Rick Scott's Legal Defense of High-Speed Rail Rejection Was Based on a Lie

Charles Trippe, Scott's fact-fudging lawyer.
Incredible news came out of Tallahassee last week: Rick Scott's general counsel admitted that he had misled the Florida Supreme Court about the amount of money that had already been spent on the proposed high-speed rail corridor, making the remaining funds seem much lower than they were, so that Scott's rejection of the plan would not appear so drastic.

Scott's counsel, Charles Trippe, revealed in a two-page letter to Chief Justice Charles Canady on Thursday that he falsely told the court that $110 million of a proposed $130 million in state funding for the project (spending that would complement federal funds and had been approved in 2009) had already been spent. The real amount spent? $31 million.

The court had been looking at a lawsuit from
two senators who said Scott exceeded his constitutional authority when he blocked the rail project last month.

Given Trippe's false numbers, the court acknowledged that there was "very limited to no factual record" to verify them. Still, they were convincing enough. The Palm Beach Post's John Kennedy takes it from here:

...in a terse, one-page ruling, justices quickly killed the lawsuit following the hearing. They seemed to rely heavily on the facts of the project, as presented by Trippe -- who now acknowledges he was wrong.

In its ruling, the court wrote, "Based on the limited record before the court and a review of the federal and state law relied on by the parties, the court has determined that the petitioners have not clearly demonstrated entitlement to... relief."

Thad Altman, one of the senators who sued Scott, says he might file for a rehearing based on the admission of phony stats.

Our homework for this week: Get a copy of Trippe's letter and find out whether he deserves to keep his high-ranking job as Rick Scott's numero-uno legal counsel. Now Scott's claim that his rejection of high-speed rail helped solve the budget crisis seems even dumber than it did before.

I believe Mr. Trippe may have been functioning as an "officer of the court" in this particular case. The generic "officer of the court" has ethical, judicial, and financial obligations. In this case, Mr Trippe has admitted perjury, likely because he thinks he can get away with it in newly GOP-valued Florida.

He clearly violated any imaginable level of ethical obligations, even in Florida, and may have violated some financial obligations as well.

The common name for these people, once indicted and convicted, is felon.

Of course he deserves to keep his job. When you have rotten fruit at the top, it is only fitting that those below you stink to high heaven as well. Scott bought his way to the governorship and will now spend the next four years trying to enact legislation which will directly pay back the money he spent on getting elected. I've said it before and I'll say it again: A man who takes the Fifth Amendment some 72 times to avoid getting indicted belongs in the big house, not the state house. He is a blight and an embarrassment to this State -- as are the 50 percent of voters in this state who voted for him -- because it is clear they would vote for a potted plant if it had an (R) after it. With apologies to potted plants.

Miami recalled the mayor in a forced recall election, why don't outraged Floridians start a RECALL THE GOVERNOR effort, seems logical to me or was he able to block that legal right? The wole Rick Scott debacle makes me happy I moved out of state before he was inagurated.

Rick Scott has been lying from the beginning, why voters didn't see this is beyond understanding. Yes Trippe should lose his job and we need to impeach Rick Scott as soon as possible. If not, the whole state and all those looking for jobs are in big trouble. It is almost as if he hates Florida and it's citizens and wants us all to move away! Well, Mr. Scott, we ain't leavin' Paradise, so you better sit up and pay attention.

does not matter is correct.

when you look closely at the distance and the time saved, its not that much... and who would pay 50 bucks to save 30 minutes, then need a ride from the station.

this assumes free (ha) parking! and 50bucks one way.

now when you look a the miami orlando, and say for a family of 4, it really does not make any sense.

then you future its going to loose money FOREVER, so we will all be paying for this most likely failure.

its cheaper to give each person a free bus ticket. than build and maintain it. -really.

It doesn't matter. The trains location was a thoughtless idea with no Maximum Benefit for the buck. This high-speed rail was truly a lazy approach. Drive to the location and check it out for yourselves as well.

