Broward Republican Party's Chief Sponsors Are Democrats

gopbroward.jpg

The Broward Republican Party is holding its "Grand Old Party BBQ" at Ronald Bergeron's ranch next month.

Bergeron, a developer, has become more and more involved with the GOP recently, sponsoring just about everything it's been doing, from the recent Lincoln dinner to the party's website. Listed alongside his name on all these things is fellow Broward land baron (and noted donkey farmer) Austin Forman (whose last name the Republicans habitually misspell "Foreman"). Here's how the party thanks those guys on the website and invitations:

gopsponsors.jpg
You can see that Bergeron, Forman, and Forman's partner Bill Murphy, are specially named (and of course billionaire Wayne Huizenga is featured).

But here's the thing: Bergeron and Forman are both registered Democrats, who between them have given money to the likes of Hillary Clinton, Ted Kennedy, Ron Klein, Ted Deutch, and too many more fellow party members to name. To the Democratic Party itself, they donated tens of thousands of dollars between them.

If you find that to be crazy, you probably shouldn't. This is Broward County after all and Bergeron and Forman are really loyal to only one party:

Bergeron at his ranch
the Green Party, as in cash. Both of these guys make big contributions to local politicians regardless of ideology and ultimately they expect a lot from them in return, usually involving tax dollars, zoning approvals, public contracts and the like.

Forman, the in recent years has given campaign dollars to everyone from Hillary Clinton to Allen West. Bergeron was one of former Republican Charlie Crist's chief supporters, but that didn't stop him from contributing generously to Democrat Kendrick Meek's Senatorial run as well.

Of course it's about influence rather than party, but it ought to be a little embarrassing for the local GOP when it's sponsored by a couple of multimillionaires who are officially on the other guys' team.

ADDED: You have said below that it's actually embarrassing for the Democrats and Mitch Ceasar. You're right. But the more I think about it, it's embarrassing for the system because it just shows once again that the same big money interests control both parties.

And the SWR Detention Center is just another payout for Bergeron... Is Broward County actually Bergeron County? And we're just livin' in it???

bob ,

If we are talking political influence what about Bill Scherer? I just was at the court house parking lot , where Smoker Park is, next to the old theater and it looks like good old Bill Scherer and his son's company Gulf Building are developing this land. Do you know anything about this? Is it tax dollars that will be developing this land that was suppose to be a park? Did Bill Scherer (who is an officer of Gulf building bid on this with his son and use his influence)?

Hey Bob, I looked at the party website...one out of four tabs are Dems. That's 25%. So 75% of the "Chief Sponsors" are supposedly Republicans. Should probably title the article "Some of Broward Republican Party's Chief Sponsors are Democrats."

This says alot about the Republicans in the county. From what I understand this Republican Chairman goes around boasting that he is making things happen for the Republicans. I guess this is true, but using Democrats to help him meet his goals. Any I also heard him the other day on the Cefalo show, what a tool. At least stand up for yourself, this guy just bent over and took it from Mitch. Thank god we have weak Republicans like this guy here in Broward, makes Democrats jobs easier.

Hey Javier Manjarres, we know you like to attack the Republicans in Broward County...how about attacking some Democrats for a change. You are the tool. Get a life.

I think Chip Lamarca should stay as far away from Moratis, Lamberti, esp. I mean Congressman West i am cautiously optimistic. As far as Moratis(Mr. money bags) what has he done for us here in Ft.Lau??. Answer nothing. His big-money and family values(joke) got him elected. again he has done nothing but endorse the Right's agenda(abortion, denying voting rights for previous felons, harassing the Unions etc). where's the emphasis on job creation, etc. Total fraud. And Sheriff lamberti's a total mess.Comm.Larmarca run, run from these above mentioned.

I will stand shoulder-to-shoulder in support of George Moraitis anywhere, anytime!

Just pay everyone. It's called hedging your bet.

P.S. Put a shirt on Ronnie.

