Rush Limbaugh Digs Obama

"Thank God for President Obama!"
His most devout fans insist it's sarcasm, but it's not: Palm Beach's loudest gazillionaire began his Monday radio broadcast with breathless, effusive, totally over-the-top, and completely sincere praise of President Obama. (See the video after the jump.)

Said Limbaugh:

Ladies and gentlemen, we need to open the program today by congratulating President Obama. President Obama has done something extremely effective, and when he does, this needs to be pointed out. President Obama has continued the Bush policies of keeping a military presence in the Middle East. He did not scrub the mission to get Bin Laden. In fact, it may be that President Obama single-handedly came up with the technique in order to pull this off. You see, the military wanted to go in there and bomb like they always do; they wanted to go in there and drop missiles, launch bombs, a number a number of totally destructive, uh, techniques here. But President Obama, perhaps the only qualified member in the room to deal with this, insisted on the special forces...
Our military wanted to go in there and just scorch the Earth, leaving no evidence of anything after the mission. But President Obama single-handedly understood what was at stake here. He alone understood the need to get DNA. To prove the death. Obama alone understood the aftermath; he alone understood that there would be doubting Thomases, if the place was just obliterated and no evidence was to be found. Not one member of the United -- well, according to news reports -- not one member of the military, not Gen. Petraues, nobody in the intel community, nobody had the slightest idea of going in there and using special forces. It was President Obama, single-handedly and alone, who came up with the strategy that brought about the effective assassination of Osama Bin Laden.

Now, I'm not sure what "news reports" Limbaugh's been reading that claim Obama single-handedly masterminded every aspect of the effort to kill Bin Laden, but I'm sure his reelection campaign appreciates the hyperbole.

Let's not forget that it was Rush and his ilk that got us into this situation. He/They focused so much attention on Bill Clinton's sex life that efforts to eliminate Bin Laden (before 9/11 even happened) were scrapped.

Not only does Rush owe Obama a hearty "well done", he owes us all a giant "mea culpa". I'm not holding my breath.

If you listen to the whole program, you'll understand that Rush was speaking a bit tongue-in-cheek. He's really "tweaking" the media, playing off a long running theme that the media considers President Obama to be a messiah, that he's the "smartest man in the room" (a common phrase Rush uses to mean that the media is in love with Obama and thus biased towards him). That's why when Rush says "according to news reports" it is so important, because he is saying that the media is over-hyping Obama's influence and wisdom in this case and simultaneously downcasting the wisdom of our armed forces leaders. Additionally, Rush is praising president Bush and throwing the general principles of the left wing movement back at them (particularly, anti-War, anti-Gitmo, anti-interrogation, etc) because in order to get the job done, Obama had to follow right wing policy, rather than left wing policy. Ultimately, at the core, Rush is using this moment to either convince the left wing to abandon their anti-war leanings, or if not, reduce their support of Obama who is not putting those policies to action.
