Obama Keeps Slight Edge in Florida

​Despite resistance to federal health care reform and the governor's refusal of a federally funded high-speed rail project, President Barack Obama maintains slightly favorable approval ratings among Floridian voters. And the most formidable of his potential Republican opponents is a former governor who once drove to Canada with the family dog strapped to the roof of his car.

A new Public Policy Polling survey found that the president's approval/disapproval numbers have improved from 45/49 in December to 48/47 in the survey released yesterday. Among Florida's Democratic voters, Obama jumped from 69 percent approval in December to 81 percent approval in the new poll.

Among potential Republican opponents for the 2012 election, Mitt Romney is the favorite, trailing Obama 46-44. Romney piloted a similar health care overhaul as governor of Massachusetts, so the election may come down to the whole dog thing.

Most other GOP hopefuls who came close don't seem interested in running. Former Gov. Jeb Bush trails the president 48-45. Somehow Rudy Giuliani came in down only 48-42. (Anyone who actually thinks Giuliani is a hero suffers from a Grand Illusion and doesn't know the Five Big Lies About 9/11.) Obama leads Mike Huckabee 50-43, up one point from December. And luckily, voters aren't taking Sarah Palin very seriously, as she trails by 13 points.
