Sen. Jim Waldman's Criminal Buddy Back in Hot Water

waldmanhertz.jpg
The amazing Hertz, left, partying with Sen. Waldman before he went to prison.

From Medicare fraud to the foreclosure mess, Brad Hertz seems to bring trouble wherever he goes.

After Hertz, a very close friend and business associate of Democratic state Sen. Jim Waldman, got out of federal prison for ripping off Medicare, he went to work to "rescue" homeowners in trouble with their mortgages. But numerous complaints filed by his customers allege that Hertz, with his "Home Rescue Foundation," instead took their money -- and their houses. Read the Sun-Sentinel story here

Waldman was the registered agent for the Hertz company that defrauded Medicare of $7 million but was never implicated in any wrongdoing. According to the feds, Hertz wrongfully billed the government for boat trips, parties, and other personal perks.

Hertz's fraudulent activity never bothered Waldman, who helped throw his friend a going-away party before Hertz checked into the
federal pen to serve his one-year sentence. I spoke to Waldman about his friend back in 2006.

"Brad Hertz has been a personal friend of mine for years, and the fact that he pled guilty doesn't necessarily mean that he was guilty," he said. "Brad Hertz is somebody who paid his debt to society, and he should be afforded all the rights a person has in that society."

Unfortunately, Hertz was given those rights in spades, which leads to the question: How is a convicted fraud artist allowed to take homeowners' money in the first place? This guy never should have been approved a business license after defrauding Medicare.

Waldman and Hertz have been in business together in the past; it doesn't appear the senator has any involvement in the current mess.

Career criminals sometimes have a fall-back position previously created and put into practice, even in absentia. Subordinated debentures are not the adventures.

Were Waldman an R instead of a D this column would now be filled with comment after comment after comment about how ALL Rs are greedy, dishonest, disgusting pigs. I will NOT stoop that low where Ds are concerned, as two wrongs do not make a right.

I wonder what Parkland Man thinks about this article. Who is helping all of these people who were defrauded by this convicted felon?

Attorneys.

How is that clouded lens that you view the world through doing now? Are all attorneys still bad, even the ones that are helping these people that were defrauded?

You may be a great guy, but your ignorance on this issue, which you display constantly, is palpable.

Jim Waldman is a State Representative, not a State Senator.

"The fact that he plead guilty doesn't necessarily mean that he was guilty".

Huh? Would someone translate that for me into English? My head hurts.

Reminds me of another classic.

He's buried at an undisclosed location at sea within 12 hours of his death??? Hell, the press showed all sorts of pictures of Saddam & Sons bodies before they were buried but somehow no pics of Bin Laden before being rushed to a watery grave??? I would want to see the death certificate too.

It may be that the remains looked really bad -- guts splatted all over the place, gaping, screaming mouth festooned with bits of brain. With a template like that, imagine what would happen to the next one of our guys who got caught. I don't have a problem with the watery grave, either. This way supporters of the deceased can't throng the area; entrepreneurs can't prey on the credulous by selling vials of dirt; the Pakistanis don't get their own private pilgrimage site.

Let's hope, because we're all ready to follow him at WPLG and not lose the openess and community we have on the New Times blogs.

That's awesome, ATG. Thank you so much.

You know I'm too addicted to not follow the WPLG blog and the New Times too. I hope the WPLG format allows the level of participation that has fostered the sense of community that the New Times has. I'm sure they want to make the most of their investment in Bob Norman and will be open to change.
