Parents Almost Let Child Die, Fearing Blood Transfusion Would Change His Personality

blood_transfusion.jpg
When Rock and Benjy Sanozier of Plantation brought their son June 21 to Broward General Medical Center, doctors determined that the 3-year-old had pneumonia and that his spleen was clogged with blood.

After trying medications, doctors figured the only thing that could save the child's life would be a blood transfusion and maybe the removal of his spleen.

But the Sanoziers are practicing Jehovah's Witnesses, who believe the Bible forbids blood transfusions. And even though it might kill their son, they refused to give doctors permission. The reasons,
according to recently released court documents, is that the couple feared a blood transfusion could change their son's personality.

The boy's doctor, pediatric cancer and blood specialist Hector Rodriguez-Cortes, asked the State Attorney's Office to step in, and file court papers that would allow a judge to sign off on the procedure despite the parents' wishes.  The hearing was requested and took place June 24.

Scott Raft, the assistant state attorney handling the case, told New Times that the doctors and prosecutors were rushing to make sure an emergency hearing could be held before the boy died.

"As we were waiting for the hearing, the hospital lawyers got a phone call from doctors, saying that the baby was crashing," Raft said."We were literally running up [the courthouse] stairs."

Since 1993, state prosecutors have been allowed to petition courts on behalf of children whose parents' refusal to OK medical treatment will result in death. Raft said he's handled from 50 to 100 of these case in his 25 years practicing law.

Raft said that his office will only agree to go through this petition process if a child's death is indisputably "imminent" without treatment. Also, the requested procedure must be virtually guaranteed to work without devastating side effects.

"It has to be a very, very clear circumstance," he said.  Though healthy spleens filter blood effortlessly, sickle cell patients have irregularly shaped red blood cells, so the blood essentially gets stuck in the upper-abdomen organ. This means that the rest of the body can't get any blood. The condition is fatal if left untreated.

Circuit Judge Susan J. Aramony agreed that the Sanozier case was one such circumstance. The boy received treatment -- right as his bodily systems neared total collapse.

The child's current condition is not known. His status has not been made public. The Sanoziers could not be reached for comment. And the hospital could not discuss the incident without the parents' consent, a spokeswoman said. Raft said he couldn't tell how Rock Sanozier, who attended the hearing via telephone, reacted to the court's decision.

i actually had a debate on this topic the other day. being a parent i couldnt sit there and watch my child suffer and ultimately die because of religious reasons.. science is proven. religion is all faith... times like this makes me sick to my stomach that religion is so accepted.. funny thing is there are americans who condem everyone who is muslim because they belive all muslims are fanatical... well proven fact true followers of the watchtower are fanatics that they'd go as far as letting their own child suffer and die...

Whats really bad is they will sue the state for violating thier religious freedom , i hate Jehovas more than a theif, when they knock on my door i answer in a towel with a beer in my hand, and yes the towel drops when i take the watchtower into my hand which doesnt hold a beer lmfao....

I had a friend in high school of the same religion. When she was 18 she was shot, and she refused a blood transfusion and died. She sure had a great rack.

I really find no difference between this and the Jim Jones suicide cult other than one wants you to drink purple flavor aid and one wants you to refuse a routine medical procedure.  The Bible is a book written in a language which is totally foreign to the WT's translation committee's native languages and for the WT to come up with this convoluted interpretation of the book of Acts is almost akin to 3rd degree murder.

Don't let these people be your idea of a Christian please. Mainstream Christians consider Jehovah's Witnesses to be cult members. No one using the reasoning God gave them would refuse valid medical treatment to a child. If God created the world, he created our ability to make medications, treatments and the like as well. Crackpots tick everyone off!

The command of abstaining from blood was very clear in the Old Testament a question. That being said, I have for JW's; why do Jew's accept Blood Transfusions? They follow the Old Testament to a tee, yet they still value life. I agree that Blood is sacred to God but since when is Blood or the symbol of life more sacred than Life itself? It is foolish man made reasoning. There is an account where King David and his men ate meat from an unbled animal which went against the Mosaic Law, yet they were not punished for this because it was an unusual situation that David and his men were in. In other words God was reasonable enough to know that in an emergency, preserving life took precedence over the law. I find it hypocritical that you do not take the sacredness of life lightly so you avoid alcohol abuse, drugs and smoking and do not engage in dangerous sports such as skydiving etc. Yet when it comes to blood you all act so recklessly. If you want to sacrifice your own life for a twisted doctrine-go ahead! But how dare you murder innocent children due to your warped sense of self righteousness-hypocrites!

