200 MPH on A1A? IndyCar Series Lobbying for Fort Lauderdale Grand Prix

• The International Speedway Corporation (ISC) kicked Indy Car out of all their venues this year. So, no more Sears Point, Watkins Glen, Homestead, etc. Indy Car has responded by adding exotic venues like downtown Baltimore to their schedule. Ft. Lauderdale next? Who knows? And, for reference, organizers of the Miami Grand Prix of the Americas re-applied for permits to stage the event there once again. Problem is, the City of Miami was never paid back the $4m they put up in 2001 and Indy Car insisted on having Miami put $7m up this time. By the way, they got the permit but not the money. Hold your breath on Ft. Lauderdale. RM

• Let's face it, Fort Lauderdale isn't Monte Carlo. And the IRL certainly isn't Formula 1. F1 and Monaco have 60+ years of tradition together, galmour, glitz and glory, not to mention Ferrari. What does the IRL have? The Indy 500? Name the winner (here's a hint, it wasn't Danica!) If residents want to put up with miles of Jersey barriers and catch fencing to run a one-off (or 2 year) street circus so be it. Ask the folks in St Pete, Edmonton, Cleveland, or even Long Beach how good of a show the IRL puts on. National TV exposure? Ever heard of Versus? Good luck on it, it will be as successful as the Grand Prix of Palm Beach. Anyone remember that one?

• The irl is a complete fraud masquerading as motorsport. This is nothing but a cheap, lame, shoddy imitation of the old CART series, but with none of the qualities that made it successful and quite popular for many years. The 'league' has horrendously poor attendance, people actively avoid these 'events' even when they try to give away tickets (witness this past weekends disaster in Milwaukee), and the league is notorious for making completely false economic impact claims using old CART data. The television ratings for the irl are an absolute joke. The idea that this rolling heap of garbage wagons would somehow showcase the city is an absolute myth. This would be an absolute disaster for Ft Lauderdale to involve itself with these Indiana scumbags.

• Didn't they have a grand prix in Miami itself? Ummm on AIA where would they have turns?

• Apparently you never took in the St. Pete road race.   On the circuit, it was one of the top venues.

• There are so many variables I can think of that will make this close to impossible or cost taxpayers millions to manage. -No stretch of road on the beach is larger than two lanes. -Hundreds of beach-side residents would be trapped in their condos, and I hear they are persnickety about loud noises as well. -Traffic would come to a standstill. -EMS and Police overtime hours would run rampant on the taxpayer's dime. -Promotion of race cars on a stretch of beach where we try try and promote alternative transportation methods to ease congestion. An oxymoron? -Relaxing on the beach with smell of gasoline permeating everything. -God forbid there is an accident injuring anyone or destroying public or private property. I'm sure I could think of a few others, but you get the point. Is this really why people go to the beach, to get a petroleum adrenaline rush, or kick back relax and enjoy the splendor of nature? The only reason the roads should ever be closed on the beach is for pedestrian traffic.

• What happened to the Homestead races?

• I sure hope so. Going to miss the Homestead races and it was closer  the Daytona. Homestead also allowed seeing NASCAR and INDY both at the same time.
