Margate Mosque Protest: An Assembly Of Anti-Intellectualism

Margate's Masjid Jamaat Al-Mumineen mosque
Yesterday before noon, a few religulous leaders held a press conference outside the Masjid Jamaat Al-Mumineen mosque in Margate, preparing for that night's rally against the mosque and Islam in general.

What happened last night at the protest, however, went beyond blatant Islamophobia. These protesters were seemingly at war with truth, justice, and rational thought.

They certainly had the right to protest -- aside from their Constitutional right to assembly, the mosque's former imam, 24-year-old Izhar Khan, had been indicted in a conspiracy to support the Pakistani Taliban.

Mosque leaders have insisted since Khan's arrest that no one else in the mosque was ever under formal investigation, nor has the mosque itself. The FBI has even said itself that Khan's indictment implies no wrongdoing by the mosque.

But not only did the protesters believe Khan was guilty from the get-go, they also implicate the mosque, as well as all of Islam, for the world's ills -- right there in Margate.

The typical fear-mongering signs and slogans were there -- "Muslims and sharia law must go" and "stop citizenship for enemies."

Then the lunatic irrationality came out.

A woman in the crowd is talking to a man about bringing her young daughter to the protest, and says to him, "You have to be wondering if they're the reason for all the missing kids."

A man makes a puzzling reference to President Obama's birth certificate, while Nezar Hamze -- the executive director of the South Florida's Council on American-Islamic Relations -- tries to explain to a conservative radio host that the only thing people do at the mosque is "come here and pray."

Twenty or 30 mosque-goers are standing in the front of their building, watching the lunacy of the people are on the other side of the hedges.

"Murderers!" a man screams in their direction.

"Are you going to blow up our daycare centers?" a woman yells hysterically.

The protesters suddenly burst into singing "God Bless America" in unison. The mosque's worshipers join in the singing, eventually drowning out the other side.

It looked like a confusing moment for the protesters -- when they realized that the mosque's members were American too.

The protesters still kept yelling, but the crowd began to dissipate. At 8:12 p.m., the mosque's members went inside for sunset prayer, and the protesters vanished.

Check out New Times' photo slideshow of the protest here.

Let  me guess what the protesters look like. uhhh. White, shabby looking or $4 shirt and $10 pants, smoking tons of cigarette, angry as hell, an (NRA,nascar, beer) logo somewhere, bad teeth, foul language lovers, hate just about everyone who is not white looking ( does not need to be caucasian just white looking), daugther oggling the black dude in the neighboorhood or dating the black dude)..............and the list goes on.

I bet none care to partake with the teachers protest against layoffs and Broward School corruption and ineptness.

Sure as hell get together for a lynching.

Matthew, thank you for the story. It put a smile on my face. This really does show how idiotic the protesters were. It just amazes me.

These nits apparently don't understand that the Imam was merely a guy the US Government authorized to live in this country. So if everyone associated with him is guilty of "supporting terrorism" solely because he is "accused" (not found guilty, just accused) then the US Government is guilty as well. After all the citizens & residents of that mosque depended on the U.S. Government to screen all who came to this country.

As for the types who protest at houses of worship... that alone says a lot about their un-American nature. FREEDOM of RELIGION isn't a part of their vocabulary. Nor is the US Constitution. Or the rights of anyone who disagrees with their Taliban-style morality and desired enforcement. They claim to be Americans concerned for America, but they are only concerned about promoting a future war between Muslims & "the Christian world" so that they can have their "Rapture".

Ironically they failed to read their bible and come to realize that it doesn't say they will be lifted up BEFORE the horror of the End Times. They are worse than the Taliban... for they want entire world destruction so that THEY can (only they and their members) can enter their definition of paradise. And they say Muslims are religious zealots!!

I... what... ugh. I wish people would pay attention to what they were saying. Just once. Please. It is almost physically painful to listen to these morons.

Are you people forgetting the FACT that the LEADER of this mosque is sitting in jail for funding terrorism, funds specifically meant for the use of killing our soldiers.  Conspiracy theory, really?  Glenn Beck must have set up the paper trail and audio tapes of the imam wishing for the death of 50,000 US troops.  Not all muslims are terrorists, but 99% of terrorists are muslim.

Now where have I seen similar things happen?  Oh yeah, Germany back in the 30s and into the 40s!They too had it in their head that, in their case, the Jews were sneaking into houses and stealing babies.Complete nonsense.  Wonder if the national news will pick up the story and run it to show just how idiotic these people are. These tea baggers just need to go away and shut the hell up.  Their conspiracy theories are routinely proven wrong, but they have Beck and FOX giving them new ones.Never once did they ever think about maybe TALKING to someone who is Islamic.  They are all over the place, I know several.  Guess what?  They are nothing like you make them out to be.  Yes, there are bad Muslims, just like there are bad Christians.  But that is not ALL of them.I will wait with baited breath to read your replies saying I hate America (false) and I have no idea what I am talking about (and I do since I do not shut the actual world out of my experience).

You liberal misrepresentative fool.  "Anti-intelectualism", "confusing" to the protesters.  You are the only who is confused Matthew.  The only confusion at the protest is the misinformation spread by the criminal entity CAIR.  You do know what Islamic law teaches about homosexuality don't you Matthew.

Okay maybe the protester were not all those thing but I will make a general assessment that they were, White and angry ass hell ( not sure what they are angry at but just angry).

leave this nice quote for you guys:

"Liberals generally have a larger anterior cingulate cortex — a comma-shaped region near the front of the brain that is involved in decision-making. By contrast, those who identified as conservatives had larger amygdalas — almond-shaped structures that are linked with emotional learning and the processing of fear."