Starting in 1945, the WatchTower Society has since refused to permit Jehovah's Witnesses to accept blood transfusions. Misinterpreting the Old Testament prohibition against eating animal blood as a routine food item, the WatchTower Society began teaching in 1945 that receiving a blood transfusion was "eating human blood". Jehovah's Witnesses believe that receiving an infusion of human blood into their body's circulatory system is scientifically the exact same thing as eating or ingesting blood into their body's digestive system.

"A patient in the hospital maybe fed through the mouth, through the nose, or through the veins. When sugar solutions are given intravenously it is called intravenous feeding. So the hospital's own terminology recognizes as feeding the process of putting nutrition into one's system via the veins. Hence the attendant administering the transfusion is feeding the patient through the veins, and the patient receiving it is eating through his veins." -- The WATCHTOWER magazine, July 1, 1951.

Jehovah's Witnesses refuse to acknowledge that when human blood is transfused into their body's circulatory system that the transfused human blood remains to be human blood and continues to function as human blood. Jehovah's Witnesses refuse to acknowledge that if blood is eaten, then the ingested blood enters the body's digestive system, where the blood would be treated by the body exactly the same as it would treat a hotdog, a potato chip, or any other food item. Ingested blood would be completely digested and broken down into proteins, carbohydrates, fats, and waste; which are then either assimilated or excreted by the body.

The WatchTower Society uses scriptures which speak about the blood of slaughtered animals to teach Jehovah's Witnesses that blood is "sacred" because blood is the "symbol of life". Then, the WatchTower Society turns around and requires Jehovah's Witnesses to sacrifice their own "life" to maintain the alleged "sacredness" of a "symbol" of the very thing they are sacrificing -- their life. Jehovah's Witnesses refuse to acknowledge that the WatchTower doctrine on blood moronically places a higher value on the SYMBOL than it does on the THING SYMBOLIZED.

In fact, the Old Testament scriptures permitted the eating of unbled animal meat, which the Bible equates as eating animal blood directly. In isolated occasions, when humans needed to eat unbled meat in order to sustain their own human life, the Mosaic Law permitted such, but then required the eaters to fulfill the requirements of being "unclean" for a few days. Thus, the Bible recognized that the sustaining of human life was more "sacred" than maintaining the sacredness of animal blood. To do otherwise would be doing exactly what the moronic WatchTower Society does. It would make the SYMBOL more SACRED than the THING SYMBOLIZED.

In fact, the WatchTower Society is leading Jehovah's Witnesses to disobey GOD and violate the Holy Scriptures in one of the most serious ways possible. Because humans were created in GOD's image, GOD considers human life sacred. A Jehovah's Witness who sacrifices their SACRED LIFE in order to maintain the sacredness of a SYMBOL of that SACRED LIFE varies little from those who profane life by committing suicide. Those Jehovah's Witness Elders who teach and police this moronic doctrine vary little from common accessories to murder. The Bible is fairly clear in how GOD views murder, and how He deals with murderers.

This moronic twisting of scripture would be laughable if not for the fact that it has lead to the pointless deaths of numerous Jehovah's Witnesses in the past, and it will continue to lead to the pointless deaths of many more Jehovah's Witnesses in the future.

Your blog puts out a false statement.  I doubt very seriously that any transfusion of blood could cause changes in personality.  That is certainly NOT why we object to the procedure.  We do so from obedience to Jehovah God.  When Man was first allowed to eat meat after Noah came out of the Ark.  Under the Mosaic Law. As one of three things the Gentiles had to do to be accepted as Christians.  All these times was when God's prohibition of consuming blood was repeated.  (Gen. 9:1-4; Lev. 3:17; Acts 15:18-19, 28-29)  There is no difference between drinking it or putting it directly in our veins.

If you obey God, you must really obey him.  His laws do not cause harm. Those doctors can only give one their estimated guess as to what will happen.  We do know that if we obey Jehovah God in all things, even if we die, he can restore us to life.  That no doctor could ever do.

