Hallandale Neighbors in a Schvitz About Proposed New Charter School

Around 100 Hallandale Beach residents who live near the Hallandale Jewish Center have signed a petition opposing the opening of a new K-8 charter school on the site. The school would be run by the Ben Gamla Charter School, which already has locations in Hollywood and Sunrise.

Broward Bulldog has a rundown on the years-long debate about the new school, which would receive the same public funding as public schools to educate around 450 kids. Some are protesting the very idea of using government funds for a religiously affiliated school -- although Ben Gamla says it teaches Hebrew only in a cultural context and doesn't require students to say prayers.

Neighborhood opposition to a new school, especially a charter, is nothing new. Sometimes the discussion is even more heated, as with
School Board member Jennifer Gottlieb's pet project, a Montessori school in Hollywood, where her kids (and Mayor Peter Bober's) were quickly accepted.

One of the chief pushers of the new Ben Gamla school in Hallandale is former U.S. Rep. Peter Deutsch, who once challenged Mitch Ceasar for the Democratic party chair position. Deutsch lives off Stirling Road in Hollywood, 15 minutes from the proposed school.

Meanwhile, neighbors say that a new school would bring heavy traffic that the city can't handle. A decision on the school was pulled from the May 18 City Commission meeting because of the ongoing debate. Mayor Joy Cooper says she's working on a resolution.

I wouldn't know about opposition to ANY SCHOOL at that location. You can say that now, but I attended all of the community meetings. Every single argument went against ANY increased use of the property. This school is just one possible use.

There was one exception to this. A pro-union, anti charter school crowd has attached itself to the issue. Just another bone for them to growl about. Because its a lot easier to criticize successful charter schools, than fix their own failing, dismally performing public schools with their tenured, comatose staffing. And if you are against increased use of the property, so what if the anti charter people ring in. So what if the guy next to you is a Jew Hating piece of filth. Let's keep that property empty! The neighborhood simply wishes to preserve its benefit of what has become a run down but quiet vacant property. Though the desire is understandable, it is not fair to the property owner (old or new). If a 1200 member house of worship is acceptable to the neighborhood, so should a well run, high-performing school. That is unless it is being run by the BIG BAD Jew in Sheep's Clothing, Peter Deutsch.  You know...that conniving, thieving Jew who abuses county funds by successfully educating children for less than 90% of what the county pays at their own public schools.Wow! What an a**hole, how dare he educate children under-budget and how dare he make a profit for doing so. Maybe the after Broward County spends millions investigating itself for flushing untold countless millions down the toilet, they can investigate Peter Deutsch to see how he his making schools profitable and successful. Yes Ladyjen, the whole thing doesn't make sense to me either.

I think it is just terrible how some in our local community have treated this school, especially the Hallandale EAC. Mr Deutsch wanted to rejuvenate a neglected and almost vacant property with what will be a top performing school. The really sad thing is that the property will likely get sold instead to a religious group (church, etc)  that can support such a large building zoned for a house of worship.

We will then have all the traffic, noise, parking and property use when we are all home (evenings and weekends) instead of during business hours. Sounds like the real issue here is something much older and uglier than anyone is willing to call by name. I actually hope these Jew haters are successful in their opposition. At least they won't have any trouble waking up early on the weekends.

I hear Ben Gamla is trying to open 2 more schools in W Palm Bch...school board members should read the position statement from the Hallandale EAC prior to making their decisions.

Ok now!
Ok now!

Did I hear that someone is proposing an Arab language charter school near deutsch's home?

get real!  Deutsch didn't want to rejuvenate the neighborhood.  He wanted to make $ as a landlord 'cause he got the property cheap, and he wanted to make $/student head count.  It's a F0R PROFIT, privately-owned school, using public funds!  And, just because the community disagreed doesn't make them Jew Haters...many of them were Jews, themselves.

I said the property was to be rejuvenated, whether the community wants to look as nice as the new school is up to the community.

Being Jewish sadly does not give you an automatic pass for being a racist or even a Jew hater, self hating or not. It should, but it doesn't. Tragically sad but true.

What you also have is a self selected group of people that are so viciuosly opposed to public charter schools, they would burn their own mothers, if it would help their anti charter agenda. The fact that they can take out their personal and professional frustrations on a group that is predominantly Jewish is a bonus for the racist Jew haters in the crowd.

Finally, if Mr Duetsch can deliver a performing school and do it for less $$ than the county, and make a profit...more power to him.

The facts don't support your position? Just cry racism and you no longer have to make any sense. For uninformed hatethehaters; a minor detail like the community being opposed to ANY school at that location completely interferes with with reality and truth, doesn't it?The fact that Deutsch is abusing public school funds is just additional information that doesn't help his cause. As for neighbors rising early if a new house of worship moves in, it won't be any different than when the temple was going full force with 1200 members attending weekends and holidays. No one ever complained about that but don't spread that fact around either because then you REALLY won't be able to cry racism.