I'm a long time Floridian and I'm proud of Gov. Scott. He stode up to the Li-Ber-Als and showd them we were independent of the socialist Obama agenda on this railroad system. I can't afford on my pension to foot the bill for tourists who come and go to Disney and trash my state. I wont take it anymore and our Gov is out looking for the people instead of being a communist like I fought in Korean. God bless the governer and if his lawer made some numbers up, thats ok by me if we defeated the godless people and obama and northernors

So far, I have not seen anything truthful come from this grifter that so many voted for, from him or his hacks. Tell me again, why isn't he in federal prison??

Isn't that statement what they call an "oxymoron". Ole scrotumhead Scott lies about everything, so by default his "fraudster king" statements about high speed rail are therefore presumed falsehoods and fabrications. But, maybe the implication is that those particular fudgey wudgey lies were blatantly obvious lies with intent to deceive and deprive Floridians of money, convenience. and jobs. And, wouldn't that be grounds for impeachment by his tea party puppet buddy legisgators. Hmmm, that might be an oxymoron also?

I say Trippe deserves to be indicted on the charge of perjury and sentenced.

because there is nothing in the florida statutes that allows for a recall of the governor...... sadly...... and the republicans in Tally are more interested in keeping power than allowing legislation to move forward that would keep our elected officials in check.....

Damn! I agree with you, Caught me...but don't make fun of Korean War vets...they're from "The Forgotten War" and really still hurt very badly after those terrible years -'50-'53. P.S. Even Country Joe McDonald and the Fish (the anti Vietnam War guy from Woodstock, 1969) know better than to "razz" the "Ranzabars" in our nation. And I was there when Country Joe helped dedicate a Korean War monument in Northern California for those guys and gals. P.S. If you want to trick a real phoney Korean vet, they should know that the answer to the food riddle above is "Kimchee, the national snack of Korea, is too darn hot and sour for most Americans. It's red hot peppers and fermented Napa cabbage!"

You're not exactly a genius, are you Ranzabar?

The entire cost of the project was already allocated. From a tax perspective, it's already been spent! Thanks to your 'hero' Scott, however, it will now be spent in New York, Illinois, California, etc.

So, you didn't save ANYTHING, but now your state won't be getting the 23,000 new jobs that the project would have created. Other states will be getting those. Your state will likewise not be getting the tax revenue from those 23,000 jobs; revenue that would have lowered your taxes, you silly fool!

Your state deserves its suffering. It is self-inflicted.

By the way, enjoy your pension (socialism) and your VA benefits (more socialism).

Are you a Crazy? He STOLE hundreds of millions of dollars from the Govt,,the same one you fought to defend,he is tearing this state apart piece by piece,,and light rail it has been in the works for over 20 years since ,shoot lawson lamar as far back as i can remember. Ask yourself, why would he spend 73 million dollars of his own money to win a 200k a year job?Definantly not to help florida, thats for sure more like use florida to ROB our Governments coffers No offense but both candidates for Governor are crooks, but anyone supporting his messed up agenda is sooo wrong.Kill highspeed rail using false numbers, that could have brought back a tone of construction jobs for many years?Fire our long standing Omsbudsman and replace him with a buddy from the Pharma Industry?Good luck Old folks in FLA yall just got Screwed,,enjoy the higher rates for medical and Meds.Gunna revamp medicare/medicaid in fla, haha good luck old folks your backsides are gunna be hurting.Shoot down the Pill Mill database? Thanks, ranzabar, you totally illustrate the looney tunes tea partiers. Socialist agenda? You're collecting MONEY and receiving FREE MEDICAL BENEFITS as a result of a SOCIALIST AGENDA. It is driveling morons like you that will keep this state as backward as it is. We could have been THE FIRST STATE TO RECEIVE HIGH SPEED RAIL and been a MODEL for the rest of the country, instead of which we have you dribbling around in your Depends undergarments.

If you're a gunuine (sp?) Korean War vet (I really wonder about you) why would you use a Muslim-type name like Ranzabar? And tell me, what is so wrong to Americans about the national side dish of Korea that we can't stand? If you were around it there---no, WHEN you were around it then if you're for real, you'll know the answer. If you are real, then I apologize in advance and thank you for your service, 1950-52 (or later)