This stand on blood is import to all of Jehovahs children.  Blood is what sustains our lives, if it were not so important than Jesus Christ Ransom is not valid!  Brothers and Sisters of truth, keep your faith and love for Jehovah, there is only one Jehovah, one Jesus Christ, one Holy Spirit, and one Bible cannon, Love your farther, let it speak for our Lords Ransom and our future will be secure.  Remember what the bible teaches, the Holy Spirit is now teaching us, we are born imperfect and it is impossible for us to follow the letter of the law but it is the Spirit of the Law that will save us and all of Jehovah children who Love him.  It is out of compassion that sin is thrown in to the sea.  Pray and have compassion for one another.

Danny,

You complain elsewhere that you shouldn’thave been excommunicated for "simply" disagreeing with the tenets of the Jehovah Witnessfaith and were improperly shunned because you are not apostate, please considerthe definition of apostate:

apostate

mid-14c., "one who forsakes hisreligion or faith," from L.L. apostata , from Gk. apostasia "defection, desertion, rebellion," from apostenai "to defect," lit. "to stand off," from apo- "awayfrom" (see apo-) + stenai "to stand."

I understand you are upset, butaccept yourself for what you are; you are an apostate (by definition) of thewitness faith.

So what, move on, what's depressing aboutyour posts, (on any site that mentions Jehovah's name) is that you offer nosolutions, no answers, merely venomous attacks. If you believe in god, then youknow that if they are truly espousing false teachings and false claims ofdivine backing, ultimately they will come to nothing, (Acts 5:35-39).

In themeantime, how about something a little more constructive than your tiresomedemagoguery?

No offense to a Jehovah Witness that is reading this now...but, your religion is no rightful one if you think dying with honour with the medical treatment you need is worth it. If my child or husband needed a blood transfusion, I'd give it to them without any further excuses, because they deserve to live. The doctors did what is right and that boy deserves to live life regardless of what an stupid wise elder might say or yell to them -- the elders at your church does not know him and his parents should be proud! WITHOUT your NWT bible, tell me why it's bad to undergo a blood transfusion that could save lives?

Gen 9 and lev 9 forbade the eating of blood forshadowing the need for christ offering his blood permanently. Now that Christ had died there was no need to abstain from blood anymore.Paul said at 1 Cor 10: 25-33 christians could eat strangled meat.Acts 15 and Acts 21 was a temporary instruction only in order to help Jewish converts to christianity who were still unfortunally wanting to keep to the Mosaic law.Wants they had grown to maturity they would understand they now could eat strangled meat with blood inside. Now that we can eat blood the extentsion is we can have a blood transfusion.

Having been reared as a 4th generation Jehovah's Witness, I remember white Jehovah's Witness Parents, Pete aand Dorothy Blackford (both deceased), lamenting the fact that their son was marrying an African-American. They blamed his pick of a different race spouse on the fact that a blood transfusion had been forced on him at birth. They said that they had always wondered why he had always "liked" African-Americans since he was a child, and given his choice of a wife, they now "knew" that he must have been given blood from an African-American.

The WT Society and Jehovah's Witnesses are a MAN-originating, men-run, high controlling religious cult-like institution, rather than what they tell people they are (God's appointed Channel/Organization/People nonsense).

The facts prove without a doubt that God was never behind any of this:

http://home.tiscali.nl/t661020...

ALL FROM THEIR OWN LITERATURE WITH DATES AND PAGES TO SEE FOR YOURSELVES!!!

We got False End of the World Predictions all over the place, medical disasterous policies - FORCED on JW's at risk of extreme shunning.

We got flip flops, blinking lights, wacky science, historical failures, arrogance, judging other religions and people of those religions and LOADS of WT Society embarrassments and humiliations throughout their entire 100+ year history!

God had nothing to do with all that nonsense that was called, "Food from God" by all JW's even down to this day.

It was WRONG when it first came off the presses!

So why are some today opposed to Jehovah's Witness and their policies?

DEAD PEOPLE is why.

RUINED LIVES is why.

FALSE PROPHECIES is why.

An arrogant, controlling Religious Institution is why.

They are WRONG ON BLOOD TODAY (for 68 years now).

They are WRONG ON SHUNNING those that simply walk away from the JW religion today. (nowhere in bible)

They are WRONG 607 BCE and 1914.

They were WRONG ABOUT FORBIDDING Vaccinations, Organ Transplants, Alternative Service and much more.

They were wrong on ALL OF THEIR End of World Predictions in writing. Wrong on marital infidelity rules, rape rules, beards, 1935, Beth Sarim and too many things to bother listing here.

Did ((( GOD ))) make all of these terrible decisions to force on all the JW's as "food at the proper time", and then change his mind later on?

