Richard Rubin Pleads Guilty, Faces Likely Prison Term

Richard Rubin, with his attorney David Bogenschutz at his side, was contrite in federal court as he pleaded guilty to a tax evasion charge.

An emotional Rubin, who is the husband of criminally charged former Broward County Commissioner Diana Wasserman-Rubin, admitted to Judge William Zloch that he knowingly failed to report more than $100,000 in real estate commissions -- the bulk of it coming from a land deal he brokered for the Town of Davie in 2004.

Rubin, 65, said in court that he and his wife faced financial burdens from damage done to their home by Hurricane Wilma and also owed on a loan he could not repay, prompting his decision to cheat the government.

Wasserman-Rubin was not present in court with her husband.

The question: How did the couple blow through the million dollars Rubin was paid by Southwest Ranches so fast?

Rubin is scheduled to be sentenced on June 29 and faces a $250,000 fine and a maximum of five years in prison. Sentencing guidelines, however, call for ten to 16 months behind bars.

Isn't Richard Rubin's wife (former Broward County DEMOCRAT Commissioner Diana Wassermann-Rubin) the DEMOCRAT who's been charged with seven counts of felony unlawful compensation related to her votes for her husband’s grant-writing? And, wouldn't that make Rubin Debbie Wassermann-Schultz' (Democrat - FL) step father?

If so, then isn't it funny that you managed to NOT mention the connections Rubin has to the DEMOCRAT Party? Did you also DELETE all comments that referenced the DEMOCRATS?

Lot of tough circumstances in his life. Could have happened to any of us if we were in his shoes. Sure he realizes his mistakes and will make positive contributions to society from here on out.

Here we go again. don't you love the remorse from these people. rubin all of a sudden is remoresful isn't that nice. you try ripping the Gov't off for over 100 grand, hire the most expensive criminal att. in the city(but Rubins broke right?)and to top it all off he's going to get what 10/16 months in prison. What a joke.

Seems like the lobbyists, developers should have also raised money for Rubin's defense as well as his wife's. Guess some money just can't buy you're way out! I don't know why she can't be held for tax evasion too since they filed jointly. Both of them were bilking the public for a long time and I'm happy to see one or the other may be going to jail. Now if only justice could be served on the others sitting on the dias who have raped the public instead of letting them sing their way out jail and still continue to hold a public office. I don't consider that justice at all.

All this poormouthing about Wilma damage ... while traveling long and large with the Canadas. Now, how's he gonna pay back taxes, plus penalties and fines, AND his lawyer when the jig is up on his underhanded ways? Where the fresh income going to come from, huh?

Richard Rubin holds Florida architect and realtor licenses. He may loose them if convicted and sentenced. He is NOT an attorney. He is a looser as he defrauded the IRS and likely LIED to the feds. He traveled like a jet-setter WITH the Canadas after Wilma, and probably got a nice fat claim paid on"'damage" to his house. I don't care if clowns like him rob banks or whatever illegal activity that do but he had unjust enrichment from the cozy Parks Bond money and SW Ranches and that's robbing taxpayers.

Have been waiting since 2004 and the Sunny Lake "Davie Folly" for this to finally happen. As Karnack says: "The train goes clickety clack" -finally making it's stop in Davie. "All aboard" for the ride to the "clinkety-clink". There's lots of passengers to put on board for this ride. Rubin is not the only one who has gained from Davie. Next stop Palma Nova Land Swindle, Ronnie's Rodeo..or is it the Seminole Tribe of FL Rodeo these days?..., the "backroom, done deal" for the new town administrator, Lemack"..The history of decades of political favors bought and paid for by monied interests, just follow the money...The train is going from "East to West" on it's route through this town...Clickety, clack down the Town of Davie's track.

Pulp & Pulpsters:

"the bulk of it coming from a land deal he brokered for the Town of Davie in 2004."Important Clarification: Rubin in NO WAY "Brokered" this deal. The fact is once the residents found out a "borrow pit fill application" was filed w/Davie Planning & Zoning Dept. by Bill Laystrom on behalf of the property owner (property was zoned commercial) of the 17 acre/14+ which was water, and residents received, notices of the impending public hearing the residential property owners around this property contacted me to review the application and help them avoid having this former borrow pit, now known as Sunny Lake from being filled and used for commercial use.

Public meetings were held for the residents and it was decided to get funds for the $3.4 million selling price by applying for loans. Laystrom was at all these meetings. There was no "negotiating of the selling price" with the seller. The residents had each council member, separately visit the site when the "birds flew in to roost" at sunset.

There was NO NEED for a real estate broker or grant writer since the residents were working with the seller's legal representative and the town. Rubin was "mysteriously" brought in long by Council member Starkey, long after the process was underway, All of a sudden, an item appeared on the Town Council Agenda as a contract to hire Rubin for the grant writing which was already underway by Town staff. So, clearly, Rubin received a real estate commission and a grant writing fee for very little or no work.

The way $750,000. of Davie Dist.1 Open Space Bond Funds was paid for .7 acre (less than an acre) to add to this "Boondoggle", to a Davie property owner, Pam Pelkey Rose, who vigorously lobbied the Open Space Committee members, Parks & Rec Board Committee members and council was a disgrace. Not long before, she stated she would sell to commercial developer IDI to put 1.6 million sq. ft. of warehouses in that area. Nice, very nice.

This was a "put up, set up" deal. No doubt, if the FEDS dig deeper they will find more.Much more. The same resident who profited off the Town Open Space Bond Funds is now trying to get the Town officials to stop the removal of the invasive species which is part of the county and state requirements of the bond money paid for this "folly".

The sheer, utter arrogance and profiteering is absolutely beyond reproach.

As Karnack says: "The train goes klickety-klack" - it has arrived in Davie. All aboard - the train is making it's stops through Davie as it heads to the clinkety-clink.
