking is not. Ashton Kutcher has been spouting off numbers in his latest media campaign, claiming there are 100,000 to 300,000 children in America forced into prostitution each year. He's wrong.

We know because we spent two months researching law enforcement data.

We examined arrest reports during a ten-year period for juvenile prostitution in the nation's 37 largest cities and found an average of 827 arrests per year. That amounts to roughly 8,270 arrests in a decade, which is far fewer than 300,000 arrests per year.

Want to know how many of those children are in Fort Lauderdale/Broward County? Check out this graphic.

While I appreciate the New Times interest in the subject, I must disagree with your story premise and conclusions. If your intent was to lure the DNA Foundation into a debate with you by touting the headlines....good luck. Its truly a lack of education on the part of the New Times, and specifically the authors of this particular piece. If you look beyond the poorly cited statistics and understand that this is a difficult crime to identify, and the numbers do not necessarily convey the extent and severity of the problem, then maybe you would have received a C for article. As it is, I think that the authors, and New Times would receive an F rating from the Broward Human Trafficking Coalition. When you are willing to talk with local persons involved in the issue on a daily basis, then maybe you will understand more clearly that the New Times is also part of the problem.Let us know when you are ready to learn more about the issue and improve your overall education and grade.

Devin, do you understand what kind of self-promotional exploitation you are taking part in by posting this complicit compendium?  Do you understand that your company knowingly facilitates the pimps who are selling these women, women who probably weren't lucky enough to have your privileged background? Yes, the statistics that celebrities throw around are stupid. But taking part in a corporation-wide defense of prostitution because the women (victims) are, according to your warped calculations, ALMOST all adults is much worse. If you were really interested in getting the "truth" out there, you'd post how much money your paper takes in from prostitution ads.

Just 7 per year?

Hell, on a good Easter Weekend, the Catholic Church probably triples that number.

You are comparing apples to oranges! The number of arrests do not indicate how many children are forced into prostitution- the arests only indicate the numbers of johns who got caught. Exceptionally faulty reasoning going on here.

Devin, can you please address some of the things mentioned in this thread? You realize that women are getting hurt because of your company, and that by promoting the corporate story, you are helping that, don't you? Does New Times fight against underage prostitution by, say, IDing the girls they take hooker ad money from? Does your job pay you so well that you can't even discuss what you're taking part in?

If it was happening as much as they say, then there would BE more arrests.  The numbers do not support the theory that there is this gigantic underage prostitution ring. See, the more people doing it means more people would be arrested.  This is why we know the moon landing could not be faked.  With so many people involved, someone is going to slip up since most people are not so bright.Really thought everyone would know this.

Dude, because more people don't get caught? That's your reasoning??? You are assuming an adept law enforcement. Pedophiles are exceptionally skilled at skirting law enforcement.

How is it faulted?  This is pretty basic stuff.  Lets here your argument for my "faulted logic".  Start actually providing some facts instead of just spewing nonsense. The numbers are always exponential.  The more people doing something, more get caught doing it.  You should know this from kindergarten.