Embarrassing? These characters have no shame so there's nothing for them to be embarrassed about. Selling overpriced, potentially environmentally hazardous land to Davie. Check. Having the Governor on speed dial to help land big public works projects. Check. Inviting mayors, commissioners, and other various Broward County public officials to feast on your finest meat, cheeses, and wines so they all feel like your "helpful" friend. Check. Having your shirtless photo taken while gloriously riding your ATV while flaunting your man boobs & hairy back. Check, yet again!

Sorry Bob, but must dissent here. I like seeing more people support the candidates than the party. Partisan politics is destructive and will lead this country down the wrong path, whether it's the Dems or the Repubs.

Shouldn't this be "embarassing" for Mitch Caesar, who can't even corral members of his own party to not support the other side?

Here's an interesting bit to consider: It seems that the Don Prichard issue is getting serious attention in Tallahassee. The CJSTC (Standards Board) kept hammering the Sheriff to send up the complete file because of the articles in the local S. FL Times and the blogs. Finally this was done when the CJSTC threatened Lamberti himself with disciplinary action if he did not comply with the statute. So now, BSO has hired lawyer Tom Panza to "defend" DP. Doesn't this seem odd that the same agency that punished DP is now using taxpayer money to defend him in a hearing to consider what should have been considered years ago if BSO had complied with the law? Isn't it also odd that BSO (read Lamberti) should choose Tom Panza who was paid a million dollars by Ken Jenne to gloss over the phony clearance rate problem several years ago? Why would AL do that? Conclusion: DP is a personal issue with Lamberti and he wants Panza because he has always been plugged in with Tallahassee politics. AL is buying Big Tom to sway the CJSTC. Let's not forget that someone from Admin. already been calling up there to peddle influence and some think it was Wheeler. Of course he never had juice so now our money has to be spent on Panza. The above information is true and I will be interested in reading the usual detractors and milk sops who will stupidly assume I am an Israel supporter and otherwise stupidly try to discount this info. But here it is and it is dead on. How about a full and official reply from Lamberti himself so it can be double checked? Fair enough?

It's all about access and influence; it has nothing to do with supporting one party's or the other's platform/principles. And that should tell us all something about the kinds of people who speak with money out of both sides of their mouths.

Thanks for the free advertising. Hope to see you at the BBQ.

It's no different than someone like Ari Porth helping to get republican bills passed in Tallahassee. He co sponsors stuff all the time with Bogdanoff who is definitely a republican. She knows how to use him and he falls right in line. He even endorsed some republicans in local elections. So people cross party lines all the time to get what they need. $$$

If the money is green, why not take it?

Besides, there was a Republican Party function at the Bergeron Ranch back in 2009. Also, Ron Book has donated to the Republicans in the past. Big Whoop.

Does this mean that Allen West is not the principled hardcore conservative that the teabbaggers thought he was when they collectively drooled all over him in November?Yesterday, West declared that we should pull out of Afghanistan and gave Obama credit for the operation which led to the killing of Bin Laden. Now, he appears to be positioning himself to accept money from the enemy.

Would a true Spartan accept money from Democratic party supporters?

Hey, moron, this is a BREC event and not West event. Are you lacking reading comprehension as well as common sense ? Put down the pipe and step away from it.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Way to go.

Maybe, just maybe, he's able to look at what's best for America and willing to give credit where it's due. It would be easier to attack him if he was one of the idiots doubting Osama is dead. He does the right thing and gives credit to Obama - attack him anyway.

It's amazing how those tea partiers (apparently all by themselves) managed to get West elected in a general election in a Democratic county.

Just pointing out that now that West has been in D.C. for some time, and by his own admission has spent an inordinate amount of time reading, it appears that he is toning down all the crazy talk.

In fact, I would posit that he will become much more moderate in his tone and language over the next year as he realizes that the demographics for an election held during a Presidential year are quite different than during a midterm.

Despite my sarcasm, I give him credit for what appears to be a move away from the fringe right/white trash movement.

Embarassing? More like awesome! Kudos to the local Republicans for getting even the Dems to contribute to them!
