South Florida Needs a SlutWalk!

• This is dumb. I'd like to see the statistics on what a person wears and the instances of rape. There may actually be a link. This article does no homework on that. I know that dressing up like sexual candy isn't consent, but it does draw attention that may be unwanted and you ought to think about that. This is BS disguised as "progress".

• It sounds like you want exposed skin to constitute tacit consent. This argument falls apart rather quickly because a pedophile could not justify raping a baby by saying "they were only wearing a diaper: they were asking for it." Your hypothetical sign that says "free stuff" constitutes consent in your example. People's bodies don't have locks or doors so instead we have concepts like "consent". To account for this fundamental difference between bodies and houses I'll use a more pertinent example: you can consent to a doctor cutting out your tonsils but if they also cut out your kidney while you are sedated without your prior consent, you would be the victim of a crime and your surgeon would be the perpetrator. The surgeon wouldn't be able to say it was your fault for having a kidney or that they did no harm by taking it since you probably have two.

• Next time your house is broken into, tell your insurance company that you put a sign on the front lawn that said "free stuff inside" and left the door wide open, then got drunk and passed out. See how well they react to your claim of "my stuff was stolen".

• Are you saying when she's raped that it's her fault for having a hole between her legs? Newsflash: your argument lacks intellectual integrity. It's still the thief's fault for being a thief and the rapist's fault for being a rapist. Stop blaming the victim.

• As a former detective here in South Florida, I will tell you that a great majority of sex crimes are of the date rape/familial relationship variety and the clothing a person is wearing has nothing to do with the crime. The "boogie man" rapist that grabs a girl/woman off of the street and brutally rapes her is uncommon and when one occurs, the police break out all of the stops to solve the crime quickly. I think real tips for avoiding a sex crime would be to WATCH YOUR DRINKS at a party/club... Background check and know those you date. Communicate up front about "NO MEANS NO" Do it in normal conversation by telling a story about a "friend" who was date raped. Make it clear you would prosecute the bastard to the fullest extent of the law. These tips are not like telling a person who's home was just robbed "Dont live in a nice house" its like telling that person to lock the door. Two more things... If you feel uncomfortable in a situation... LEAVE, CALL A FRIEND, GET ON THE PHONE WITH SOMEONE, POLICE ANYONE.... Secondly, If you are victimized... That is you say no and he doesn't stop (even if there's no penetration)... Report it to the police immediately, dont shower, preserve as much evidence of the attack as possible. Just my .02 and what I teach my teenaged daughter.

• That is so true. Its always been Girls dont go out late at night, Girls dont wear this. Like Men raping women are simply weak and therefore excusable. I would proudly walk with them. Wish FIU would do this too.

• I am a victim of rape and have NEVER dressed as a "slut". If a man has rape on his mind, the way a woman dresses isn't going to be the deciding factor in whether he goes through with it or not. I don't like revealing clothing on women no matter how nice her body may be. Dressing to show off your body is a "cheap" act, but it still doesn't give anyone the right to take what hasn't been given to them.
