Sheriff's "Regret": A Step in the Right Direction

Here's the full text of Sheriff Al Lamberti's statement in which he apologizes to Judge Ilona Holmes:

"This past Sunday the Broward Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a home burglary in progress from a concerned citizen who provided incorrect information regarding the home address. On scene, the deputies continued to receive incorrect information from the citizen and, based upon this information, believed they were at the correct address.

A report of a burglary in progress at a residence is an extremely dangerous and tense situation for law enforcement, which requires an assertive response. The Broward Sheriff's Office is evaluating the circumstances of this incident to ensure that appropriate response procedures were followed.

We deeply regret that Judge Holmes and her family went through this experience and understand that this incident, resulting from a series of unfortunate events, may have been traumatic for them."

How about "was traumatic for them," Al. Couldn't take that leap?

It's really not quite an apology, but the sheriff's "deep regret" at least acknowledges an ounce of contrition. Let's hope they really do look at what happened here -- because the fact is that the raid was nonsensical. Not only was the proper location of the house miscommunicated between the neighbor and deputies but the lead officer had seen that a man was casually doing dishes in the kitchen of the home before all the gunplay occurred. That should have really lessened the need for such an "assertive response." The whole thing made no sense. If nothing else, this story should serve as a reminder for all law enforcement officers -- not just those involved in the incident -- to make damned sure they aren't engaging in folly before they aim guns at a family and treat them like criminals when all they've done is enjoy Easter dinner.

Hmmmmmmmm let's see. Uniformed police show up at the house, and the judge exits the house gun in hand. Did the judge apoligise to the officers, and thank them for not blowing her head of?

Bob, please call Sheriff Al on Monday and ask who is the assigned IAD investigator to the active Dave Benjamin investigation. The good Sheriff should be able to give you a simple name. You won't get it because their is no investigation.

Now, where's the judges apology for "acting elitist " and not obeying the lawful commands of the deputies. Bob, ask anyone with a smattering of knowledge and the deputies would have been well within their rights to fire upon her for not dropping the weapon. Where is the judges apology for not speaking with the White Chief, because the African American was not qualified nor selected for the position. Al, apologized for one reason, votes, sad but true...Karma never, ever forgets, now go soak your feet.

If Mark Nurik, Esq. was the victim, his primary complaint wouldn't be that BSO stormed into his home and pointed a firearm at him.

He'd be complaining that the freakin' dishwasher was broken.

(A little insider joke for the veteran Pulparazzi)

Get rid of de Jesus!
Get rid of de Jesus!

What is traumatic is the fact that Sheriff Al LamDirty has hired ex-Cooper City Commissioner Neal de Jesus as his Fire Chief, ahead of the others much better qualified. De Jesus really fucked up Cooper City, now he's looking to fuck up BSO Fire Rescue, and has already done so in regards to the Davie and Southwest ranches fire contract! get rid of this ahole Al!

All this is true. I also want to unequivaly state that the pecan pie we devoured while at the scene was very tastey.

Mommy is so happy that all her children at this burglary call ended up unhurt. Now both sides should grow up and feel the same way. Play nice children it was a Godly holiday, people were scared, but no one hurt. Thank you God for that. Now move on to the bad people.

Does anyone really suppose that such an 'explanation' would be forthcoming for any family that didn't boast a sitting judge as a member?

Anybody else -- white, black, brown, green -- would receive the standard stone wall response: "We were doing our job. Our deputies responded appropriately. If you don't like it, TOUGH!"

Bob why don't you leave propper law enforcement response to the professionals and we won't tell you how to write. Until YOU walk in their shoes and deal with armed criminals you really don't have a clue to what you are talking about other than a knee jerked liberal. It is nice to criticize safely behind your computer but spend some time on the streets and we'll talk.

You are right he is a political apointee and not selected for his fire service. He was a chief at Coral Gables they have 3 fire houses... BSO has 13 not to mention regional / Haz-mat / air rescue etc. Bring back Lanza a true fire professional.

The burglar was Alcee Hasting or Brenda Snipes take you pick.

Cop

It would never have happened. The cops would have knocked on the door and said they had a report of a burglary in progress and asked if everything was okay. Then they would have asked permission to come into the house to make sure everything was okay. They then would have asked to speak to the owner of the house and asked him to produce his ID. Then they would have left. I'm postive once they saw they weren't dealing with kids or gang bangers they would left.

You all need to cut the nonsense. There is adsolutly no reason to force your way into the house under these circumstances with your guns drawn and pointing at the occupants.

"Armed criminals?" You mean "armed" as in a folded dishtowel on his arm? Law enforcement professionals we respect. BSO political hacks we do not.
