Steve Gonot, the former Deerfield Beach Commissioner convicted in May of stealing campaign funds and misconduct charges, was denied a new trial this morning.

Broward County Circuit Judge Barbara McCarthy denied Gonot's request, and maintained the scheduled sentencing for June 20.

Gonot, 54, was found guilty of felony grand theft for stealing $5,135 of his own campaign money, as well as misdemeanor charges of falsifying public records for the phony treasurer's report and official misconduct.

Deerfield Beach activist Chaz Stevens tells New Times he hears Gonot will receive three to five years in prison at his June 20 sentencing, whereas the charges bring a maximum prison sentence of 10 years.

Gonot remains free on bail, pending his June 20 sentencing.

Former Deerfield Beach Mayor Al Capellini will also be in a Broward court on June 20, for a status conference for his impending September trial for unlawful compensation -- a felony.

Sylvia Poitier, also a former Deerfield Beach commissioner, is scheduled to show up to court on Thursday for a calendar call before her impending trial on five misdemeanor counts of falsifying records.

Is this the same McCarthy who let Levin walk? Poor Gonot. She has a ton of making up to do and he may get some of Levin's penance to do.

McCarthy is the judge? Well, if she gave someone 2 years of house arrest for DUI manslaughter and leaving the scene, I predict Gonot will be sentenced to 1 hour in the Broward County Bus Terminal.