Worst than the Taliban, who burn down schools and forbid women to be seen in public without a male escort, ban music and sports, etc. Thank God, yours and mine (one and the same by the way) that we only have to endure a few people shouting.

no, you're just forgetting that this article is about strange, confused people terrorizing a place of worship full of people they know nothing about.

SMDrPepper, I'm MUSLIM... not "Islamic". Just to clarify. While ISLAM is the religion. Those who follow it are not Islamists or "Islamics". We're Muslim. I agree with you that these people don't bother knowing Muslims. Heck they don't even know when they pass people like me that we're Muslim. Because we don't fit their negative stereotype! They will support the killing of innocent Sikhs because they wear turbans and have dark skin.  Heck the whole stereotype of Arab equals Muslims is insane! Arab Muslims make up less than 12% of the Muslim world. Yet these nits are actually after the ARAB world. Lets face it. For over 20 years the neocons and radical right wing evangelical community have had webpages promoting the "mission" targets within the Muslim world's population. They have people who have made their living preaching to their congregations on how to SNEAK into Muslim countries illegally to "preach the gospel" when often those laws are in place to prevent religious upheaval (ie Indonesia and Malaysia for example). These nits in the next breath argue that Obama is a "secret Muslim" because his father was Muslim! Well if that's the way it works... regardless of whether Obama grew up Christian. IF its solely biological, then why do they push their religion on Muslims to get converts? Their own belief system illustrates they don't believe the child of a Muslim can be a "real" Christian. So why do they bother sending their money to those missions? What is their real agenda in doing it? If its not to "witness"?

Damonr1970,

Islam doesn't point fingers at "homosexuals" based on what they wear or how they act. It doesn't assume people are "guilty" without evidence. As Jesus said to those who accused  Mary "he who is without sin...."

You want to attack a faith you know little about. Islam teaches us that we must accept the cross-gendered person. It teaches us that we must comply with certain gender based behavior as long as the person is physically within that gender (sex) though their mental gender may be the opposite to the physical. Yet it is seen under shariah law as a "deformity". NOT the mental, but the physical state of the body. Thus once medical correction is done -- we as Muslims are obliged to accept the new gender of transgendered person. Can you say that is in your religious laws?

If not, quit pointing fingers at my religion! Mine at least doesn't attack the laws of God by claiming SCIENCE is false! After all, SCIENCE is the observation of God's laws.

Pot, kettle, black.Last I check, christians are trying to kill gay people.  And they are trying to do away with the study of actual science thinking that Evolution cannot possible happen, DESPITE the proof.

Nutjob. This comment is a good example of the bigotry and racism radical extremist neocons have over the weak minds of America.

Again, we should not be lowering ourselves to these other countries. Lead by example and make and be proud of our country that leads and protect our freedoms.

Terrorized?? Seriously??? Luckily just a few people shouting, In other countries  where Muslims feel compelled to burn down churches and temples when they don't like what they hear.

me125681
me125681

Why are Muslims so afraid of other Religions? Why do they have to pass laws preventing the other religions from preaching, If Muslims were stronger in their beliefs they wouldn't need laws to prevent Muslims from killing non-Muslims! Any Religion could preach openly on the street and Muslims wont care except for the fact that they have been taught to squelch all other religious speech.

me125681
me125681

Religions laws? There are no Religious laws in other religions, just beliefs, Islam is the only Religion that has it own courts, judges, and morality police. In this country I can not be put in jail for calling Mohamed just another wacko zealot who convinced a bunch of people to believe what he believes. Try saying that out loud in Indonesia, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Iran?

I find it discouraging that many of those here decrying the protestors lack of tolerance and broad, sweeping, stereotyped generalizations find the need to engage in the exact same rhetoric towards christians (specifically calling out SMDrPepper, gefiltefish, and Anisah David).

"Christians are trying to kill gay people?" - Really? Or do SOME christians dissapprove of gays, while some are neutral, while others support their rights, and some homosexuals self-identify as christian? Wouldn't it be more accurate to state "a handful of christians over the last 20 years have attempted or succeeded in murdering people based on their sexual orientation, but represent a tiny, insignificant fraction of Christians?".

You guys are all just as bad as the protestors, but because your racism is targeted towards the mainstream and couched in slightly more intellectual terms than your slightly less-educated protesting counterparts, you seem to feel that it sets you apart from them.

Not that it matters in the least, but I'm not a big fan of any organized religion. But i'm even less of a fan of those that would attack or belittle anothers beliefs, or lump them all together based on a shared demography (race, religion, socioeconomic status, country of origin, etc.).

constantly threatening the way of life for innocent women and children and telling them they're not welcome in their community is may not fit the enforceable form of terrorism but it certainly fits the definition. if these were animal rights activists or if this were directed at jews or christians, i doubt you'd complain

Um...Sir?  We live in a country that promotes freedom. We are/should be the beacon of light to the other countries whom have intolerance and barbaric ideologies.

Please, you make yourself look bad. We are the leaders in Freedom and should promote and be proud about that, not lower ourselves to those other countries.

nothing you just said has anything to do with Muslim-Americans.

Wow, just wow. You have got to be kidding? Have you never heard of Beth Din? Catholic religious courts, canon law? Many religions have religious law, the other two Abrahamic faiths do in fact. And they operate here in america everyday. We have Jews in courts right now dealing with their religious matters, the same way that muslims want to do in sharia courts. You're so ignorant it's almost funny.