Or was is just a bunch of MEN, that make up the Governing Body of Jehovah's Witnesses (sitting up in some Brooklyn office somewhere) making these poor decisions, FORCING them on all JW's and then afterwards conveniently change their mind?

Does God serve Bad Food like this?

Perhaps He is not a very good cook?

Shunning people for disagreements is NOT scriptural!

Shunning people for walking away from the JW faith is NOT scriptural!

This is a CONTROL mechanism. And it often works. It is a gross misapplication of scripture to keep the average JW towing the line.

THERE IS A BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN UNITY AND FORCED UNIFORMITY.

Jw's are not allowed to even THINK differently.

I WAS a JW, and an elder as well, until recently in 2006 when I walked away. I am very familiar with how they are actually WORSE than most other faiths today. I am shunned for walking away. People today and for the last 80 years have died, without reason, due to the WT medical policies forced on all JW's.

Each week is filled with a list of JW obligations that basically OWN YOU. You are told what you can read, what movies are acceptable, what association is acceptable, what facial hair is okay. What you can celebrate and cannot. What words you are allowed to use.

What is allowed in your own bedroom with your wife. And too many other things to list here again. Before knowing all the facts and believing they were God's True Channel, one can go a very long way to justify all of these things. Take away that one true faith belief and so falls the rest.

I have been there and done all that.

JW's are told they cannot take blood transfusions in situations where they might need one (such as through accidents or complications with surgery, pregnancy or child birth).

So, naturally, more JW's will die.

Just like this mother died unnecessarily!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_...

And now her husband has no wife and her two new twins have no mother.

And all for what?

Or this teenager that also DIED: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_...

This is very simple. JW's NEEDLESSLY die for this sorry blood policy today.

From the same organization that has an entire 100 + year history of similar bad and embarrasing policies.

This is why I suggest to anybody thinking of becoming a JW ... to READ READ AND READ UP ON THIS RELIGION FIRST!

The proof will clearly stand out that the JW faith is not what they try to tell people they are!

The facts are Irrefutable.

And in the end, you only show how pitiful and ignorant you really are. So I ask, whose the person with the issues? The one who, for right or wrong reasons is acting on his sincere beliefs that he is doing right in imitation of what Jesus and what Jesus commanded those who are his true disciples to do or you, an intelligent human being supposedly with some sense of values who would be willing to expose themselves to strangers? What type of person are you, really? And no we won't sue the state for frivolous and unwarranted reasons. As for 1Corinthians, Paul said go ahead and eat strangled meat, as long as you don'tknow for a fact that it is strangled meat, in which case, do not eat it, read the scripture.

Also, ifActs 15 and 21 were only temporary requirements to ease the transition fromJewish to Christian faiths, then the prohibitions against fornication and theinsistence on circumcision, things to be abstained from in addition to blood, have also sinceexpired. By your reasoning the only true "Christians" would be circumcised, habitual fornicators, with a penchant for food sacrificed to idols.

Which come to think of it, sounds about right.

Michelle if that were the case then why is 1st century history full of accounts whereby faithful Christians were willing to die in the gladiator arena's rather than violate their Christian faith? Burn incense to the emperor or die, they were told. Men, women and children choose to be torn apart in the arena's rather than turn their back on their faith. All they had to do was turn their back on what they believe. In a similar vein how different is it for soldiers who die in support of their countries by the millions because of what they believe? In other words people of faith who really believe in what they believe in, seem to hold to the thinking that if a certain faith isn't worth dying for, it certainly isn't worth living for. Jehovah's Witnesses exemplify this. Not a one of us want to die but if it is our faith that even death can be conquered even if it is by means of the resurrection, then so be it. What do you believe in so strongly that you would die for? What did Jesus believe in so strongly that he DID die for?

Or perhaps ma'am you simply lack an understanding of what the Bible teaches as to why God would take anyone from the earth to be in heaven in the first place. And yes you are entitled to your opinion but that does not make it right. It only makes it your opinion and with eternal life prospects being at stake I'd prefer to go on much more than opinion. You read the same scripture out of context multiple times.  Reading it in context, it seems as though you're not supposed to drink blood or eat meat that's prepared as a sacrifice to idols.  It really wouldn't say anything about a legalistic refusal of medical help, since in other biblical passages, the concept for leniency during extraordinary circumstances is not foreign.    Read this link.     http://translate.google.com/tr...
